Dill Pickle
Hello, my name is Dill Pickle . My animal id is #222020. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/8/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormDill Pickle is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Dill Pickle has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has displayed concerning behaviors towards another dog during a walk. When approached in kennel, he has been observed to pant heavily, jump on the kennel door, and demand barks. He does not take treats and has difficulty settling. During a walk, Dill charged at another dog after lunging and getting loose from the handler walking him when they bent down to collect his stool. The handler with the other dog has to pick up their large dog and put it on top of a car to increase the distance between Dill Pickle and the other dog. He continued to jump up and snap at the other dog while other handlers run over to assist in separating the dogs by grabbing their leashes. No contact or injury was made to either dog. Medically, Dill Pickle has CIRDC.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Medically, Dill Pickle has CIRDC. Dill Pickle came into the care center as a stray but spent 3 weeks in the finders home. It is noted that he loves car rides. he knows the cues sit, walk, stay, and paw. He loves balls, chicken, kibble, and snacks. In the care center, He struggles to self-regulate, showing a flushed face, dilated pupils, and heavy panting when out of the kennel. Dill Pickle has displayed a high level of reactivity towards other dogs. He was observed hard staring at another dog with a tense, square posture before lunging, pulling his handler off balance, and charging. Even after the other dog was lifted onto a car, Dill Pickle continued to jump up, snapping in their direction. Given his arousal levels, difficulty redirecting, and reactivity toward other dogs, Dill Pickle would benefit from placement with a New Hope partner who can provide structured training, behavior management, and appropriate outlets for his energy.

Dill this time will approach a bit more moderately, scenting the novel female dog at the gate and visibly becoming softer in his face and frame. Dill will show signs of sexual motivation as he stands on his tip toes attempting to appear bigger with a fast-high flagging tail. Dill will vocalize at the novel female dog attempting to solicit her attention; however, she ignores him. She maintains her distance from the gate while Dill Pickle remains self-present. Dill is returned to kennel, entering the building and his kennel with no issue. 03/14/25: Dill Pickle was observed hard staring at dogs with a tense, square body. Handler cracks open the kennel door and he begins shoving his head into the crack to exit kennel. Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety- Dill Pickle appears anxious at the care center, whining when walking and throughout playgroup and his assessment. His owner described him as an anxious dog, but did not give details on how the anxiety manifested. If Dill pickle displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During an incident in care he displayed a hard stare and maintained a tense, square body posture while fixating on another dog. When his handler bent down to pick up his feces, Dill Pickle lunged, pulling the handler over and yanking the leash from their hand. He then charged the other dog , maintaining a tense body posture. The handler of lifted their dog onto a car for safety, but Dill Pickle continued to jump up repeatedly towards the other dog. Kennel presence- It is reported that Dill Pickle will jump in front of his kennel door barking and heavy panitng. Low threshold for arousal-In the care center, He struggles to self-regulate, showing a flushed face, dilated pupils, and heavy panting when out of the kennel. Dill Pickle has displayed a high level of reactivity towards other dogs.
