Summary (5):: 9/15/26: Maxime is at the front of the kennel with a soft body, she looks to neighboring kennel with a tense face. She pulls hard out if the room. Maxime is taken to backyard (the yard is closed to all dogs during this interaction) and picks up a ball. She walks around the yard playing with the ball and chewing it. Handler tries to engage in fetch with her but she does not return the ball and makes a small pile of them. After sometime, handler attempts to call her over to be re-leashed. Maxime does not approach the handler and hovers over the ball. Handler tosses treats but she remains by the ball. Handler tries to leash her and she keeps her head lowered over the ball. Maxime is then re-leashed successfully after a brief moment. Maxime pulls hard back to her kennel and is returned to kennel without issue. 9/9/26: Maxime is reported to pull hard with a lowered body; pulls very hard and presenting anxiousness while returning her to kennel 9/8/26: Maxime is sitting at the front of the kennel with a soft body and eyes with a fast wagging tail. She is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the kennel. She looks towards the passing kennels as she is taken into the backyard, which is closed to all dogs. Maxime is placed on a drag leash and she walks around the yard. She finds a tennis ball and begins chasing them around the yard. She stops to chew them for awhile and walks around carrying them. She does this for awhile and does not engage with treats or trades the ball for them. After sometime, handler coaxes Maxime with treats. She ignores them and remains where she is holding the ball. Handler pulls out another ball and Maxime approaches. She is leashed using the ball as a lure and takes it. She carries the ball and pulls hard back towards her kennel. She is returned without issue. 9/02/26: Maxime is at the front of her kennel with a soft body as handler approaches. She is easily leashed and readily exits the kennel. While leaving the room, Maxime initially shows interest in treats but quickly loses interest after she notices dogs in the neighboring kennels. She begins pulling strongly toward the front kennel with tense body and had to be muscled out of the room. Once in the yard, Maxime immediately relieves herself and is placed on the drag-line after she enters the pen. She becomes more focused on the handler and is easier to engage. She is social, readily accepts petting and treats, remaining soft body. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Maxime back into her kennel with no issues

Summary (6):: 8/26/26: Maxime is sitting at the front of her kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed with a treat lure and willingly exits the kennel. While leaving the room, Maxime is interested in treats on the ground but quickly looses interest and pulls strongly toward the front kennels, attempting to kennel fight. Handler have to muscle her out of the room. Once in the yard, Maxime immediately relives herself. After entering the pen, she becomes more focused on the handler. She is social and responsive; she is readily allows petting and leans into the handler, seeking additional interaction. She gently accepts treats and follows verbal cues. Maxime remains soft body and relaxed face. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Maxime back into her kennel with ease. 8/12/26: Maxime is sitting with soft body at the front of her kennel when handler approaches. She is easily leashed with a treat lure; while exiting the room, Maxime's body slightly tenses and she pulls hard towards front kennel attempting to start kennel fighting. Handler is able to shorten the leash and muscle Maxime out of the room. Once in the yard, Maxime pulls hard towards the pen and relieves herself. Maxime is social and focused on the handler. She allows petting and leans onto the handler fore more. She gently takes treats and follows verbal cues. She is engaged in pattern games and follows command "sit". Her body remains soft with relaxed face during the interaction. Upon return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Maxime back into the kennel with no issues. 8/12/26: Maxime is asleep, but then wakes up and stands with a soft body; she is easily leashed and brought out the kennel. While exiting the room, Maxime turns her upper body and fixates on the kennels she passes; once out the room, she turns to look back at the dogs in the room, so the handler applies some leash pressure to bring her into the yard. In the pen, the handler places Maxime on a drag line; after she sniffs around the yard, she approaches the handler sitting on the bench. The handler "loads" their clicker, by clicking it and rewarding Maxime with a treat, which she eats softly. The handler attempts the Up/Down pattern game by placing a treat on the ground, but she doesn't eat them, so they go back to loading the clicker. Maxime allows pets, and doesn't react to other handlers/staff walking past. Before entering the building, the handler clips their leash and presents a handful of treats to Maxime, who shows interest. However, as they walk back into the room and the handler tosses treats, Maxime shows no interest; she looks at the kennels but doesn't pull towards them. The handler is able to return Maxime with ease

Summary (7):: 8/05/26: Maxime is known to bark and pull towards unfamiliar people even inside the building. It is reported that handlers find it difficult to navigate the upstairs hallways due to this reactivity. 7/25/26: Maxime is at the front soft body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the kennel. Maxime is walked to the street. She stares at people with a loose body and wagging tail. She hard stares at dogs that are nearby, the handler tries to redirect her with treats and squeakers, this is unsuccessful. Maxime is then walked back to the shelter, she stares at people passing her with a slightly tense face. Maxime is walked back inside and taken upstairs, she is returned to kennel without issue 7/23/26: It is reported via whiteboard that Maxime might have stranger danger; she growled at someone and got tense when 3 people were walking by. It's also noted that she is scared of the stairs and elevator. 7/15/26: It is noted on the whiteboard "dog reactive, kennel reactive" for Maxime. 7/14/26: Maxime is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room to the street. On the street, Maxime walks with a loose body on the street, she stops to sniff her surroundings. She follow the command sit and handler offers her treats which she takes them gently. Maxime is walked back to the shelter, she kennel fights with the passing crates, pulling towards them with a tense body and her hackles raised. Maxime is brought to the assessment office, she approaches the assessor with a soft body and wagging tail. After her assessment, Maxime is brought back to kennel, she pulls towards the passing kennels, staring at them with a tense face. She pulls towards a neighboring kennel with a tense face. Handler tosses treats and she is then muscled back into kennel. 07/14/26: Maxime is reportedly reactive and pulls toward kennels she passes, during this she attempts to turn around toward handler

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Maxime so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the potential for redirection, we recommend an adult only home. Single-Pet Home/No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Maxime has shown in care, including on leash reactivity and the potential for redirection, we feel that she should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Maxime associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: On Leash Reactivity: Maxime has been observed to be highly reactive. Noted to bark and growl at other dogs during intake. While in care, Maxime has been observed to pull hard towards the other kennels and then turn towards the handler. Recently Maxime has been observed to bark and pull towards people in the hallways. This behavior has made it difficult to walk her in the building. Maxime will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Maxime is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. Her adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that she be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish her strength through leverage, and that she be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
