Thor Blues
Hello, my name is Thor Blues. My animal id is #227353. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 3 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 5/17/2025.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Thor Blues needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He has a corneal ulcer and needs further diagnostics and eye medication we do not have to recover. Behaviorally, he enjoys greeting familiar handlers. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me.

Summary:: Pacing, hard barking, hard pulling,and lunging towards dogs
Date of initial:: 5/18/2025
Summary:: Tense body for exam. Resists restraint. Growls for tasks
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Thor Blues so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Handling Sensitivity: While a handler was trying to assess his right eye, the handler attempted to place a muzzle on. Thor Blue growled and escalated to biting the handler on the left hand. This bite did not result in broken skin. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Thor Blues to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: During his exam Thor was observed to be tense and growled during tasks. It is important to move slowly with Thor, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Thor was observed to pace during intake. If Thor displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: During intake Thor was observed to hard bark and lunge towards dogs. During his stay in the care center Thor has been observed to pull hard towards other dogs in the kennel room. Thor will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
