Decatur
Hello, my name is Decatur. My animal id is #260568. I am a male wheaten dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/23/2026.
Decatur is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Decatur has shown deterioration and is noted to bite at his kennel wall. Decatur is noted to become tense and freezes, and fixate when seeing another dog, he will sometimes look away or is noted to be difficult to redirect his focus. Difficult to redirect. Decatur is noted in a calmer setting to allow petting from handlers, taking treats, and engaging with enrichment, but is still struggling to acclimate. Medically, Decatur is apparently healthy.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 8/20/26: Decatur is introduced to novel intact male and does not approach the fence, remaining neutral with a low tail. He has an open panting mouth and gives low wags towards handlers but avoids eye contact with the other dog. 8/18/26: Decatur is introduced to a novel spayed female and is neutral at the fence, perked and watching the other dog along the fence line. When the other dog approaches, Decatur sniffs nose to nose through the fence briefly and then disengages and interacts with his handler. He is then introduced to a novel intact female and is neutral at the gate and generally aloof, walking by often but not staying nearby. When being led away, he begins to pull towards the other dog with a head tilt, and forward leaning body. The other dog is let into the yard and the two engage in mutual sniffing while Decatur remains neutral and gives a few mid level wags. He does a play stomp when the other dog play bows but when they begin trying to leap onto him and initiate more rough and rowdy play, he is tolerant but displacement toe taps and avoids eye contact, backing away. When separated, he watches the other dog but does not reapproach. He is then introduced to a novel intact male and is neutral with a low tail at the fence, generally aloof at the gate. The other dog is let into the yard, and Decatur tolerates sniffing initially but walks away and after a few times he then head whips with a closed mouth. He disengages and walks away without issue. 8/15/26: Decatur is introduced to a novel intact female and approaches the fence with a neutral body while briefly sniffing nose to nose through the fence. He is let into the yard and approaches the other dog with a neutral body, occasionally flinching back but reapproaching with mid level wags. He then begins toe tapping/play stomping and doing small spins. He and the other dog walk around the play yard off leash, occasionally stopping to sniff nose to nose/from behind and then resuming exploring the yard. He is tolerant of light bumping and continues to remain relaxed walking side by side. 7/30/26: Decatur is introduced to a novel intact female and explores the catch pen before approaching with a neutral body and low-mid level tail. He sniffs the other dog through the fence briefly and then disengages and focuses on his handler. When let into the yard, he approaches the dog with a neutral body but the other dog begins to throw herself underneath him and bump him. He is tolerant but turns his face away and immediately retreats. He walks back towards her once but stops a few feet from her and turns away, not reapproaching.
Summary (7):: 8/20/26: Decatur is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, spinning around as the handler approaches; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Decatur tolerates pets. He is brought to the yard for playgroup (see D2D notes); afterwards the handler brings Decatur inside and returns him to his kennel. 8/18/26: Prior to the walk, Decatur has chewed up the side of his kennel wall, leaving small pieces of it on the floor. Decatur is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, spinning around in a circle; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Decatur tolerates pets while riding the elevator down; he is brought to the yard for playgroup (see D2D notes). In between interactions, Decatur roams around, typically looking around a lot; he also takes treats from the other handler. Afterwards, the handler brings Decatur back inside and returns him to his kennel. 8/15/26 (D2D): Decatur was at front of kennel where he was easily leashed and pulled for playgroup (Please see dog to dog notes for details). Walking thru the hallway he had a neutral body and walked next to handler with a slack leash. In the play yard he was social with the other handlers present. After his interaction he was returned to kennel with no issue -TE 8/13/26: On the whiteboard, Decatur is noted to potentially be house trained 8/8/26: Decatur is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, spinning around in a circle as the handler approaches; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Decatur walks with mild to moderate leash tension; he notices and looks at dogs, but looks away on his own. Decatur tolerates pets from the handler. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Decatur to his kennel with ease. 7/30/26: Decatur is at the front of his kennel with a soft body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. The handler brings Decatur to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog notes). After the interaction, the handler returns Decatur to his kennel. 7/26/26 (Assessment): Decatur is standing at front of kennel with a tense body. He is easily leashed and taken for a brief street walk before his assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). He displayed no reactivity to dogs or people on his walk. He maintained a tense body and low hanging tail during his walk. He did not accept any treats and only accepted pets on his head. During his assessment he still maintained a tense body. Summary:: Fearful but allowed handling
Date of initial:: 7/24/2026
Summary:: Tense with tail tucked, but allows all handling for exam, growls during some tasks
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Decatur so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: During his medical exam, Decatur growled during some tasks. During his assessment, Decatur was tense, trembling and showing whale eye when the handler attempted to interact. It is important to move slowly with Decatur, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Decatur has been observed to become tense, freeze, and fixate when seeing another dog while on leash. This behavior is not easy to redirect. Decatur will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
