Maxxie
Hello, my name is Maxxie. My animal id is #228442. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/1/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMaxxie is at risk due to behavioral concerns in care. Maxxie has made it difficult for handlers to walk and remove him from his kennel due to muzzle punching the kennel door along with bare teeth and hard barking. Once out of kennel, he remains anxious but has shown moments of social behavior with handlers and will engage with enrichment puzzles. Medically, Maxxie is apparently healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Medically, Maxxie is apparently healthy Maxxie came into the care center as a stray, so behavior history in a home environment is unknown. In the care center, he has not adjusted well and will go towards the back of her kennel, baring her teeth when handlers approach her kennel, and will snap when leashed. He has shown to warm up by selective handlers and will exhibit social behavior such as learning to be petted and engaging with toys or enrichment items. Maxxie is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I need a home where there are no other dogs. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: Due to Maxxie entering the facility as astray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 06/12/25: While off-leash at the Care Center, Maxxie is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate, Maxxie approaches with a neutral posture. The female dog approaches with a relaxed body and light trot. Both dogs sniff one another through the gate. The female remains loose and calm, her tail softly swaying. In contrast, Maxxie becomes tense, with hackles gradually rising and tail held high and curved. Maxxie lunges at the gate, prompting immediate separation. The female briefly retreats but quickly regains a relaxed posture and wagging tail. The interaction is then concluded. 06/04/25 Maxxie is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Maxxie will approach the gate with a soft frame and high curved tail as he scents the novel female dog through the gate. The novel female dog is soft and wiggly, offering herself by pressing her rear against the gate. Maxxie appears conflicted, heavily panting as he walks away. The novel female dog remains self-present as Maxxie returns to the gate maintaining a soft frame and slow swaying tail. Maxxie walks away, soliciting attention from his handler and ultimately maintaining his distance from the gate. Maxxie is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (4):: 6/26/25: Maxxie was standing on kennel door with his muzzle squashed against the glass. He got down and stood on all fours as handler offered treats and clipped leash to collar without issue. He low grumbled and barked at a staff member in the hall. Maxxie walked to the yard where he was clipped to a drag leash. He independently engaged with a soft squeaker toy which he would fling around and shake. Maxxie solicited treats and pets and would lean into handler. Maxxie began to pick up his drag leash and flail it around like he was doing with his toy. Handler was able to redirect him back to the toy a number of times but opted to return him to kennel as he was losing interest in the toy. When handler attempted to place slip leash over head Maxxie took hold of it in his mouth so handler let go. Maxxie continued to shake the drag leash and slip leash for some time, making low vocalizations as he did so. Handler requested assistance from their team due to Maxxie's arousal. He was placed back on the slip leash while fed treats by handler 2. Handler 2 accompanied Maxxie back to kennel. Maxxie pulled towards a neighboring kennel and was guided into kennel using directional leash pressure. As handler was removing leash, Maxxie began to leash bite again. Handler dropped leash and Maxxie continued to play with leash. He grabbed it when handler tried to retrieve it with a hook. Handler 2 distracted Maxxie with a toy and the leash was able to be retrieved with the hook. 6/24/25: Maxxie was climbing up on kennel door panting heavily and hypersalivating on glass (excessive heat warning in effect may have been a contributing factor.) As handler crouched in doorway, Maxxie remained on all fours while the leash was clipped to his collar. He walked to the BA room with handler 1, spotted by handler 2. Maxxie was free to move around the room on a drag leash and chose to engage with LATTE puzzles. He favored spray cheese in a puzzle bowl and ate a frozen treat. He was excellent at solving a sliding puzzle and made sure to get every last crumb. He gave a loose tail wag when handlers engaged with him. Maxxie was returned to kennel on the drag leash, accompanied by handler 2. He walked straight back into kennel and remained on all fours as handler 1 crouched down and unclipped leash. Handler tossed a handful of treats over top of kennel which Maxxie searched for and ate.
Summary (5):: 06/23/25 Due to an increase in aggression when removing from kennel, Maxxie is left inside. Maxxie will muzzle punch the kennel door along with bare teeth and hard bark excessively. Maxxie wouldn't take treats while handler remained present. Handler leaves Maxxie alone to decompress. 06/23/25: Staff approach behavior for help removing Maxxie from kennel due to him becoming reactive for leashing. Behavior handler approaches kennel and Maxxie is jumping up onto the kennel door hard barking and bares teeth as handler shows him a toy. Behavior handler distracts with a toy as staff attempts to clip his collar, but as soon as staff's hand comes into view, Maxxie lunges toward it. Behavior handler ends attempts and returns minutes later to remove Maxxie from kennel themselves. They offer squeeze cheese along the kennel floor and drop their lead over Maxxie's head while he is eating. Once out of kennel, Maxxie pulls mildly out to the play yard, displaying a flushed face and moderate pant. He will lean his side into handler's legs and allows petting along his side. Maxxie is returned to kennel safely. 06/22/25 (staff report): Maxxie is reported to growl and hard bark at handler as they attempt to leash him. They are able to quickly clip his collar while holding a toy high above his head, but he does lunge toward their hand during the process. Once out of kennel, he is social with handler and follows a toy back into kennel without issue. 06/17/25 Maxxie is standing on his kennel door with a loose frame as the handler approaches. The handler will unlock his kennel door, kneel down and clip his collar with a drag leash. Maxxie is taken outside for a walk. Maxxie will trot his way outside at a moderate pace displaying a relaxed frame. Maxxie is taken into the play yard where he will explore upon arrival. Maxxie solicits treats by sitting firmly, catching them when tossed and taking them gently when administered. Maxxie and the handler will engage in treat games as well such as "find it" where treats are tossed and Maxxie is cued to seek them out. When exiting the play pen, Maxxie will see a dog with a handler and hard bark once before disengaging to seek attention from the handler. Maxxie is returned to the facility where he enters the building as well as his kennel with no issue.
Summary (6):: 06/10/25 Maxxie is lying down as the handler approaches. He rises with a soft frame, slowly putting his head down for his collar to be clipped. The handler slowly rubs his neck before clipping collar, proceeding to the behavior office. There waiting is a snuffle matt, licki matt and puzzle toy, in which he immediately engages with upon arrival. Maxxie is allowed to roam the room with a drag leash. Maxxie will periodically approach the handler for pets before walking away, lip licking. Maxxie remains soft as he explores the room. He is greeted by another handler as they enter the room, remaining soft in posture and allowing them within his vicinity. Maxxie is returned to kennel after sometime out. He is returned to kennel with no issue. 06/09/25 (PM) Maxxie is approached as he is lying on his karanda bed. The handler will call him over in a soft voice and he makes his way forward. Maxxie allows clipping to his leash and is taken on a walk. Maxxie will exit the facility displaying a neutral frame, appearing aloof as he maintains a steady, relaxed pace. He relieves himself during the walk, commencing as they go for an extended walk. Maxxie will explore shortly in different areas, keeping a steady motion. Maxxie is returned to the facility where he enters the building as well as his kennel with no issue. 06/08/25 Maxxie is sitting in front of his kennel door as the handler approaches. Maxxie rises appearing aloof, displaying a neutral frame. As the handler guides their lead into the kennel, Maxxie slowly backs away. Maxxie will avoid coming forward as long as the loop of the lead is exposed so the handler clips his collar instead. He will allow for the handler to do so when the handler reaches in and lightly pets their neck feeling around for the collar. They exit the facility and Maxxie pulls slightly displaying a neutral frame and wagging tail. He is taken to the pen where he and the handler will work on his patience, having him sit and remain in the sitting position until rewarded periodically. As their time comes to an end, the handler returns Maxxie back to the facility where he will enter the building as well as his kennel with no issue. 06/04/25: Maxxie is standing at the front of his kennel and will hard bark at the handler while pouncing on his tiptoes. Once the kennel door is opened, he runs to the back, head whipping side to side and avoiding the leash. The handler offers treats, which he takes, but continues to evade leashing. Eventually, the handler is able to get the lead over his head, and Maxxie is brought outside for a walk. He is taken to the play yard for a dog-to-dog greeting. At the gate, Maxxie displays a soft frame and offers a nose-to-nose greeting with his playmate, though he appears conflicted and unsure of how to proceed. After walking away, he becomes more loose and offers a shake-off. Maxxie is brought back to his kennel safely with no issues. For more information, see dog-to-dog note.
Summary (7):: 06/03/25: Maxxie greets the handler standing in front of his kennel, with hindlegs stretched on his cot behind him. Maxxie will bark at the handler consistently. The handler tosses treats away from the kennel door to not have Maxxie hover in front of it. The handler will then toss treats to lure Maxxie to the gate. Maxxie will consume the treats but when the handler would prepare the leash Maxxie will retreat and bein barking consistently again. The handler is able to lure Maxxie to the gate but once she sees the leash she will retreat to the back of the kennel. The handler will switch to a slip lead. Maxxie will toggle between approach and retreat, mostly remaining on his cot. The handler will slowly put the lead into the kennel. Maxxie will hard bark through out and duck to evade the leash. Maxxie gives off one soft air snap at the leash in protest. Once the handler is able to lasso Maxxie, he will follow the handler out of the kennel and out of the care center for a walk. On leash his body language will remains neutral as he explores his surroundings. The handler escorts Maxxie to the play yards. Maxxie will spend his time pacing along the yard panting. At one point Maxxie will fixate on the handler, staring at them, He will unconfidently bite the lead. Holding and gnawing at it for a very brief moment. The handler will remain still and Maxxie will let go quickly and go about scenting the yard. He continues panting and eventually seeks exit, hovering by the gate entrance. The handle will escort Maxxie back to his kennel. Upon entering, Maxxie will attempt to halt to avoid going in. The handler uses just enough leash pressure and coaxing and Maxxie will go into his kennel. Maxxie is unleashed and safely secured. 06/02/25 Maxxie is at the front of his kennel lying down with a neutral frame. As the handler approaches, he rises and begins alert barking displaying a soft face, pinned ears and a high stiff tail. The handler will administer spray cheese in which he immediately begins to lick, loosening his posture. Whenever there isn't anymore, Maxxie will continue to bark. As he is licking the cheese, the handler will attempt to slowly guide their lead onto Maxxie. Maxxie is immediately uncomfortable when seeing the lead, backing up initially followed by more barking. To where he is attempting to seek out more cheese, the lead is becoming frustrating to him, and he grows tense. He slowly picks his head up with a square posture, lip curling at the handler. Maxxie begins to hard bark at the handler and bare teeth. The handler will leave him alone to decompress.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend that Maxxie be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Maxxie's reactivity shown while in care, we recommend that he be the only pet in the home along with avoiding all dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner: Maxxie came into the care center as a stray, so his behavioral history in a home environment is unknown. In care Maxxie frequently hard barks, retreats, and evades the leash, occasionally escalating to lip curling, teeth baring, and a soft air snap when handlers attempt to take him out of his kennel. Due to his fearful, reactive kennel behavior and handling sensitivity, Maxxie is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.
