Chillton
Hello, my name is Chillton . My animal id is #216420. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/10/2024.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormChillton is on the at-risk list for behavioral and medical concerns. Chillton has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and remains highly stressed. He is becoming difficult to remove from the kennel and walk due to the intensity of his kennel fighting. Chillton digs at the kennel door, but once leashed he immediately rushes towards the kennel, lunging and hard barking at each. He repeats these behaviors when being returned to his kennel. Once back inside, he begins heavy panting, licking the kennel walls, with a flushed face and dilated eyes. Medically, Chillton has been diagnosed with Parvovirus and has started treatment. He will need further medical care than we are able to provide at ACC. Chillton also has conjunctivitis, dental disease, and dermatitis.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Chillton was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior in a home environment is unknown. Chillton has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has remained highly anxious while in care. Chillton displayed a concerning level of reactivity to other dogs in and out of the kennel. When removed from his kennel, Chillton lunges, and hard barks at the other kennels. Once he can be returned to his kennel Chillton begins licking the kennel walls even with attempts to redirect him with high value- treats or toys. Due to the concerning behaviors in care, we recommend for Chillton to be placed in an adult-only home where he can be the only dog through a New Hope rescue partner.

Summary:: Due to Chillton entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded 12/13/24: When off leash at the Care Center Chillton is introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate Chillton approaches with a stiff frame, hard pulling. Chillton will scent the greeter female before hard barking consistently. The handler guide Chillton away from the gate and out of the play yards but he continues to fixate on the greeter female until she is out of his site. Due to Chillton's reactivity a face to face greet was not conducted.
Summary (7):: 12/15/24 (observation): As staff is returning Chillton to kennel, he is highly aroused, flushed face, dilated eyes, heavy panting. He pulls hard toward each kennel on the way back to his and has to be bunny hopped to keep him from kennel fighting. Handler keeps him close to the wall but he continuously pulls and jumps in the direction of the kennels and his open mouth makes contact with handler's leg multiple times as he is ushered back to kennel. He did not appear to be redirecting onto handler as there is no attempt to bite at or on handler, but his open mouth touches handler's leg as he is trying to push past them to get to other kennels. Chillton is ushered into kennel and immediately shoves his way back out before the door can be closed completely. On second attempt, handler muscles him back into kennel. Chillton immediately runs to the front corner of kennel and begins incessantly licking the wall. Handlers try to redirect him in order to remove the lead but he shows no interest in high value treats (ham) or squeakies. After a minute, handler is able to remove their lead, but he continues to lick the corner of the kennel for several minutes after. Chillton's kennel is covered with a large sheet before handlers exit the room. 12/13/24: Chillton is at the front of his kennel digging at the kennel door when approched. Chillton remains loose/wiggly and is a bit difficult to leash due to his incessant digging. Chillton is coaxed with treats into the leash and when removed immediately rushes the kennel next to him, lunging and hard barking at the other dog and continues to kennel fight with each kennel, having to be stiff armed the entire way. Chillton goes out to the yard for a dog-dog interaction (See DOG-DOG Summary for more details_ and is brought back into his kennel where he kennel fights again with every kennel again. Chillton tries to pull extremely hard to the kennel next to him to kennel fight and has to be stiffed armed into kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Chillton's Potential challenges we recommended he is placed in a adult only home at this time. Single-pet home/recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning level of reactivity displayed in care and the potential to redirect, we recommend for Chillton to be the only dog in the home and not attend dog parks at this time. Place with A New Hope Partner: Due to the concerns displayed in care, we recommend for Chillton to be placed with a New Hope Partner.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- Chillton is reported to jump up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve his impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Social hyperarousal- Snowbert often becomes overly excited when interacting Anxiety- Chillton began to display heavy panting,pacing and was unable to settle during his assessment. Managing him anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized Strength/leash pulling- chillton pulls hard on the leash, to the point of coughing and honking. This behavior highlights his strength and the need for training to teach his to walk calmly on a leash. Using tools like a no-pull harness and consistent leash training can help manage his pulling behavior. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- Chillton will bark on the lead when on walk toward dogs and people, he is also reported to kennel fight when seeing other dogs.
