Titan
Hello, my name is Titan. My animal id is #236851. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 10/23/2025.
Titan is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Titan has shown increased kennel reactivity, including hard barking, lunging at the glass, and displaying teeth when approached and is deteriorating in the care center. Although he can become loose and wiggly once coaxed for leashing, he remains aloof and tense on walks, showing whale eye and pulling strongly. Medically, Titan is overweight but otherwise healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary:: Returned 10/23 as a stray. 10/29/25 Titan is introduced to an unfamiliar female dog while off leash at the care center. Titan will stand still and present in front of the gate, pawing at it as the female dog approaches the gate line loose and wiggly. Titan is moved into his pen in order to allow the female dog into his pen to greet face-to-face. Titan collects treats from the handler as the female dog approaches him, sniffing him as he remains still displaying very light hackles. Titan will exchange body contact with the female dog and block her direction as she attempts to create space. Titan will do chin overs, making the female dog uncomfortable as Titan appears sexually motivated. Titan is moved away, allowing the female dog to create space willingly before she is moved back into her pen. Titan is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. Although Titan was surrendered, there is no information provided about his dog-to-dog history. 10/15/25 Titan is introduced to an unfamiliar male dog while on leash at the care center. Titan approaches the gate initially with a soft, wiggly frame, offering bounces along the gate. He is taken into the male dogs pen while still on leash and the male dog approaches Titan exuberantly, making Titan uncomfortable. Titan is tolerant to the male dog's excessiveness, sniffing Titan and making body contact. Titan will snarl at the male dog when he is paw slapped, becoming immediately frustrated. Both dogs are moved away and returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 09/22/25 Titan is introduced to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. Titan appears nervous as the female dog enters the pen and initially creates distance before approaching to sniff the female dog. The female dog will sniff Titan as he does her and as she attempts to solicit play, Titan becomes nervous, running away. As the female dog is kept away, Titan will attempt to reapproach her but as she turns around with a wiggly body, attempting to solicit play by making body contact, Titan runs away. Both dogs are returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (5):: 11/30/25: Titan is reported to not want to leave kennel, lunge and hard bark at the glass and not be as social during interactions as he usually is. 11/29/25(assessment): Titan is lying in the middle of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls hard to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment. Titan is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. He approaches handler when called and leans into petting before pacing around the room. He begins to whine and is avoidant of assessor as they call him over to position him for assessment. Handler is able to lure Titan closer by kneeling down. After assessment, Titan paces for a few minutes before settling and lying down in the middle of the room. He becomes tense and begins to low growl as he notices someone walk by through the window of the office door. Titan is returned to kennel safely. 11/30/25: Titan is reported to not want to leave kennel, lunge and hard bark at the glass and not be as social during interactions as he usually is. 11/28/25: Titan is observed to hard bark and growl at kennel front as they pass out enrichment items. 11/16/25: Behavior handler's assistance is requested due to another staff member's leash being stuck on Titan in kennel and him reportedly biting and growling at the hook being used in an attempt to remove it. As behavior handler approaches, they notice the lead has fallen off of Titan and is lying on his kuranda bed as he stands at the front of kennel with a toy in his mouth. Behavior handler leashes Titan with ease and removes him from kennel so the leash can be retrieved. He is returned to kennel without issue and resumes chewing on his toy at the front of kennel.
Summary (6):: 11/9/25: Titan is at the back of his kennel hard barking, baring teeth but when coaxed over to be leashed is loose/wiggly and is easily leashed. Titan is walked outside, pulling hard and is mostly aloof to the handler, even when coaxed, whale eyeing and containing to walk. Titan relives himself, and afterwards seems more comfortable. When coaxed again will lean into contact but still continue on his walk briefly after. Titan is easily leashed, and walked into kennel with no issue, and given a toy to enjoy. 10/26: Titan was observed to have a hard bark and attempted to rush towards other dogs' crates when a handler was returning him to his crate. At roughly 6pm staff (EH) entered D2 to observe the dogs and offer treats. At first entrance, Titan barked and remained at the back of his kennel. A milkbone was tossed into the kennel which he took to his bed and ate. He did not respond to praise or baby voice. After a few minutes of offering the other dogs treats, Titan showed more interest and approached the kennel door without barking to ask for treats. He very gently took a milkbone through the kennel gate multiple times. He responded to the sit command multiple times with ease. After taking each treat, he would return to his bed to eat it. After a couple of repetitions, Titan began to wait at the kennel door silently for treats and his body appeared to relax slightly. When leaving the room Titan began to bark, but was given the sit command and asked to stay, which he did silently while staff left the room and gave praise. Overall Titan appeared timid, but willing to engage at his own pace when more comfortable and given time to adjust. 10/12/25: Titan is observed to lunge, hard bark and bare teeth at the front of his kennel when approached. 9/20/25: Titan is laying on his bed as the handler approaches the kennel. The handler speaks to him softly and he begins to get up slowly, stretching and yawning with a soft face and wideset ears. He approaches the door and is leashed with ease. Titan pulls mildly with a tense body, his nails gripping the floor as he slips through the hallway. Outside, Titan sniffs and watches two other dogs with a neutral frame as they bark at him. When returning into the building, Titan will begin to slip on the floor again until reaching his kennel where his is secured safely with no issue.
Summary (7):: 9/17(PM): Titan is curled up in his bed when 2 handlers approach. He begins growling but doesn't move from his bed. One of the handlers offers sausages and rolls some into his kennel, but he continues to growl and does not attempt to sniff them. The handler moves slowly and unlocks the kennel door. Titan rises and continues growling, which ends in whines. He begins to approach the front of the kennel, and the handler bends to one knee, but then Titan bolts to the back when his kuranda bed slides from under him. He then bares his teeth, growls, and lowers his head. The handler slowly leashes him, and he races out of the kennel. Titan is taken outside for a walk, remaining stiff and briefly stops to scent, but then begins pulling, intermittently turning back to whale eye both handlers when he sees them behind him. On the way back to the building, one of the handlers goes inside to check to see if his kennel is cleaned. Titan begins moving closer to the second handler when he sees traffic crawl by and other dog/handler pairs ahead, while they stand off to the side by the hydrant. The first handler comes back and signals his kennel is ready before attempting to take his picture. Titan bares his teeth and fully presses his rear against the other handler when they take two steps forward. Titan is then immediately returned to his kennel, and a hook is used to remove the lead. He does duck away from the hook but doesn't escalate. The lead is loose and he maneuvers his head out of the loop and the handler can remove the lead without further issue. 09/17/25: Titan is lying down at the back of his kennel as the handler approaches and will begin low growling and lip curling. The handler offers tossed treats as a peace offering, then steps away momentarily. Titan gets up, walks to the front and eats the treats provided. When the handler reapproaches Titan returns to the back of the kennel and resumes low growling. With the kennel door closed, the handler then opens the door and lassos Titan on the first attempt, landing the lead around the back of his neck and holding it gently until Titan gets up. The leash is then secured around his neck. Titan exits with a tucked tail, pinned-back ears, and is highly hypervigilant of his surroundings. After some time outside, he begins to settle, engages in sniffing, and relieves himself while walking with the handler. Once he’s completed his walk Titan is returned to his kennel safely without any issues.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During intake Titan tail tucked, He warmed up and took treats gently, when another staff member came into room he began whale eyeing and a tightly tucked tail and was shying away from the leash. During his medical exam titan will take treats but started to show teeth when approached; was able to muzzle and do all tasks. Barrier frustration/Kennel presence: Titan is lying down at the back of his kennel as the handler approaches and will begin low growling and lip curling. This behavior suggests discomfort with close proximity and potential for escalation if pressured, requiring slow, non-confrontational approaches and positive reinforcement to reduce stress at the kennel front. Please see the handout Barrier frustration/Kennel presence. Strength/leash pulling: Titan is noted to hard pull while on walks. Structured walks with appropriate equipment (such as a front-clip harness) and reinforcement for loose-leash walking will help manage his strength and improve handler control. Please see the handout Strength/leash pulling.
