Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormUmbrella is at risk due to behavior concerns. In the Care Centers, Umbrella has shown elevated levels of fearful behavior. He has been observed growling, baring his teeth, and thrashing when approached or walked by staff. During walks, he maintains a tense posture, though he appears to enjoy watching pigeons. While he has accepted treats on occasion, he does not take them reliably. Medically, Umbrella is being monitored for very early signs of CIRDC.

Summary:: Umbrella has been observed to be fearful during their stay in the care center. Noted to have a tense body and growl when approached by handlers. Due to the high levels of fear, stress and anxiety obscured Umbrella is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (4):: 4/13/25: Umbrella is siting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and was slowly taken to the yard. In the yard, he would walk ahead of the handler and stop in front to sniff the ground. He was hesitant to walk back inside and would walk slowly behind the handler and stop continuously. Once reaching the stairs, he was able to be clipped and taken back to his kennel with no issue. 04/12/25: Umbrella is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats but doesn't accept any, he is leashed without issue and taken to the yard for his walk. He exits kennel and walks with handler sniffing frequently once out in the hall. Umbrella exits to the yard and walks with handler around the perimeter of the yard. He sniffs around and passes dogs in the yard without issue. Umbrella watches the pigeons inside the front play yard but is hesitant to enter the yard, after a moment he walks in and watches the pigeons fly away. He stands close to the entrance and doesn't stay in the yard for long. He continues to walk around the perimeter with handler for a bit more until he is brought back to kennel. His leash is clipped when entering back inside and he returns without issue.
Summary (5):: 04/09/25: Umbrella is at the center of his kennel laying down as handler approaches. He is offered treats by handler and approaches to sniff them but does not accept them. Handler initially attempts to lasso Umbrella but he moves back slightly and begins low growling at handler. He is given a moment before handler continues attempting to leash him, he continues to low growl but does not escalate and is eventually leashed successfully. He exits kennel and walks with handler out to toward the street, however once he reaches the laundry room he begins baulking and stares forward with wide eyes. Handler notices another dog entering into the laundry room so handler walks backward and uses another route to reach the driveway. Once outside he begins baulking again, at first simply stopping and sniffing around frequently but escalating to pulling backward and shaking his head slightly. Handler stands in place and keeps them from further stepping back or beginning to thrash by remaining in place. After being given a moment handler continues walking forward with Umbrella. Umbrella walks forward and stops again, sniffing around for a long period of time, handler waits until he is finished and continues walking forward with Umbrella. Handler notes that during the walk Umbrella is shaking around the hind quarter and legs. He is walked around the driveway and ignores dogs he sees while walking. After exploring the driveway for a bit Umbrella is brought back to kennel and returns without issue.
Summary (6):: 4/8/25- Umbrella is laying down at the back of his kennel with a tense body when handlers approach. He slowly gets up and comes to the front, one handler presents a treat and he gently takes it. Other handler goes to leash, Umbrella's hackles go up from his neck to his rear with his head low. he started to low growl and retreat to the back of the kennel. He was wide eyed at the back, other handler attempted to leash and Umbrella was low growling with a tight lip. Handler got a hook to attempt to put the leash on. Umbrella would retreat a little further and growling became louder while moving back and forth to avoid the hook with the leash on it. Handler closed the door and locked it. Umbrella came to the front with a slightly softer body, taking treats from the handler again. Handler decided to try again to leash without the hook, one handler fed treats while the other handler slowly draped the leash over Umbrella's head. He was successfully leashed, handler open's the door. Umbrella slowly come to the front with hackles up again but with no vocalization, looking at the kennels next to his. He slowly exited the kennel and room. He would sniff the rolling carts when being taken to the play yard. Handlers took him to the second pen, he slowly entered and sniffed around. He relieved himself immediately and one handler went to clean his kennel. Umbrella sniffed around the pen and watched pigeons fly overhead with no reaction. he had slight tense body at times with his ears slightly pinned looking around. Handler offered treats, Umbrella just sniffed them but didn't take any. Umbrella past a dog in neighboring pen and had no reaction to them, he just looked at them while walking past with a softer body. He was easily clipped and slowly went back into kennel with no further issues.
Summary (7):: 4/7/25: Intake Behavior: Umbrella is laying down in the cop car as handler approaches. He has his head facing the back of the car, while his rear towards the front. His entire body is wedged between the wall of the car and the seat, officers were unable to move seat, but were able to move front seat upward. Handler #1 attempted to use the leash attached to him to pull him out, but he begins to crawl further into the tight space. As the attempts continue, he escalates to low growling and baring teeth. Second handler places thick jacket over side where Umbrella's face is positioned, and then uses a bite stick to slowly push the jacket towards Umbrella. The growling intensifies but he also begins to retreat. Once out from the nook, handler #2 has leash ready and double ropes him. As he is being brought in, he begins to thrash in the driveway. He briefly ceases and handlers continue to walk him into the care centers. When passing by the elevator he puts the brakes on and handlers have to drag him into the room. He begins to walk a bit, but right in front of his kennel he quickly escalated to alligator rolling and intensely thrashing. Handler revert to using a lot of muscle to secure him in kennel.
Date of intake:: 4/7/2025
Summary:: Growling, thrashing, alligator rolling
Date of initial:: 4/7/2025
Summary:: Reluctant to come out of the kennel; tail tucked under. Opted to sedate
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Umbrella so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Umbrella has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to escalate to thrashing and alligator rolling while on leash. Umbrella has also been observed to have a tense body, tucked tail and growl when approached by handlers. It is important to move slowly with Umbrella, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
