Officer Friendly
Hello, my name is Officer Friendly. My animal id is #231861. I am a desexed male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/12/2025.
Officer Friendly is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Officer Friendly is struggling to acclimate in his kennel despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Officer Friendly will lunge at his kennel door, and jump incessantly off of his door during the day. Officer Friendly is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate. Medically, Officer Friendly is apparently healthy.

Medically, Officer Friendly is apparently healthy. A volunteer writes: Officer Friendly was one of a few dogs transferred to Queens from the crowded Manhattan shelter. Found in Brooklyn, he's getting back to his outer borough roots with us, and we couldn't be happier to have him. With a name like Officer Friendly, I expected him to be....friendly, but my high expectations were beat! He's a LOVE. While we waited together for his glamour shots to be taken, he joined me to huddle in a shady spot and practically glued his furry body to me. I have no complaints when a pup attaches themselves barnacle style to me, but certainly not one so cute! His signature move is coming over to be pet and throwing his little butt into the air, eventually rolling over. He played and I suspect he might be the type of dog to play with toys in their paws while on their back. He's perfection either way! Officer Friendly was found stray and brought to the shelter with police. He was friendly during his intake, and seems to not be the biggest fan of other pups. No problem, because he's enough love for 10 homes!

Summary (7):: 7/29/25: Officer Friendly is at the front of his crate with a loose body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and pulls out of the crate. He immediately jumps up towards the empty cat kennels in the hall. He is quickly pulled away and walks to the street. On the street Officer Friendly pulls moderately towards areas on the street to smell and relieve himself. Handler notices his breathing crackles from the leash tension. Handler scatters treats and a leash harness is placed on him which helps with the breathing. He is aloof with the handler during the walk. Officer Friendly is then brought back to the shelter and is taken towards the backyard to place a harness on him. Handler scatters a few treats and is able to place a harness on Officer Friendly without issue. He walks around the backyard panting, sniffing his surroundings and relieving himself. When a dog passes the pen he approaches with a stiff high flagging tail. The dog leaves and Officer Friendly returns to walking around the pen. Handler sits on the bench and he approaches the handler with a soft body. He takes treats gently and rests his head on the handlers hands. Handler pets him and he leans into the pets. After sometime, Officer Friendly is re-leashed to his harness and returned to his crate without issue. 7/20/25: It was reported on the whiteboard that Officer Friendly is "cat reactive". 7/14/25-Officer friendly is laying down with a neutral body when handler approaches his pop up crate, he is stands up when door is being unlocked and is easily leashed. When Office friendly exits his pop up, he is near the neighboring pop up. He growls with a tense body and handler moves him away and takes him on a street walk. He walks on a loose leash with a moderate pull towards spots to sniff. Handler offers him treats but he shows no interest. They use a squeaker and he follows them. He relieves himself. When returning back to the building he sees another dog and he has a tense body, pulling towards them. Handler used their squeaker and Officer friendly keeps his attention on handler. He is taken for his assessment where he is easily collared and is social with handlers. He lays down in the office. He is easily releashed and returned to his pop up crate without issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Officer Friendly be placed in a home with no children under 13. No cats: Office Friendly is noted to be reactive towards cats we recommend that he be placed in a home with no cats.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Kennel presence/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Officer has been observed to become tense when a handler when placing a collar on him. It is noted that while in kennel, he will lunge and growl in front of his kennel. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Officer would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Officer has been observed to growl towards dog that are in the neighboring pop up crates. He has also been observed to become tense and pull towards dogs while on the street. Officer will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Office Friendly is noted to be reactive towards cats.
