Animal Profile

Bane

Hello, my name is Bane. My animal id is #19345. I am a male brown dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/28/2018.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Bane is at risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. behaviorally, we suggest that Bane would be best suited to a dog experienced home.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Bane is a middle aged gentleman who knows what he wants. He is a sizable and handsome dog who might be looking stern and determined but wags his tail nevertheless as I stand in front of his kennel. A treat is in order and he sits upon command before I leash him for his walk. Doing his business is a priority as he seems very much house trained. His den is spotless and orderly. Bane,I bet would love to go to the park but he has a little cold and we will have to do laps in the yard. A harness tames his enthusiasm pretty nicely and by the end of our time together, Bane and I sat quietly on a bench for bonding time....and more treats, of course. He can sit, stay and come as requested although he will express at times his disagreement when I am too pushy or out of dry liver.... I love his frowny face made even more serious by his cropped ears...You might look tough, Bane but deep inside, you are just a little boy....Bane is a big and strong guy who would love to belong, love and be loved again. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center.

My medical notes are...

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 1. Green

Date of intake:: 1/28/2018

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Date of assessment:: 1/29/2018

Look:: 1. Dog's eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands.

Sensitivity:: 3. Dog is not fearful and is struggling to get away. The dog is not focused and is in constant movement, unconnected to the Assessor.

Tag:: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends (may need coaxing to approach). Dog is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.

Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.

Paw squeeze 2:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.

Flank squeeze 1:: Item not conducted

Flank squeeze 2:: Item not conducted

Toy:: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.

Summary:: Bane appeared anxious in the assessment room, focusing on the exit and panting. He did not come to the assessor when coaxed, but he allowed the assessor to approach him. He was aloof during the assessment, focusing on sniffing things and on the exit, but he allowed all handling.

Summary (1):: 1/29: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Bane is polite when greeting. He tolerates play behavior, however does not engage it.

Date of initial:: 1/28/2018

Summary:: Bane was social and allowed handling.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bane so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium-high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: During interactions with Bane, he has been social with handlers, allowing all handling and soliciting attention. He has also jumped up persistently and mounted the person handling him, and he is at times difficult to dissuade from mounting.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Bane jumps up on people in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Social hyperarousal: At the care center, Bane has been quick to mount certain handlers and is, at times, difficult to dissuade from doing this. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Bane to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to mounting, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Bane. Anxiety: Bane appears anxious at the care center, panting and focusing on the exit during his assessment. We have no history on him in a home, so we do not know if this behavior will be present outside of the care center. If it does occur, we recommend giving him puzzle toys, long walks, and things to do to relieve his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, reward based training only should be used.
