Buffy
Hello, my name is Buffy. My animal id is #236545. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/12/2025.
Buffy is at risk due to behavior concerns. She arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. Throughout her stay at the care centers, she has allowed all handling. Buffy has been observed to be deteriorating both in a kennel and in a crate. She was reported and observed to be eating away at the base of her crate, even with edible enrichment and toys. When she was moved into a kennel, she redirected her frustration onto the kennel blocker on the inside of her kennel. She was observed to be biting and holing onto the corner of the a kennel blocker, and intensely pulling it back towards her. Buffy has also been observed to continuously pace the side of her kennel while heavily panting and with dilated pupils. She will occasionally redirect onto her plush toys and shake them vigorously. Medically, she has a fractured tooth and is overweight.

I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I need a home where there are no other dogs. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

Summary (6):: 10/9/2025: Buffy is laying down in her kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel to be taken to the yard. She remains soft bodied throughout interaction. In the yard she is put on a drag leash and picks up a tennis ball in her mouth. She continuously shakes it vigorously whilst hyper salivating to the point of drool constantly flying off. She is left completely drenched in drool from the persistent and continuous shaking. She is not interested in trading with treats, higher value treats, another ball, or another plush toy. She continuous to masticate the ball and shake her head intensely every couple seconds. Handler tosses a secondary ball which she chases after but remains displaying the same behavior as she stands over the second ball. Handler offers a flirt pole and it takes her a couple minutes and prompting to disnegage from the ball to transition to the poll. Handler attempts to engage in a game of tug but Buffy play bows and continues vigorously shaking the pole to the point of ripping it out of handlers hands. Handler brings Buffy into the behavior office and attempts trading. She continues with the same behavior. She eventually lets go of the pole and handler uses muscle to pull her away. Another plush toy is tossed and she carries it her kennel where she continues to shake it. 10/8/25: Buffy is off leash in the yard with a staff member. The handler is sitting on the bench, Buffy is standing in front of them, facing them. Buffy has a tennis ball in her mouth that is saturated in saliva. She frequently shakes her head, splashing the saliva onto her back. She is panting while holding the tennis ball in her mouth. 10/2/25 (Late Entry): Buffy is at the front of her kennel with a loose, wiggly body. The handler easily leashes her and brings her out the building. Once outside, Buffy immediately relieves herself. During the street walk, Buffy walks ahead of the handler with tension on the leash. She has no interest in passersby, and she notices other dogs, but does not react to them. The handler clips their leash and attempts to return her, but Buffy does not go in her kennel. The handler tosses treats in the kennel, but she does not go inside. The handler then muscles her into her kennel and removes the leash with ease
Summary (7):: 9/28/25: Buffy is observed to be grabbing to the bottom right corner of the kennel blocker hanging from the inside of her kennel. She will jump up, bite and hold on to it, and attempt to yank it back while biting it. She does not let go until handler tosses some treats into her kennel 9/23/25: Buffy is laying in the back of the crate with a soft and relaxed body, she is easily leashed and taken to the backyard for photos. Once in the backyard Buffy hovers over a toy, she picks the toy up in her mouth and holds onto it, once in a pen she begins shaking, whale eyes, lip curl and tense body language. Handler speaks softly and gives her space. She maintains holding the toy in her mouth. she is brought back to kennel without issue. 9/23/25: Buffy is observed to be resource guarding, biting her crate bars, and ripping/ breaking her crate tray. 9/17/25: Buffy is at the front of the crate with a soft body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed and brought to the backyard. She does a dog-dog interaction (see dog-dog) and is brought into a pen. She paces around the pen moving very slowly. Treats are offered to her and she turns away her head. She walks slowly back towards the entrance and will occasionally turn around back. Handler is able to call her over and she is brought back inside. After Buff is walked back to her crate and is returned without issue. 9/17/25: Buffy is observed to be hard barking at people and dogs that pass her pop up crate. 9/15/25: Buffy is lying down in her pop-up crate when approached. She stands up at the front of the crate with a soft body and wagging tail which can be heard hitting the crates bars. She is easily leashed and taken out of the crate where she walks with a loose leash besides the handler and her body loose. Handler offers her treats but she looks away. Buffy relieves herself a few times and is walked back to the shelter. A dog exits the building nearby and she stares at the dog with a tense body and plants. She is kept away and walks back towards the shelter. Buffy is brought to her crate and she stops outside the crate. Handler tosses a few treats in and Buffy backs away. She enters the crate with some mild leash tension and is returned to her crate without further issue. 9/15/25: Buffy has been reported to be whale eyed, salivating excessively and her mouth is bleeding.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Buffy so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the on leash reactivity and resource guarding we recommend a home with no children. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Buffy has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Buffy should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Buffy has been observed to become tense, tremble, show whale eye, and lip curl while in the possession of a toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Buffy's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. On Leash Reactivity: Buffy has been observed to vocalize and lunge towards a handler before pulling hard towards them after they knocked on the door. Buffy will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other people. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
