Other Notes:: Chasey's previous owner reports that he has high stranger danger and will hard bark/lunge at people and be fixated until he is familiar with them. He has no experience being walked by anyone but the direct family in the household.

Summary:: Chasey has shown fearful defensive behavior at the care centers, including lunging, hard barking, and baring teeth at handlers during his intake. Out of concern for Chasey's stress levels, a handling assessment was not conducted at this time.

Summary:: Chasey arrived as an owner surrender and is noted by his our to lunge and hard bark at other dogs on walks. 9/23/26: Chasey greets a novel female dog through a barrier. Chasey appears fearful and wary but chooses to approach the gate while the novel female remains loose and attempts to greet appropriately. Chasey does not become tense toward the novel female but remains focused on seeking an exit and eventually chooses to disengage and walk out of the yard.

Summary (6):: 9/28/26: Chasey is laying down on his bed as handler approaches. He slowly approaches the front as the handler unlocks the door is able to be leashed with ease. He is then taken outside for walk. Along the way, he would pull ahead while hard staring at a dog that was exiting the building. When exiting the building, he continues to hard stare at the dog that was further away up the hill. He would then continue to hard stare and pull hard in the directions of other dogs that were nearby. Due to high dog traffic, he is then quickly taken in the yard. In the yard, he quickly relieves himself. The handler then allows him to sniff for a second as they start to walk back out to exit the yard. But he then hears someone across the street sneeze, and he then jumps up flinches and redirected towards the handler's leg. The handler is able to continue to exit the yard, and he would hypersalivate while hard staring at dogs on the way back into building. He is then placed back into his kennel with no further issues.

Summary (7):: 9/26/26: Chasey is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he would pace around with a neutral body and would constantly approach the door. He would approach the handler's and stare at the treats. He would flinch when he heard loud surroundings sounds. He begins to stare at the handler that was slowly passed, he then lunges, growls and snaps and start to bite at their shoe. He is able to be taken away and is then taken back to his kennel. When entering his kennel he spins around and jumps up and bites at the leash as the handler unleashes him and locks the door. 09/24/26 (PG): Chasey is sitting at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He retreats to the back of this kennel as they unlock the door. The handler will crouch down and toss treats which Chasey will take. Chasey will take treats from the handler's hand as they slowly leash him. Chasey will exit the kennel with a low body and will walk towards the elevator close to the wall. Chasey is brought to the play yard to play group (See D2D for mor information). Chasey is kept on a slip leash throughout as he is not yet collared. He is introduced to novel female will approach and retreat the gate, and will then see exit from the play yard with a low body. Chasey is returned to his kennel without issue 09/23/26(PG Note): Chasey is lying down in the back of his kennel and will allow the handler to leash him but will pull away, initially refusing to come out of his kennel. The handler will apply slight leash pressure, after which Chasey will begin walking. He will then be brought to the play yard to meet a female playmate. Once inside the yard, he will not receive a drag leash or collar and will instead be walked to the gate on a slip lead for a nose to nose greeting. While walking, Chasey will display skittish and fearful behaviors and engage in displacement sniffing while avoiding the gate after noticing the other dog. Once called over to the gate, he will sniff the other dog’s nose and immediately disengage while displaying a tucked tail, pinned-back ears, and hypervigilance. ENERGY LEVEL:: Chasey is described as a very high energy dog by his previous owners. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Chasey.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to his high levels of fearfulness, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial for Chasey at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the reactivity reported in a home environment and Chasey's fearful behavior at the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Chasey has shown fearful behavior, escalating to hard barking, lunging, and showing teeth during his intake at the care center. It is important to move slowly with Chasey, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and is not soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Chasey's previous owners report that he barks and lunges at others dogs while on leash. Chasey may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
