Oreo
Hello, my name is Oreo. My animal id is #227545. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/20/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormOreo is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My favorite pastime is being visually admired! Pet me with your eyes! Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form.Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form A volunteer writes: Oreo knows he can get things right if he can just get another chance. We think that's great and love his optimism, so have offered Oreo some strategies for getting it right the next time around. Except we haven't gotten very far because in a big new place like the shelter, Oreo understandably feels most comfortable doing things his way. Whenever we go to say hello, Oreo swiftly explains that it's not a good time to talk. Remaining in his den, Oreo will sniff the treats we offer but has yet to show interest in any of them. Pets and neck scritches have been met with a definitive no, but ultimately all we want is to help Oreo sort through his plan because we know he can do it. Oreo's looking to find a patient family who will give him the time and space to get things right on his own terms.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Oreo was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/25/25 FB32 Hiding in den lying down with head, ears, and front limbs extended forward, focused on me with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. Sniffs treats offered on scratcher tool, then begins growling when reaching close. When pet on the body, he bites and swats the tool, hisses, then steps back and continues growling. Kept interaction short to reduce stress. 5/31/25 FB47 Oreo was growling but otherwise showed normal behavior and mentation, and appeared healthy.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 07/02/2025 Oreo was in his den when the assessor approached. As the assessor lifted the kennel blocker and opened the door, Oreo shot out of his den and swatted and lunged towards the assessor. Oreo growls, spits and consistently lunges towards the assessor during the interaction. Oreo has also become very bold in his kennel space and now jumps on top of the den during cleaning/feeding, lunging and spitting at whomever comes into his kennel space. 05/27/2025 Oreo was in his den and visibly stressed upon approach, with wide eyes and alert posture. He hissed, swatted at the plexiglass, and growled during attempts to interact. When approached with a scratcher tool through the side portal door, he swatted and withdrew, showing clear signs of discomfort. The assessment was ended early to avoid further stress. Oreo is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
