Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 7/1/26: Dragon Tale is introduced to a novel intact female and approaches the fence with a neutral-tense body and high tail wags. He lightly stepped back and began whining while fixating on the other dog with a tense body. He then stood up lunging at the fence on his hind legs while alarm barking and slightly bared teeth. He did not disengage on his own and was pulled back and returned to kennel.

He also bit at the hook. 7/5/26: It is reported from ACS that Dragon Tales almost chewed through their leash during returning; also, he was observed highly kennel reactive during exciting and coming back. 7/2/26: Dragon Tales is at the front of his kennel with a loose body when the handler approaches. He starts jumping at the kennel door, but the handler puts the leash on using a treat lure. Dragon pulls hard while exiting and attempts to jump on the pop-up crate out of the room. Handler tosses more treats, and Dragon gets distracted. Dragon is not reacting to staff members in the hallways. Once outside, Dragon continues to walk with moderate pulling, slightly ahead of the handler. He keeps looking back at the handler for check-ins. When he sees another dog, his body tenses, and he pulls forward. Handler distracts him with a recall, and after Dragon looks back, he gets rewarded with a treat. Dragon doesn't react to other people passing by. On the way back, Dragon pulls towards pop-up crates again and is distracted with treats. During return, handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Dragon Tales back into the kennel without issue. 07/01/26: Dragon Tales is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he barks and jumps exuberantly at the kennel door. He is distracted with treats and follows more treats out of the room to the hallway. He shakes off once outside and walks with handler out to the street, outside Dragon stares at dogs from afar with a slightly tense body while quietly whining but when called by handler he turns and accepts treats from handler with moderate pressure. Dragon walks with handler for a while, stopping to relieve himself and pulling inquisitively toward people on the street but generally passing them without issue. Handler has trouble with getting Dragon to sit but he begins taking treats softer and walks calmly alongside handler. After a while he is brought back inside, he pulls hard when returning to kennel and toward the dogs he passes but he is kept away by handler, interaction is ended once he is returned to kennel.
Summary (7):: 06/30/26 (PM): Dragon Tales is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he is leashed while distracted with some treats and follows tossed treats down the kennel room and out to the hallway. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Dragon Tales so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the potential for redirection we recommend an aduly only home. Single Pet home/ No Dog Parks: Due to barking and lunging towards other dogs we recommend a single pet home that makes no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: On Leash Reactivity: Dragon Tales has been observed to bark and lunge towards other dogs. During one instance when a handler pulled him away from another dog, Dragon turned and snapped at them. Dragon will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
