Sol
Hello, my name is Sol. My animal id is #223646. I am a desexed female gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/6/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.
Sol is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is declining in the Adoptions room. She is now displaying signs of confliction and overstimulation. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Sol solicits attention and accepts petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. We feel that this cat will do best in a home without very young children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents well counseled in overstimulation and overarousal. A volunteer writes: What kind of cat is Sol? She's "purrfect," as her previous person put it, a playful, social young girl who enjoys fetching toys and chasing bugs as much as she digs chilling out on the couch. She likes being around her humans, sitting by the window, filing her nails with her carpet scratch pad, and even watching TV. Care Center staffers also had great things to say about Sol, describing her as mellow, sweet, people-oriented, and an enthusiastic fan of pettings. Sol herself isn't talking, but she radiates confidence and coolness yet seems to have a silly side as well. Meet Miss Sol on 110th Street today!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 04/07/25 ACFR Sol is laying in her den upon approach, pupils dilated, lip licking. She allows petting on the head and cheeks with the scratcher tool but remains tense. She does not accept offered squeeze up treat, but accepts crunchy treats and allows them to be slowly placed in front of her. 4/12/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Sol was sitting upright and alert upon approach, with wide eyes. She hissed when spoken to softly. She showed curiosity when offered treats, and while eating, she briefly tolerated petting with the scratcher tool along her head and back. However, she slowly lifted her head, then retreated, continuing to hiss and low growl while observing from a distance. The assessment was ended early to reduce her stress. 05/02/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT Sol was in the cubby and enjoyed petting. She was easily coaxed down into the main part of the kennel using treats, where she continued to enjoy petting and tolerated being picked up. She remained calm when set back down. However, when some water was accidentally spilled and the assessor attempted to clean it with a towel, Sol became slightly upset and hissed. She’s a sweet cat who has greatly improved.

The door is opened and she comes down from the shelf, head bunting assessor's hand and allowing petting on the head, cheeks, and shoulders. She is able to be picked up and held for a few seconds, remaining calm while being held and continues to be calm as she is placed back down. Sol goes to eat her dry food and is no longer receptive to interaction, hissing and swatting at assessor's hand when any further interaction is attempted.
