Animal Profile

Theodore

Hello, my name is Theodore. My animal id is #259391. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/10/2026.

Theodore needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He is a friendly, senior cat with mild chronic kidney disease and a heart murmur. He needs a special diet indefinitely and blood pressure monitoring by a local veterinarian.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Theodore needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He is a friendly, senior cat with mild chronic kidney disease and a heart murmur. He needs a special diet indefinitely and blood pressure monitoring by a local veterinarian. A volunteer writes: Senior Theodore was brought to us as his owner became unable to take care of his pets for quite a while and and was taken into care. A nice person was feeding all these cats, even placed them but Theodore kept in hiding, not willing to leave his home. No wonder he was in shock when he arrived at the care center. His lovely nature, though has surfaced and sweet Theodore leans now into pets, purrs and makes lots of biscuits(see his video). He is a very endearing, loving and lovable gentlecat! Theodore does have a host of medical issues. Among them are his very senior teeth(he eats well, though), a heart murmur with a stressed myocardium(proBNP of 1030) and chronic kidney disease for which he is on a special diet. My heart goes to Theodore who has still a lot of love and gentle companionship to give to the new owner who will give him the chance to feel safe, well cared for and loved. If you are that wonderful person, Theodore(and us) would be blessed to have you meet him at the Manhattan Care Center! What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! Theodore is laying in his den, eyes wide, pupils dilated, and slightly tense as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and he is spoken to softly, he pokes his head out of the portal exit, slow blinking. He is tolerant of all petting, a bit tense when pet down his shoulders and back but leaning in and closing his eyes when he is pet on the head and cheeks. Theodore is able to be maneuvered out of his den and is tolerant of pickup, tensing but not displaying further issue when held. When he is placed back down, he walks back into his den, curling up and turning to face the back wall, tolerating some more petting on the head before the interaction is ended. Theodore tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred and be well counseled in fearful cat behavior.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/13/26 FB73 Theodore is laying in his litter box, head held low, eyes wide, pupils dilated, and body tense as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and he is spoken to softly, Theodore begins to hiss. Crunchy treats are placed at the front of the kennel, and he slowly comes forward to eat them, tail and body low. He is tolerant of petting on the head while he eats his treats, freezing, looking up at the assessor with a tense body, and backing away when he is finished eating. He will continue to approach the front of the kennel for treats but remains tense throughout the interaction. The assessor attempts further petting with the scratcher tool and he once again begins to hiss a bit more intensely, ears back and lip licking. Treats are left in the kennel, and the interaction is ended to reduce FAS. Later in the day when the room is a bit quieter, the assessor approaches Theodore for a second interaction. This time he is initially a little bit tense, still laying curled in on himself in his litter box, but after some soft talk and crunchy treats, he begins to return slow blinks. Theodore allows petting on the head and cheeks, leaning in and closing his eyes as he is pet before beginning to make air biscuits. 7/14/26 Vol. Sitting in his privacy den with just his head sticking out. He’s on a special diet so didn’t give him any tuna or Squeeze-ups. Wasn’t interested in playing with the cat dancer or the laser. Was able to pet him by hand for several minutes. Sweet senior kitty but still shy. 7/15/26 Vol. Theodore was resting on his side in litter box. His pupils were somewhat dilated, and he lip licked when approached. When extending a hand toward him, Theodore leaned forward to head bunt and push his head into forehead rubs. He remained on his side in litter box, purring softly and kneading his paws against kennel wall. He lip licked again occasionally during interaction, but otherwise appeared generally relaxed, with a loose body.
