The bite was a bite-and-release to the hand, resulting in three puncture wounds that required medical treatment. Miracle in the care center has been social and affectionate with staff. Medically, Miracle recently was treated for CIRDC and is healthy at this time. Miracle was surrendered by her previous owner due to a bite incident in the previous home. Her previous family described her as a social, affectionate, very active, and playful dog who enjoyed spending her time with her people or lounging in the living room. She has been reported to love going for car rides, playing tag, enjoys bacon flavored treats, chicken, and most biscuits she is offered. Miracle is noted to guard food and treats and escalated to biting the resident child when her food was touched while she was eating. The bite resulted in three puncture wounds to the hand and required medical attention. During her staying care, Miracle has been loose-bodied and mostly social with handlers. Due to the concerns reported in a previous home, we recommend that Miracle be placed in an adult-only home without cats or smaller animals through a New Hope Rescue partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

S: Examination for post-bite quarantine/DOH hold. Eating normal, normal urination/defecation. No c/s/v/d. Reported to have a social demeanor, but high displaying high FAS in kennel during exam. O: BAR mentation with no neurologic abnormalities. A: High FAS in shelter No neurologic abnormalities - OK to release from DOH hold. P: OK to release from DOH hold and to schedule next steps. Rx Trazodone 200mg BID until further directed.

Upon intake, dog was very friendly and outgoing. She was easily leashed, walked, and placed in kennel after she requested pets and jumped up on staff in a friendly manner.

How is this dog around children?: Friendly, playful, and outgoing. May alert bark or growl.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Friendly, playful, and outgoing but may alert bark or growl at familiar dogs and with unfamiliar dog she will also growl or alert bark but is primarily friendly and outgoing both on and off-leash

How is this dog around cats?: Hard barks or growls

Resource guarding:: Considers food and treats items of high value and will have a tense body or hover over the items but can escalate to snapping if her initial warning is not respected

Bite history:: Yes, has one reported incident towards a child. It is her only incident and occurred because her food was approached. The incident was a bite and release but did require medical attention due to the child's age.

Housetrained:: Yes

Other Notes:: Knows to relieve herself outside during walks and doesn't have indoor accidents. She is fearful of loud noises such as fireworks, storms, or loud arguments, and is very protective of her food but will take treats gently. On walks she may stare at small animals or other dogs and solicit play or pull towards them in a friendly manner. She is unbothered by being held or restrained, disturbed when sleeping or resting, being moved from furniture, having her paws touched or her collar grabbed. She has never been startled.

For a New Family to Know: She is described as a social, affectionate, very active, and playful dog who enjoys spending her time where her people are or in the living room of her home. She loves going for a car ride and spending time with people. She reportedly loves to play tag with her family, will dance with her family, and loves to meet new people. She enjoys bacon flavored treats, chicken meat, and most biscuits she is offered. She is accustomed to going on 2 walks a day during which she pulls mild to moderately on her leash and she knows the cues sit, paw, and stay. Her previous family noted that she is great dog who loves her people loyally.

Summary (7):: 08/04/26: Miracle is standing at the front of her kennel and will allow the handler to leash her with ease. She will then be brought to the play yard for an enrichment outing. Once inside the yard, a drag leash will be placed on her, and she will roam the yard freely while exploring, sniffing her surroundings, and relieving herself. Once this session is concluded, Miracle will be brought back to her kennel safely without any issues. 07/29/26 (BA note): Miracle is standing at the front of her kennel and will allow the handler to leash her with ease. She will then be brought to the assessment room, where she will allow handlers to place a drag leash and collar on her. Miracle will allow all handling, will complete the run portion without becoming aroused, does not respond to the knock test, and will sniff the toy before disengaging and walking away. Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Miracle's bite history, resource guarding, and reported occasional growling at children, we recommend an adult-only home at this time. No cats: Miracle is reported to bark hard and growl at cats. Due to these behaviors, we recommend that Miracle be placed in a home without cats or smaller animals. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Miracle be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow her to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Miracle to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior she presents with outside of the care centers.
