Rocky
Hello, my name is Rocky. My animal id is #214571. I am a male black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 5 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/8/2026, with the surrender reason stated as other.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormRocky is at risk for behavior reasons. Rocky was surrendered to the care center due to his reactivity towards unfamiliar people, other animals and moving objects. Rocky was highly fearful on intake but has warmed up with select staff with a slow approach. Due to his kennel reactivity, he has potential to redirect on handlers. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Rocky is a large, energetic German Shepherd with a big heart and lots of love to give-but he's looking for an experienced owner who understands his needs. When first in care, Rocky was highly fearful and reactive in his kennel, often barking and lunging at staff. He may not have had much socialization early on, so he requires a patient, confident handler to help him continue building trust. Once Rocky feels comfortable, he truly shines. He is a social, affectionate, and playful dog who loves spending time with his family. Grooming is one of his favorite activities, and he enjoys car rides and being part of the action in the living room.

Summary:: Rocky was surrendered to the care center due to increase on leash reactivity to strangers and other animals. The owner reports he is under socialized. Rocky has been highly reactive towards staff thus far in care. He is not a candidate for a handling assessment.
Summary:: 5/12: Rocky stands at the gate with a neutral body and his tail begins to raise as a F LMB approaches. They greet briefly for a few seconds before Rocky alert barks and jumps up against the gate.
Summary (1):: Rocky is a social and affectionate male dog who is full of energy and loves to play. He spends most of his time in the living room, enjoying the company of his family. Grooming is one of his favorite activities—he loves bath time and water, and he happily allows his family to brush him and trim his nails. Rocky walks on a leash with mild to moderate pulling, typically going on three to four walks a day, each lasting about 20 minutes. He is crate trained and does well in his Korg XL crate. Car rides are another favorite of his, and he eagerly hops in whenever he has the chance. Rocky is a smart dog who knows many cues, including sit, paw, wait, lay, spin, turn around, let’s go, belly rubs, pray, and jump. His previous owner loved how playful he is, especially his ability to play fetch for hours. Rocky’s favorite activities include playing with a ball and swimming in a tub during the summer, and his favorite treat is the Dentley Rawhide Free Retriever roll. He eats dry food, specifically Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Chicken and Blue Buffalo Blue Wilderness Nature’s Evolutionary Diet Chicken.
Summary (6):: 5/18 Rocky is at the front of his kennel and is easily leashed. When leaving the room, Rocky attempts to kennel fight, barking and pulling at other dogs in the room. While kennel fighting, Rocky turns towards the staff member and redirects towards their leg, making contact but not with teeth, and leaving a wet mark on their pants. Rocky is then brought on a brief walk where he pulls a mild amount and has a soft body. He is then brought to a yard where he continues to have a soft body and plays with toys. When being returned to his kennel, Rocky kennel fights while staff rushes him past neighboring kennel. 5/17 Rocky is at the front of his kennel and is easily roped. He attempts to kennel fight as staff rush him past the other dogs in the room. Rocky is taken for a walk. During the walk, Rocky will pull towards and fixates on cars that drive by. It is difficult to break his attention while a car is passing, but once they pass, he recovers. Rocky does sit, down and paw for treats. Rocky accepts pets and climbs onto the staff member's lap when they sit to pet him. Rocky allows his leash to be clipped and kennel fights when returning to kennel. 5.13 Rocky is standing at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He is easily roped and walks right out of the kennel. When passing the other dogs in the room Rocky kennel fights, Barking and pulling towards them. He recovers as soon as he is out of the room. Rocky is taken for a brief walk. He walks nicely with just mild pulling, has a neutral body, and ignores people, cars and other dogs passed during the walk. Rocky is then brought to a yard and kept on leash. Rocky wanders the yard and sniffs at smells. When presented a toy rocky plays with it, grabbing it, squeaking it and dropping it multiple times. When staff sits on a bench, Rocky approaches them and stands next to the staff, where he accepts gentle pets. Rocky is then brought back to his kennel. He allows staff to clip his leash, and does attempt to kennel fight when returning as well.
Summary (7):: 5.11 Rocky is standing in his kennel when approached. He moves slowly forward as staff gives treats, but slowly moves away as staff attempts to leash him. He ignores other dogs as he leaves the room. Once leashed, he is taken on a brief walk. He walks slowly, regularly stopping to sniff smells. He has a neutral tail, alert ears, a tight mouth, and neutral body. He ignores people passing on the walk. Rocky is then taken to a yard and kept on a leash. He shows some interest in treats but does not accept any while outside. While in the yard, he sniffs at smells. When returning to his kennel, he allows staff to clip his leash. When returning to his kennel, another dog reacted, barking loudly, startling Rocky, who then pulled back towards the dog that reacted to him, investigating the noise. Staff is able to easily walk him away and to his kennel. 5/11 Rocky is barking as staff enters the room. He lunges as the door when approached and blocker is raised. He continues lunging as staff approaches from the side and kneels down. Once Rocky is quiet, staff clicks and offers a treat. Rocky head tilts as staff clicks again and offers another treat. We repeat this five more times. Rocky is asked to sit, and he stops with softer eyes and a slow wagging tail. When Rocky sits, staff clicks and rewards. Rock repeats this three more times. Rocky is asked for a down, he slowly slides into a down and rests on his side. Staff clicks and rewards. Staff stand up, and begin to walk back and forth past Rocky's kennel, clicking and rewarding as he remains quiet. 5/10: Rocky lunges at the door, hard barking at staff. He initially ignores treats tossed into kennel, keeping focus on the staff member. She kneels down outside of his kennel and tosses one treat and he eats it. Each time he reorientates back to the staff member, "YES" & treat tossed down again. They continue this pattern back and forth several times.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful potential for defensive aggression, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Other
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression: Rocky gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Rocky, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. On-Leash Reactivity: Rocky has shown reactivity on leash towards (people, dogs, other animals, moving objects). He will need an experienced owner familiar with working with this behavior. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Other: Prey Drive: Rocky has shown a high prey drive, chasing birds in the yard or on walks.
