Animal Profile

Mocha

Hello, my name is Mocha. My animal id is #223922. I am a desexed female black tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/16/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too fearful.

Mocha is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. She is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My favorite pastime is being visually admired! Pet me with your eyes! I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process! A volunteer writes: If Mocha was a person, she'd be a girl boss. Gorgeous, curious, and bold, she seems to prefer to be in control of her interactions with people and will accept pettings and playtime from her human servants when she decides she's in the mood. Her previous person vouched for this, telling us that Mocha will show off her independent streak by hanging out from afar, often in the living room, observing the action in the household but not soliciting attention. She's a fan of dry treats, not puree, and she's as smart as a whip, already picking up the basics of clicker training. We'd love to find new pet parents who will delight in her intelligence and independence but also get the feels when she's up for petting sessions. Meet Miss Mocha on 110th Street today!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/26/25 Vol. Mocha was lying down behind the shoreline in her double kennel. She is very attracted to dry treats, but uninterested in scallop chicken puree. She allowed pets with the back of the tool, raising her rear, but then suddenly turned around and hissed at the tool. I closed the kennel door and then she began to lie around and stretch, making eye contact with neutral eyes as if looking for more interaction. She may be prone to overstimulation and is still conflicted. 4/27/25 FB32 Tolerates petting and attention; however, very uncomfortable with handling. She was not interested in retreating into the den, so it was removed. When reaching close with the towel, she begins hissing and growling. When covering her body, she stress meow-screams, rolls around, and swats to maintain distance. She was eventually offered the den again to corner her, and then she slowly walks in to hide. 4/27/25 Vol. Lying near front of kennel behind Shoreline cover, but peeking out under the corner. Sniffed the air and reached out a paw.  Enjoyed treats given through the bars. Offered a finger to sniff and she nibbled lightly on it. Rubbed against the bars and my fingers, but was very twitchy, and then raised a paw and lightly batted. Cute and conflicted. 4/28/25 FB32 Sitting up at back of shelf with neutral body and wide eyes. Rushes forward when offered treats. Begin clicker training to have her sniff my finger as a target. She does very well after 5 repetition and begins rubbing her face on my finger, so I click and reward for that behavior for 3 more times. Very enthusiastically chases and grabs the treats tossed into the kennel. 4/28/25 ACFR Standing at the front of the kennel, rubbing against the bars as I approach. Finger is offered to clicker train, and she takes a few seconds before lightly tapping my finger with her paw. I mark with a click and treat. This is repeated 10 more times followed with a click and treat to mark. She alternates between tapping my finger and occasionally coming up to head bunt it. 4/30/25 Vol. Mocha was lying sprawled out on shelf in main kennel, with legs and tail spread away from her body. She eagerly ate treats, then came down to front of kennel, standing tall with her head in the air. She rubbed her face against kennel wall, then head bunted and leaned into cheek rubs. She alternated between leaning into pets and rubbing against surfaces in her kennel for a few minutes. Her tail swished slowly, but she did not escalate or show other signs of overstimulation. In response to commotion in the hallway, she became wide-eyed and alert, sitting up on her rear legs to look around like a meerkat. She quickly calmed down, and leaned into more cheek rubs while purring quietly.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Curious,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Rough play,Fearful,Uncomfortable with pick up,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Very uncomfortable with pick up or handling; she may hiss, growl, stress meow, or swat (see Enrichment Note above from 4/27/25 for more details).

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to fearfulness in shelter, uncomfortable with pick up, and reported rough play and unsuccessful cat-cat interaction in the previous home.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Mocha was initially resting by the front and hissed when approached. She slowly retreated, growling softly with her ears forward. She allowed petting with a scratcher tool but started to withdraw after a few strokes. She head-butted and rubbed against her litter box, continuing to hiss intermittently. The assessment ended to reduce her stress, and although she was curious about offered treats, she only began eating once left alone. Mocha tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. Any future home with children or as visitors should be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking her up, especially while they’re adjusting to their new home.
