Animal Profile

Figgy

Hello, my name is Figgy. My animal id is #217189. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/21/2024.

Figgy is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Figgy has been observed to be leash biting during his stay in the care center. This behavior is not always able to be redirected using treats. Figgy has also been observed to fixate and bark at people and dogs while on leash. While out with handlers Figgy is social and will present with a loose wiggly body. Medically Figgy is underweight.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. I am really treat motivated. You can use treats to teach me new things! It could be with you! Summary:: 1/18/25: Figgy greets another dog at the gate with a tense body, wagging tail. He then vocalizes.

Summary (5):: 2/10/25: ACS report that Figgy will exit the kennel and begin leash biting, this behavior was able to be redirected using a toy. 2/9/2025 (Trainer Note): Figgy is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed and brought out to the yard for a walk. He pulls moderately to the pens and is put on a drag leash without issue. He remains loose and wiggly for the whole interaction, occasionally jumping up on handler in a social manner, or play bowing quickly as he bounced around the pen. He is easily redirected back to the floor with some treats as he is food motivated. He remains engaged and social with handler throughout walk. He does not react to other people and dogs passing by, instead he turns his attention back to handler for a reward. He stares at the small birds on the fence briefly but, again, is easily redirected back to handler with some treats. Handler begins hand target ("touch") training: Handler holds out hand near Figgy's snout, Figgy boops handlers hand with his nose, and a reward marker is used along with a reward. Handler attempted 5 times at the same distance, but then used the push, drop, stick method to further challenge him. Handler attempted the same behavior but holding out their hand farther in distance. At first Figgy pawed at handlers hand and bounced around, but eventually was rewarded when he successfully touched the hard target with his nose. Handler decided to "Drop" back down to a closer distance and end training session on a good note. Figgy heavily leans into handlers legs and wiggles constantly as handler pets him along his head and body. He is leashed and returned to kennel without issue. Figgy is given a snuffle mat for additional in kennel enrichment which he immediately engages with.

Summary (6):: 2/7/25: It was reported by staff that Figgy lunges at bikes when on walks. It was also reported that Figgy focused on the poop bag the handler was holding, with poop in it. He slapped it out of their hand before it could be tied, picked it up and flung it around. 2/2/25- Figgy is at the front of his kennel with a wiggly body, when handler attempts to leash he tries to bite the leash once. Handler was able to leash on the second attempt. He is taken for a street walk, he bites the leash when in the driveway. Handler doesn't engage nor pull the leash back, they present a treat and Figgy stops biting the leash. He does this periodically throughout the walk and is redirected with treats. He stops to sniff around and is social with handler. When handler pets his neck, Figgy leans into the handler's legs and has a wiggly body. He allows them to pet his side, going back and forth leaning into their legs. Another dog comes from around a corner and Figgy starts to pull and bark/ growl at the other dog. Handler pulls him away to cross the street and tosses treats in the direction away from the other dog. He follows the treats then will look back at the dog trying to find the dog. Handler has Figgy sit and gives him treats before continuing to walk. He walks a whole block without leash biting and when returning to the building, Figgy sees a dog. He again fixates on them and barks at them. Handler keeps him close and when MOPs are passing, he pulls towards them barking at them. Handler kept their distance and rounded the corner. Again handler had Figgy sit and gave him a couple of treats. Once closer the building, Figgy starts to leash bite and won't take treats. Handler gets into the driveway and tosses a treat which he goes to eat. He doesn't engage in anymore leash biting. He is easily clipped and returned to his kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 2/1/25: It was reported by a staff member that Figgy is leash biting and mouthing handlers. Treats are not consistently deterring this behavior. 1/29/25: It was reported on the behavior board that Figgy is leash biting. 1/18/25: It was reported on the behavior board that Figgy fixates on dogs on walks. 12/23/24- Figgy is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. When waiting in the hallway for a cart to pass, Figgy sniffed at a dog in a pop up crate. handler tugged away. While walking on the street he had a moderate pull and would sniff around. When a MOP was walking up behind Figgy and handler, Figgy turned back and gave a grumble/ growl to them. Handler pulled him away and gave distance to people passing during the rest of the duration of the walk. He tooks treats with slight pressure and was mostly aloof with handler. He was taken for an assessment where he initial backed away from second handler when collaring, other handler held treats and he was easily collared. He was aloof with handlers, only interacting when treats were presented. When handler came back in the room after they knocked, Figgy gave a low grumble/ growl again. Handler tossed treats and he had a loose body again. He played with a toy and handlers tossed treats. Handler uses treats as lure to releashed and he is returned to his kennel without issue.

Date of initial:: 12/21/2024

Summary:: Solicits head petting

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Figgy so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to mouthie behavior and leash biting we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Figgy has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social seeming manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Figgy has been observed to mouth handlers. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Figgy puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Figgy has been observed to vocalizes when people approach and when people pass on the street. It is important to move slowly with Figgy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Figgy has been observed to pull hard towards people and dogs while barking and growling. Figgy will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Figgy has been observed to jump up and bite the leash. This behavior is not easily redirectable using treats. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
