Apollo

Hello, my name is Apollo. My animal id is #259476. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 7 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/8/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Apollo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Apollo has shown fearful behavior and difficulty walking in and out of the kennel area, including dodging the leash, balking, refusing to walk, and becoming overwhelmed by barking dogs and sudden sounds. More recently, Apollo has become highly aroused around other dogs, hard barking, pulling, thrashing, rolling, and attempting to back out of the leash. Outside of these moments, Apollo is social and affectionate with handlers, leaning into petting and seeking attention. Medically, Apollo is apparently healthy.

Apollo came into the QUACC after being brought in as a stray. In the care centers, Apollo has been fearful and hesitant to leave his kennel, requiring leash pressure and coaxing to walk. Once out of the kennel and given time to warm up, he becomes more social and will lean into petting and solicit attention from staff. As a result, we recommend Apollo is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Upon intake counselors approached client and Aollo who were outside by the side steps. Apollo was very friendly, outgoing and docile around counselors. He allowed counselors to scan for microchip and collar. Upon bringing Apollo into the building after his owner left, he shut down. Apollo refused to enter the building and began leash thrashing anytime the counselor attempted to guide him in. Counselors attempted to create a line of treats, squeak a toy and belly band. Neither of these attempts worked and Apollo continued to leash thrash. He did not pancake, growl or hard bark at any time. Counselors proceeded to call Canine Behavior where they were then successfully able to guide Apollo in after walking around to the side entrance of the building. Apollo still continued to leash thrash as Canine Behavior brought him inside. Apollo was then placed into his kennel. No further handling was done. Due to the leash thrashing Apollo was placed as "Behavior Walks" and a black dot was placed on his kennel card.

Summary:: Apollo arrived as an owner surrender, and is noted to be Friendly and outgoing with other dogs. 8/13/26: Apollo greets a novel female dog through a barrier. Apollo initially approaches with a neutral body while panting heavily. He chooses to disengage but later reapproaches with increased arousal, hard barking toward the novel female and having difficulty settling even when moved away. The novel female remains loose and wiggly throughout, repeatedly offering play bows and attempting to solicit interaction. Due to Apollo's increasing arousal and difficulty regulating, the interaction is ended.

Summary (6):: 08/19/26: Apollo is standing at the front of kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls moderately to the Canine Behavior Office. Apollo is kept on leash and will exuberantly approach a second handler, leaning into petting but becomes increasingly aroused, panting heavily with a flushed face and dilated eyes. Apollo does not take treats and becomes increasingly reactive to the sounds of dogs barking outside of the room. He begins barking and pulling towards the dogs and when the handler attempts to guide him away without any leash pressure, he begins to thrash, roll, and attempt to back out of lead while vocalizing. Handler quickly guides Apollo back to kennel. 08/14/26: Apollo was at the back of his kennel on approach. He is coaxed to the front with a treat throw, and is leashed with a treat lure. He is taken into the training room and walks around with a loose body, leaning into several handlers soliciting attention. He was not receptive to treats or food however was interested in toys. His kennel return was unremarkable. 8/13/26: Apollo is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He backs away as the handler attempts to leash him. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats, but he does not eat them. He is then taken outside to the play yard for playgroup. In the yard, he greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body and begins to become aroused and would hard bark at the dog. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He is able to be taken away and is then taken back to his kennel with no issues. 8/13/26: Apollo is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be quickly leashed and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he has a neutral body frame as he sniffs around. He would constantly stop behind the handler when sudden sounds what happen. He is comfortable approaching the handler when they bend down and he would lean in to receive pets. He has no interest in treats. When returning back to the building, he begins to thrash on the leash when reaching the entrance gate. After a moment, he is able to be coaxed forward and is then taken back to his kennel with no further issues.

Summary (7):: 08/12/26 (Trainer Note): Apollo is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He dodges the leash on every attempt, bouncing back and forth from the front of kennel to the back with a loose body. Handler is able to lasso him and remove him from kennel. Before exiting the room Apollo balks and attempts to retreat back to kennel. Handler moves with him and turns around in the room, re-attempting to walk out the room, Apollo follows. Apollo is taken to the canine behavior office where he is social with handlers, leaning in for pets. He is returned to kennel without issue. 8/10/26: Apollo is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He would back away as the handler unlocks the door and would dodge the leash as it got closer to him. He is able to be leashed when he attempts to stick his head out of the kennel door gap. He then baulks to the ground when the handler opens the door for him to walk out. Due to the other dogs in kennels barking, he remains laying down and refuses to step out of the kennel. A second handler is able to help coax him forward. Once he steps out of kennel, he is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he has a neutral body frame as he walks ahead of the handler to sniff around. He has no reactions to dogs or people that would pass by. On the way back to the building, he would constantly stop walking behind the handler and is able to be coaxed forward when the handler squeaks a squeaker. He is then able to enter the building and he returns back to his kennel with no issues. 08/09/26: Apollo is lying at the front of kennel as handler approaches. He is hesitant of leashing and will not take treats but allows handler to slowly drop the leash over his head. Handler opens the door wide and moves to the side to give plenty of space for Apollo to exit. He does not move even with coaxing. Handler uses moderate leash pressure to guide him out of kennel and once in the hall he begins to walk on his own. Apollo is brought to the Canine Behavior Office where he begins to loosen and will lean into petting and nudge handler to solicit contact. He is easily collared. After his session, Apollo is returned to kennel safely. 08/08/26: Canine Behavior assistance is requested for Apollo in the front parking lot. When handlers arrive, Apollo is balking at the front of the building with a tucked tail and will not come forward towards the lobby door. Handler takes the leash and leads Apollo out into the parking lot and around to the side entrance. Apollo will baulk intermittently and will not come forward for treats, squeakers, or coaxing. Handler uses moderate directional leash pressure to guide Apollo into the building. Once inside, Apollo walks with only mild coaxing needed. He enters kennel safely.
