Sheba

Hello, my name is Sheba. My animal id is #195706. I am a desexed female black dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/12/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - not good with resident animals.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Sheba needs emergency placement due to behavior concerns. Sheba was brought back to the Care Centers recently following a scuffle with another dog, fortunately without any injuries. However, in the Care Centers, she exhibits high levels of anxiety and fearful behaviors. She reacted by jumping on the pen fence and hard barking at a staff member who approached. Despite this, she does respond to treats and understands the cue sit. Medically, Sheba is healthy.

Pre-Screener Form Sheba needs emergency placement due to behavior concerns. Sheba was brought back to the Care Centers recently following a scuffle with another dog, fortunately without any injuries. However, in the Care Centers, she exhibits high levels of anxiety and fearful behaviors. She reacted by jumping on the pen fence and hard barking at a staff member who approached. Despite this, she does respond to treats and understands the cue to sit. Medically, Sheba is healthy. Shadow was surrendered to BACC as a stray. She was initially intensely fearful at the care center, shaking and cowering away from staff, allowing minimal handling. Over time, She allowed staff to handle her but didn't seek interaction. She takes treats with light pressure and knows the cue sit. She was returned to the care center after having an altercation with another resident dog. The altercation did not result in broken skin. As a result, we recommend she be placed with an experienced, adult-only foster or adopter home through one of our New Hope partners where she can take the time and space she needs to decompress.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Upon intake, Sheba sniffed me as I held the front door open. Once inside the lobby, she looked around in every direction, turning her body in each direction. After a few moments, she laid down tucked away in the corner of the lobby next to owner facing the front doors. Her head was held upright, not resting on the ground. She looked at me with soft eyes. She accepted treats when tossed on the ground and also took treats gently from a staff's hand. When it was time for us to leash Shadow, she retracted her head slightly with hesitation. Her owner was able to get the leash over her head with ease. She was walked to her kennel with ease, but I noticed stiffness and downward position in her tail. She entered her kennel with ease.

Basic Information:: Sheba is an approximately 2-year-old unaltered female LMB dog who was surrendered by her owner due to aggression between Sheba and another resident dog, which escalated to a bite incident. no skin was broken.

Previously lived with:: 1 adult and 2 large dogs

How is this dog around strangers?: Around strangers, Sheba is shy but friendly. She may hide at first, and she would prefer that contact be on her own terms.

How is this dog around children?: Sheba does not have experience with children in the home. Around children who are strangers, Shadow is shy but friendly. She may hide at first, and she would prefer that contact be on her own terms.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Sheba has very limited experience around unfamiliar dogs (leashed/unleashed) due to the fact that she did not go on walks with her owner. She was trained to eliminate in her backyard. With the few unfamiliar dogs she has interacted with on a walk or has observed from behind her backyard fence, Sheba has been friendly and outgoing.

How is this dog around cats?: Shadow has no experience with cats.

Resource guarding:: Shadow has never been known to resource guard. However, she lived with a resident dog (Star - see admissions note 04/10/24) who may have had a history of resource guarding territories from the other dog . In situations where Star guarded certain doorways or locations in the home, Sheba would retreat from that area and come back when Star was gone/not guarding the area.

Bite history:: Yes. When defending herself from an attack by Star, Sheba bit Star but did not break skin (see behavior note 04/10/24). This was the first time Sheba had ever bitten anyone or any other dog. owner didn't do a proper re-introduction when sheba & star were reclaimed so star bit sheba first and then sheba bit back but no one was injured.

Date of assessment:: 3/19/2024

Summary:: Sheba has been intensely fearful in the care center, shaking and cowering away from contact. Out of concern for her levels of stress, she is not eligible for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: Due to Sheba entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 03/17/24 Sheba is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Sheba attempts to greet the novel male dog but is too nervous. Sheba walks away, keeping to her distance from the novel male dog. 4/17/24: Sheba approaches the other dog at the gate with soft body and wagging tail. However, when the greeter dog moves away, Sheba jumps on the gate with a tense body and growls.

Summary (7):: 4/19/24: Sheba was at the front of her kennel panting and barking. She was easily secured with a slip lead and walked out of the kennel to the yard. Outside, Sheba paces and pants while walking around. She would fixate on the pigeons but didn't try to jump for them. When the handler offered her treats she took them with mild pressure. Sheba listens to the cues sit. She became increasingly anxious when other dogs were near the pens but was refocused with a treat. Another handler walked to the fence to speak to the handler walking Sheba, and Sheba jumped on the fence and hard bark. She was quickly moved away with treats. When her session was over, she walked back to her kennel without issue. Previous stay at ACC: 3/17/24: Sheba shied away from leash at first, but eventually tolerated it. When Sheba saw another staff member standing nearby, she stood still inside kennel looking in their direction. The staff member moved out of sight and Sheba was led outside. Shadow was kept on a slip leash for duration of interaction (see dog-dog summary) due to FAS and skittish behavior. When exiting yard, Sheba started jumping up at handler. Handler told her "no" and held her away from body. When handler was clipping figure 8 in hallway, Sheba saw another staff member and stood very still looking in their direction. Sheba was resistant re-entering room and startled when a kennel blocker started to fall on her, so handler quickly guided her into kennel to end interaction. Unfortunately this was the wrong kennel, so a second handler relocated her and reported no issues. 3/16/24: Sheba is brought into the canine behavior office to conduct a handling assessment. She is cowering and trembling. Sheba shies away from contact and does not respond to treats or toys. She is returned to kennel without issue.

Date of intake:: 3/15/2024

Summary:: fearful but allowed all handling

Date of initial:: 3/15/2024

Summary:: timid, a little tense throughout exam

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have limited history on Sheba and are unsure how she would behave in a home. However, she will need daily mental and physical enrichment in order to remain engaged and exercised.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN: Due to Sheba's intense fearfulness, we recommend she be placed in a home with no children under 13 or a family prepared to make sure Sheba is comfortable with force-free, reward-based methods. NEW HOPE ONLY: Due to Sheba's intense fearfulness, we recommend she be placed in an experienced foster or adopter home through one of our New Hope partners.

Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Fearful,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: FEARFUL: Sheba has been intensely fearful in the care center, shaking and cowering, allowing minimal handling. It is important to go slow with her and allow her to set the pace and tone of interactions. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite History (Dog): Previous owner reports when defending herself from an attack by resident dog Sheba bit them but did not break skin. This was the first time Sheba had ever bitten anyone or any other dog. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: At the care center Sheba has been observed to react to people on leash, lunging towards them and barking. Sheba will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other people. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
