Animal Profile

Leap Frog

Hello, my name is Leap Frog. My animal id is #259785. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 8/27/2026.

Leap Frog is at risk due to behavioral reasons. In his prior home, Leap Frog was observed to lunge at the child in the home and was nipping the adopter's partner. Leap Frog would also hard bark, growl, lunge, snap at familiar and unfamiliar dogs. While in care, Leap Frog has also been observed to be dog reactive. Noted to fixate and hard stare at other dogs with a tense body and raised hackles. In kennel, Leap Frog will snap at the neighboring dogs. With handlers, Leap Frog allows contact and is receptive to treats. He is receptive to cues such as "sit" and "paw." Medically, Leap Frog is apparently healthy.

I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I need a home where there are no other dogs. I visited Central Park and had a picnic! Here is my report card from my boroughbreakers: 3 words to describe Leap Frog are... Friendly, strong, goofy. Very sweet, friendly, and affectionate with people. Highly treat-motivated and responds enthusiastically to rewards. Very alert to surroundings; crosses streets quickly and efficiently. Highly reactive to other dogs regardless of their behavior. Does not respond to treats during these times. Great street manners and ignores street trash!

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Leap Frog has been observed to jump up on handlers with a loose body. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: In the prior home leap frog is noted to nip at the owners spouse. Continued training should focus on reinforcing appropriate interactions, improving impulse control, and encouraging alternative behaviors. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: In the prior home Leap frog is noted to lunge at the 3-year-old in the home and was reported to lunge at the small dog in the home and hard bark at the dog. Continued management should focus on preventing situations that may lead to escalation, providing structured introductions, and helping Leap Frog build confidence through positive experiences. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: In the prior home, Leap Frog is noted with Familiar dogs: hard barks/growls, lunges, and snaps,Unfamiliar dogs: hard barks/growls, lunges, and snaps,Unfamiliar dogs - off leash: no experiences.Training should focus on creating distance from triggers, reinforcing calm engagement with the handler, and building positive associations with other dogs at a comfortable distance. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Leap frog is noted in the prior home to hard pull while on the leash. Continued leash-training efforts should focus on reinforcing loose-leash walking, encouraging attention to the handler, and rewarding calm walking behavior. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling.
