Animal Profile

Falsetto

Hello, my name is Falsetto. My animal id is #237501. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/23/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Falsetto is at risk due to behavioral reasons. He was recently returned to the care center due to behavior concerns. His previous owner noted that Falsetto was mouthy, may snap when restrained, and often stares at other dogs. They also stated that Falsetto would guard random items and would escalate to snapping, growling, and attempting to bite. While in care Falsetto is friendly, enjoys pets, and checks in often with his handlers. Medically, Falsetto is apparently.

My Borough Break Buddy Wrote: On our Borough Break, we spent the whole day exploring! We started by walking over the bridge to Randall's island. While Falsetto initially pulled on the leash, after a few firm "hey!s" when he reached the end of his leash and a treat to redirect him back to me, he got much better at keeping the leash loose! After exploring the island, we walked across the East Side to Central Park. On our way, Falsetto passed plenty of dogs without pulling. Once in the park, he started pulling a bit more toward other dogs but was easily redirected with either a treat or a "come on, boy!" He never pulled toward squirrels/birds. When we took breaks, Falsetto was all about cuddles, head scratches, and belly rubs. But once he got his fill, he was happy to sit between my legs and watch the people pass. My boroughbreaker writes: Went to Central Park and Harlem Meer where we had a picnic on the grass. Falsetto loved playing with a stuffy toy and enjoying a peanut butter chew. We then walked around the conservatory garden where he stopped to smell the flowers and garnered attention from park goers. Falsetto showed little-to-no reaction towards other dogs. When there were smaller dogs, he tensed up but I redirected him by saying "come here, boy!" Falsetto also enjoyed hoisting himself up the bedrocks and grabbing small branches. He rubbed himself against us and was super affectionate. For lunch, we dined at the Barking Dog restaurant where we sat outside. I was impressed on how unbothered he was with busy foot traffic and loud construction noise. He enjoyed a burger patty from the dog menu and sat patiently as we ate. He was very well-behaved and chilled the whole time. A Volunteer Wrote: Falsetto has never met a stranger he didn't love, and a stranger has never not loved Falsetto: Plan an extra ten minutes for what would usually be a brisk walk around the block for all the stops and attention and tail wagging and greetings! Volunteers adore him, praising his ease on a leash, his love of treats and snuggles.

Falsetto was located in a top medium sized kennel above Small Fry A#236149. The handler proceeded to pick up Falsetto and keep him near their chest while they placed him in the top kennel. During this placement, Falsetto stretched out his back legs. Small Fry then bit Falsetto's left back foot. This caused Falsetto to cry out and then redirect on to the left side of the handler's jaw. Somewhere in the heat of things the handlers right pinky also became injured. Both wounds beld. The handler has one puncture wound on the left side of their face and a smaller wound on their right pinky. Falsetto has a puncture wound on his back left paw on the 4th digit that did bleed. ***Previous assessment available upon request***

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Falsetto so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

No Cats: Due to lunging towards cats we recommend a home with no cats. Place with a New Hope partner: Falsetto should go to a New Hope Partner due to his behavior concerns.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling; Falsetto was reported to be partially housebroken. Positive reinforcement should be used to manage this behavior. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Resource guarding: Falsetto was reported to guard random things by snapping, growling and attempting to bite. Nothing should be taken out of his mouth and Falsetto should learn the trade game using positive reinforcement. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Destructive behavior: Falsetto is noted to be destructive in the home. He will need daily enrichment to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout out on Destructive Behavior. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/leash biting: Falsetto's previous adopted stated he becomes mouthy at times. He takes treats with moderate pressure and grabs his leash during walks. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Falsetto impulse control. Please see the handouts on Arousal, Mouthiness and Leash Manners. Handling/touch sensitivity: According to Falsetto's previous adopter, Falsetto will bark, growl and snap when restrained, and have his collar grabbed. Positive reinforcement should be used to help him associate certain restrained with things he likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Falsetto was reported to stare at dogs while on leash. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Falsetto check in with his adopter when he sees his triggers. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
