Meadow
Hello, my name is Meadow. My animal id is #242682. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 11/29/2025.
Meadow is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up significantly despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Meet Meadow! Meadow was picked up from a Brooklyn stoop after concerned neighbors reported he was vomiting and not himself. Even while feeling awful, he still allowed gentle pets and handling. Now that he's been treated and is feeling more stable, Meadow spends much of his time tucked into his den, watching the world with wide, thoughtful eyes. He's a shy, sensitive senior who's been through a scare and is quietly waiting for a calm, safe place to land. My Ideal Home Meadow will do best in a quiet, predictable home with experienced cat adopters who understand that some cats need extra time to feel secure. He's more of a "watch from the doorway" cat than a social butterfly. A patient person who can offer cozy hiding spots, soft bedding, and a gentle routine will help him relax. Let him set the pace and celebrate the small wins-a slow blink, a tiny head bump, or a brave step out of his den. Good with Kids? No young children. Meadow is timid and easily overwhelmed. A home with adults only, or calm, respectful teens who can give him space and move slowly around him, is the best fit. Good with Other Pets? It's unknown if Meadow has lived with other animals. Given his fearful, reserved nature, he may do best as the only pet. If joining a home with other animals, he'll need very slow, structured introductions and plenty of vertical space and hiding spots so he never feels cornered or pressured. Other Fun Facts • Even when sick on the stoop, he allowed gentle petting and handling • Quiet, observant, and happiest when he has a safe den to retreat to • Leans in to sniff tools and tolerates soft head pets once he feels secure

It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Meadow was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/09/25 FB61 In cat den upon initial approach, body and face tense. He pokes his head out a bit when spoken to and he hisses with flattened ears as I begin to give him compliments and continue to speak to him. He softens when offered a catnip toy and shifts his ears forward while sniffing the air. I place the toy in the front of his kennel and he steps out half-way, his hisses turning into vocalizations. He is not ready for petting today, however he comes to the front of his kennel and begins rolling all around! He accepts some pets on his head through the door as he's engaging with his toy. What an adorable and playful guy. Has potential. 12/10/25 FB06 Meadow is in his den out of view. As i give a few psst pssts, he pokes his head out quickly. His ears are forward, eyes are wide and gives a meow. I offer him the scratcher and he swats it from inside the den, grabbing it and sniffing it. I leave him with an enrichment toy and he comes out and starts to play with it. 12/15/25 FB79 Meadow was in his den. When I lifted the den cover, he hissed once and began to vocalize. I put Squeeze Up and Temptations just outside the den opening. He put his head out to see it but did not eat. His has a runny nose, so he may not be feeling well. I did not try to pet him in order to keep him comfortable. I ended the interaction and he stayed in the den, with only his head protruding. 12/18/25 FB58 In his den and under the weather - he pokes his head out and sounds congested but sees me place some dry treats down and walks towards the front, immediately beginning to eat. As he finishes the dry treats, I place down a tray of squeeze up and he eats it enthusiastically. He is wary of pets but I click to mark each time he allows pets along his head and back as he eats. 12/15/25 FB79 Meadow has no interest in any treats or toys that i offered as he was kept a neutral face and body inside of his den. He seems a little under the weather but remained still and unbothered by my presence. 12/20/25 FB06 Meadow is pacing around his kennel with a neutral face and eyes and his body loose. As i opened the door, he moved to the other side of the kennel. tapping the portal, getting his attention, he comes back over to the other side and nudges my hand for pets. As I am petting his head, he lays down and starts rolling around. After a brief moment he swatted and hissed at my hand. I ended the interaction, leaving him with a chicken cupcake that he enjoyed. 12/22/25 FB79 Meadow was the front of the kennel, with his tail wrapped and his ears forward; i coaxed him up and through the portal to the other side and offered him a tray of treats. he had a high tail and allowed me to pet the top of his head and cheeks but pulled back when he fished his treats. 12/24/25 FB06 Sleeping inside his den head leaning against opening I gently blow into the cage to wake him. He turns to face me and meows and starts eating. He allows some head pets with the scratcher. GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer due to being fearful.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 due to fearfulness. Older respectful children only. Counselor discretion.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach, Meadow was in his den, face in view. His eyes were wide and ears were forward. As the kennel door is opened he has no reaction as he watches the assessor. Offering the scratcher, he gently leans to sniff it. Moving the scratcher closer to pet Meadow, he backs his head away. The assessor is able to give him a few head pets with the scratcher as his head is backed up against the back of the den. He tolerates the few pets and the interaction is ended. No pick up was attempted at this time. 12/31/25 Meadow displayed similar behaviors during his reassessment. Meadow tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
