Hawk
Hello, my name is Hawk. My animal id is #211796. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/22/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too active.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormHawk is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Hawk has a multiple bite history, he was noted to get aroused during play and applied intense pressure. He also recently got into an altercation with the resident dog. Hawk is also on leash reactive, he will lunge towards small animals and scooters. With handlers Hawk is observed to be receptive to treats. Medically Hawk is apparently healthy.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form.Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Hawk is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Hawk was returned to the Care Centers following a bite incident between him and the resident dog. He has been observed to have stranger danger and a low threshold for arousal, and when he becomes mouthy, he applies intense pressure. At the Care Centers, Hawk allows staff to handle him and takes treats without issue. His previous adopter described him as an affectionate dog who loves car rides and baths. Hawk will require an adult foster through a New Hope Partner who has experience working with behavioral issues. What my friends at ACC say about me: I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
Spay/Neuter Status: Neutered
Basic Information:: Hawk is a 1 yr old neutered make LMB. He is being surrendered due to not being a good fit with resident dog.
Previously lived with:: 2 adults, 1 LMB, 2 bunnies
How is this dog around strangers?: Noted to be shy and prefer contact on own terms. He has met some of my friends and is totally fine, but he needs to approach first, and the. He can be friendly and outgoing With strangers—if they are confident, he will approach and be fine. If they are not he may bark
How is this dog around children?: Has not lived with children but visited a home where a 12 yr old lives and noted to be friendly/playful.
How is this dog around other dogs?: He does desire to be around other dogs annd wants to meet everyone. He has played on leash with dogs in my neighborhood. He craves other dogs (but my dog is 6 and does not like his energy-so they do not get along well) He also wants to be the dominant one /leader, so best playmates would be similar energy , submissive pups. He plays hard, but was fine with small dogs as well. A dog trainer I worked with also said he really craves and should be introduced to others maybe in organized obedience classes, or with an experienced dog play group at a training center. Just until you can build trust in him.
How is this dog around cats?: lived with rabbits- he has looked at them on lead and sniffed litter boxes as well as sniffed them in a carrier. He will just walk away. Once he understands and responds/learns “leave it” and “gentle” would I go any further.
Resource guarding:: I answered none of the above, but it was a toy with other dog which caused a fight. My attention is second. If one gets it the other wants it. If other dog sits next to me, Hawk has to get closer to me or on top of me, so it ends up that everyone gets off and no one gets my attention at that time.
Bite history:: Previous bite to a person: No Did the bite break skin: Not reported Date of last bite: Previous bite to another animal: Yes Did the other animal need vet care: Yes Date of last bite to an animal: 1/2/2025 Bitten by another animal: Yes Did this dog need vet care: No Date of last bite by another animal: 1/2/2025 Additional info: Incident happened between Hawk and other dog in home over a toy . Happened quickly as both picked up same toy which resulted in maybe a 6 sec growling tug of war I was unable to stop before they went after each other. I separated both and Blazer limped away to living room and I restrained Hawk and put in crate. There was no aggression afterwards (meaning neither was fixated on each other after Incident and even if Hawk in crate and Blazer loose, neither showed any reaction towards each other - all calm. But both not let loose together yet since Blazer is injured.; Bite History Survey Answers: Victim: A familiar dog Additional info: Blazer, medium, 45 pounds. Although similar weight and height- Hawk is just beefier and way stronger. Was this the first bite: Yes Previous bite before this: How many times the dog has bitten in the past: This is the only bite Bite severity: No bleeding, pocket puncture wound in armpit and front right leg of other dog. 1 stitch needed as put drain in wound in case Medical attention needed: Yes Medical attention type: Stitches were required Warning signs prior to the bite: "Growled, hard barked, and/or snarled" What happened before/during the bite: Dogs in kitchen while I was doing dishes. They both went to pick up a rope toy that resulted in a tug of war with growling by each dog - I went to get toy away and they lunged at each other (never any aggression towards myself)- I somehow was able to separate. Once separated, I put Hawk in his kennel and other dog in bedroom. Other dog was limping, I saw no blood but a puncture wound on front leg, put ointment on and left both to chill for a couple hours separated (I was working at home on phones). When checked on Blazer, his leg was swollen, so took him right away to vet where they saw the puncture wound in armpit. Had to wait until next morning to examine closer as my dog needed to be sedated and it was closing time at vet. Got antibiotic and anti inflammatory and went back next morning. Type of bite: Bite and released immediately
Housetrained:: Yes
Energy level/descriptors:: medium
Other Notes:: Noted medium, for energy level but at first it was high (due to high anxiety), but it can be low as he has adjusted and really just wants to be near owner at all times Goes potty on: "Outside on walks (grass, cement, dirt, etc.)" Accident frequency: Few times a week Additional info: Has had accidents with both pee and poop in beginning. Seems unable to hold urine for long periods, so gets walked 4x daily. when he needs to go out if before or after his scheduled walks (will not leave me alone with continual licking and nibbling on arm). In beginning had some poop accidents as he had diarrhea when first adopted. Is now on a great diet which changed things around. Behavior concerns: Mouthy/Takes treats rough Noted Mouthy/takes treats rough —- he is gentle with treats, he speaks with his mouth, Which means, if he starts to get too aroused he will mouth, if he doesn’t want you to grab his collar he mouths, when he wants to go out he licks and mouths at your hands. When first bringing home he was so mouthy as he didn’t trust us. Better now, but think he will be starting over with a new home - but it shouldn’t be as bad as it was. Reacts to on walks: "Small animals (squirrels, birds, rats, etc.)" Scooters, motorcycles. he is fearful when it’s very windy - when the wind is howling and leaves are blowing about. More fearful tendencies at night, meaning he can get hyper vigilant at staring down the street and such. Reaction type: Lunging Additional info: Not reported How this dog reacts when... - Held/restrained: Fearful - Disturbed while resting/sleeping: Isn't bothered - Startled: Fearful - Pushed/pulled off furniture: Grab person hand- Understands OFF - Paws are touched: Isn't bothered - Collar grabbed/touched: Fearful -Leash answered hard pulling, which he can do, but I am working on that and he is better. I just stop when the leash go taught, and then when he finally is in with me or circles back to me I say “yes” and treat (I am treating for his division to come back to me. In the beginning it was more of a leash correction, but I think he has some neck or spinal tension that is uncomfortable so different approach rewarding his decisions as opposed to forced behavior, as that wasn’t getting me nowhere. With all dogs, a slack leash is better, except in situations where I may need to keep him close. —-How does he react during walks? I put reacts to small animals, but he is a little better as he looks towards me 60 percent of time so I can say yes and treat him instead of him pulling towards.
Has this dog ever had any medical issues?: No
Medical Notes: Medical info: Not reported Allergies: Unsure Allergy info: Not reported Veterinarian: None yet Last vet check: 11/13/2024
For a New Family to Know: Hawk is Social/Affectionate, Very active & Playful, Lazy/Couch potato "Hawk is by far the absolute best snuggler of any dog I have ever had! He loves the couch and probably should not go to home where he would not be allowed on a couch- it is that important to him. he will be mouthy at first if you try to urge him off by grabbing for his collar, but using your words “OFF” proved to be best. Hawk took weeks to calm his anxiousness - he was sooo wound up. Get him to trust you first by not asking a lot of him in the beginning. A calm approach is best as he gets overexcited easily. Because of this, he would do best if someone had some outdoor space to expend his puppy energy (he is just over a year, but still very much a puppy)He spent most of his time where people are. Hawk Loves bath time/water and allows his feet/paws to be cleaned after walks Walks on slip lead leash (no harness) rating: 4 - Hard pulling. He does have accidents if you don’t understand his cues.He usually gets 4 walks per day (sometimes 5)am, after breakfast, late afternoon, after dinner and sometimes midnight.When he needs to go out he will nibble on your hands and try to lick and nibble your face. You really have to smile and be happy when you walk him- calm happy with praise. Being serious and concentrating on training gets him reactive. Being Calm and letting him know when he does good is best. Does ell in an XL wire crate for 5 hours. Advise:"He is not a destroyer of shoes, furniture, etc……except for his chew toys, as well as winter hats and gloves that may be laying about. I think they seem like destuffed toys. He needs to work on basic commands still, like leave it and stay. He is not fond of “down” (which means lay down) and seems to still only do if holding a treat. Please be aware that “Off” and “Down” are 2 separate commands. Off, is for getting off the couch or off a person, and again, down is for laying down, so that he can relax. He does kennel up for me fine, but others need to throw a treat in his crate. He never gets riled up in his crate unless he needs to go out. He is great in a crate. Hawk Loves car rides. His favorite activities/toys/food/snacks: Loves chew toys (never give rawhides or real bones)- he is not one that fetches though. Loves ALL fresh veggies & fruits -especially broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, apples, bananas. Gets diarrhea from fresh chicken and kibble, but does great on The Framers Dog fresh food, Spot & Tango dehydrated unkibble food, as well as meals of just cut up veggies and fruit. (Squash, cucumber, blueberries, spinach, broccoli, oats, peanut butter, sunflower seeds).

Summary (6):: 1/23/25: Hawk is at the center of his kennel laying down as handler approaches. He is leashed without issue and taken on a walk to the street. During his walk, Hawk will stop frequently to sniff and use the bathroom. He doesn't react to people or dogs he sees during his walk and is brought to the behavior office shortly after returning to the shelter. During his assessment he approaches handlers and sits in front of them while staring intently at them, waiting for treats. He tolerates petting and collaring and begins barking when his collar is adjusted. He is brought back to kennel and returned without issue. Previous stay at ACC: 11/4/24: When handler walked in front of Man-Man's kennel Hawk FKA Man-Man was laying in back. After the handler was standing in from of the kennel for a little while Man-Man charged to the front of the kennel, jumped up on the kennel door and began barking. They continued barking as the handler walked out of sight. 10/26/24: While walking Man-Man on the street, he is loose bodied and social. He turns to handler and checks in frequently. He sits for treats and when not given fast enough he will jump up and mouth handlers hand.
Summary (7):: 10/25/2024: Man-Man is jumping at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body. He pulls hard out of the room and is taken to the street where he continues to pull hard. When spotting a dog across the street, he stops with a tense, pointed body and hard stares. The handler uses their squeaker and tosses treats on the ground which he takes. Man-Man periodically would turn to stare and pull towards the other dog but is able to be redirected with a squeaker and treats every time. Once the dog is out of sight, he sniffs around and relieves himself. Man-Man is brought back to the building and is returned to kennel with no issue. 10/15/24: Man-Man is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body and a wagging tail. He is easily leashed and pulls very hard out of the room. He is taken to the street where he continues to pull very hard. He relieves himself and continues walking. He suddenly stops and stares at some people across the street. He is called over and he continues to walk pulling hard. Handler will toss treats to him at times and he takes. Upon return to the shelter, his kennel is still being cleaned, Handler takes Man-Man to the behavior office where he begins to seek attention from the handler, his body wiggly and his tail wagging. Handler sits on the couch and he jumps on to the handler in a social manner sniffing them. He then jumps down and wanders around the office sniffing the furniture. He is then returned to his kennel without issue. 10/10/24: Man-Man is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins barking at handler but is offered a treat and proceeds to stand on his hind legs and lean on the kennel door. He allows leashing without issue and pulls hard out the room, he is taken to the street for his walk. Once outside Man-Man continues pulling hard and stops frequently and for long periods of time to smell different spots. Man-Man walks past people without issue but is cautious when he sees kids running and screaming past him, he slightly cowers and his ears pin back with his tail tucked. He is brought back into the building for an assessment in the behavior office. Once inside he excitedly wags his tail and accepts treats, he is hesitant to be collared but tolerates it. He also tolerates petting but barks when someone begins knocking on the door, when handler enters the room and approaches him, he approaches and sniffs handler before disengaging. Man-Man is re-leashed and returned to kennel without issue.
Date of intake:: 1/22/2025
Summary:: Barking at handler, tense body
Date of initial:: 1/22/2025
Summary:: Tense, but very focused on treat foods offered.
ENERGY LEVEL:: Hawk is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to bite history we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human),Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: has accidents a few times a week. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Hawk has been noted to escalate to biting when in the possession of a toy. He should learn to trade game using positive reinforcement. Please see the handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful Defensive: Hawk has been observed to hard bark and growl at handlers. Hawk previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl at strangers. It is also stated that Hawk will attempt to bite when pushed/pulled off furniture. It is important to move slowly with Hawk, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression/Bite history (human)/Bite history (dog): Hawk was noted to get aroused during play and applied intense pressure. He recently got into an altercation with the resident dog, and grazed the adopter after a verbal correction. Please see the handout on Bite History. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Reacts to on walks: "Small animals (squirrels, birds, rats, etc.)" Scooters, motorcycles by lunging. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach him to check in when on walks. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash Pulling: Hawk's previous owner states that he will pull very hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Basic manners/poor impulse control/Low threshold for arousal: Hawk was noted to get easily aroused during play and become mouthy. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach him impulse control. Please see the handouts on Basic manners/poor impulse control and Low threshold for arousal.
