Sprinkles

Hello, my name is Sprinkles. My animal id is #224691. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/15/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Sprinkles is at risk due to behavior concerns. Sprinkles was reported to have bitten a worker while they were in his building; however, this information has been difficult to verify. In the Care Centers, Sprinkles has shown a tense body posture and tends to fixate on other dogs when they are nearby, sometimes making it difficult to redirect his focus. He also displays signs of fear, especially during handling assessments, where he remains tense. Despite these challenges, Sprinkles responds positively to treats and enjoys engaging with toys. Medically, Sprinkles has a wound.

Date of intake:: 4/15/2025

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray (Limited History )

Bite history:: The police were called by the building manager to pick up Sprinkles, who had been abandoned in the building's hallway. The building manager reported that Sprinkles tried to bite one of the workers, although no bites were confirmed. The police noted that the information about whether a bite occurred or was merely attempted was inconsistent. As a result, Sprinkles is not currently (DOH).

Date of assessment:: 4/17/2025

Summary:: Sprinkles arrived at QUACC from the NYPD following a NYCHA manager stating that the dog attempted to bite one of the workers but there were no confirmed bites. The police stated that the person would give conflicting information on whether or not a bite was actually done or just attempted. Upon intake, Sprinkles has remained fearful in care, and in his crate began to low growl as intake staff were removing him from the crate. Upon ACC admissions staff following up with the potential owner, they were told that a maintenance worker was fixing the elevator in the basement when a dog appeared and began growling at him. As he backed away, the dog lunged and grabbed his leg, bite-and-holding. The owner and a coworker attempted to get the dog to release by grabbing the dog's legs. Ultimately, the worker had to put his fingers into the dog’s mouth to free his leg. The worker has 5 large wounds on his leg, along with multiple scratches and a wound on his finger. Due to the severity of the bite, the behavior team believes Sprinkles is not a safe candidate for a handling assessment.

Summary (6):: 04/24/25 (KSV): Sprinkles is observed barking with a wiggly body as the handler attempts to work with a nearby dog. As the handler backs away, he jumps on the door barking. When the handler gets the neighboring dog out, Sprinkles again jumps on the door, this time hard barking with a tense body and high flagging tail as the dog walks past.

Summary (7):: 4/16/25 (assessment attempt): Sprinkles was sitting neutrally at front of kennel with his frozen enrichment out of reach. Handler slid it back into kennel before briefly leaving the room. When handler returned, Sprinkles started eating his frozen enrichment more rapidly while flagging his tail. He stood in the center of kennel and did not come forward with the door ajar or verbal coaxing. Handler gave him a few minutes to enjoy his enrichment. When they returned, Sprinkles appeared looser at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. Upon exiting kennel, he sniffed handler's knee intently. Handler kept him moving through the doorway using directional leash pressure and he pulled moderately to the BA room. Upon entering the room, Sprinkles slowly tip-toed towards handler 2 with a very tense frame and hackles raised. Handler 2 tossed a piece of sausage which he caught and then dropped. Sprinkles made audible breathing sounds with no leash pressure applied. Sprinkles did not soften, so handlers opted to return him to kennel. Handler 2 walked ahead (carrying canned sausages) and Sprinkles pulled hard behind them, at times almost hopping on hind legs. He followed a piece of sausage back into kennel and leash was removed without issue. 04/16/25:Sprinkles greets the handler standing in front of the kennel door with a neutral frame. The second handler hands him treats through the kennel bars. Sprinkles takes them gently before offering a sit to solicit more. Sprinkles frame loosens up. The first handler feeds him treats through the door as he is leashed easily. Sprinkles is escorted out of the care center for a street walk. When on leash Sprinkles will hard pull as hard as he can. Sprinkles will seek out where other dogs have marked and proceed to mark as well. When other dogs pass Sprinkles will fixate grow still and track them, Sometimes attempting to pull towards their direction. Sprinkles can be distracted with treats or a toy momentarily but in one instance Sprinkles immediately drops the toy, closes his mouth and remains still with a forward posture. The handler is able to guide him away. Sprinkles is escorted back to the care center but when passing another dog Sprinkles will stop taking treats. Upon approaching the kennel Sprinkles will hard pull in and immediately investigate the toys laid inside before drinking from his bowl. He is safely secured in his kennel. 04/16/25 Witnessed pulling towards other dogs while on walk. When carrying a toy on his walk, he will drop it when seeing dogs with novel handlers. When tossed treats, he is irresponsive, fixated on the dogs passing by with their novel handlers.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the Behaviors seen in the Care Centers, and possible bite, Sprinkles should go to a home with no children. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in the Care Centers environment, the behavior department recommends Sprinkles be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Sprinkles to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Sprinkles to new and unfamiliar situations.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (human)

On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Strength/leash pulling: In care Sprinkles has shown to hard pull on walks and become reactive when seeing other dogs on the walks.
