Indiana Blue
Hello, my name is Indiana Blue. My animal id is #241043. I am a desexed male brown brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 9 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/8/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormIndiana Blue is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Indiana Blue has shown high arousal in his kennel, including jumping and barking at the kennel door, and has needed treats or toys to help with leashing. Indiana Blue is also reported to leash bite intensely in his kennel needing toys and treats to remove him from kennel. Outside of his kennel, Indiana Blue generally walks with a neutral body, approaches handlers for treats, and has been able to pass dogs and people without reacting. Medically, Indiana Blue is underweight, has distal limb laxity, a tear to tip of tongue and holding small portion out of mouth and mild pododermatitis.

In the care centers, Indiana Blue has displayed persistent leash biting, which can be difficult to redirect with treats, toys, or other distractions while he is in his kennel. He has otherwise been social and affectionate with staff, often leaning into contact and soliciting attention. As a result, we recommend Indiana Blue is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Summary:: Indiana Blue arrived at the care centers as a stray, so his behavior with other dogs is unknown. 8/14/26: Indiana Blue greets a novel female dog through a barrier. Indiana Blue approaches the gate displaying a neutral body and wagging tail. After briefly greeting, both dogs independently choose to disengage and walk away. Indiana Blue explores the yard and does not reapproach the barrier for the remainder of the interaction. 11/12/25: Indiana Blue greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and soft wagging tail. He disengages and does not reapproach. Off leash, he remains soft, greets the other dog and moves away when the other dog does not seem interested in engaging further.
Summary (7):: 8/20/26: Indiana Blue is jumping and barking at his kennel door as handler approaches. He continues to jump and bark at the door as the handler unlocks it and would quickly take treats from the handler's hand as they get their leash over his head. Once leashed, he is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he walks ahead of the handler with a neutral body on the way to the yard. In the yard, he is comfortable approaching the handler for treats. He would approach the pool full of water and drink water from it. He would stare at dogs and people that would pass by on the sidewalk. He no longer has interest in treats, and would spit them out after taking them from the handler's hand. He is then taken back to his kennel with no issues. 8/14/26: Indiana Blue is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with a lot of treats. He is then taken to the play yard for play group. In the yard, he greets the other dog at the gate with a neutral body and then disengages and begins to sniff around the yard. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 8/14/26: Indiana Blue is observed to leash bite intensely in his kennel, but was then helped by a second staff member who brought a toy and leashed him with the toy as he was leash biting 8/13/26: Indiana Blue is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with a toy as he tugs on it. When exiting the kennel, he then drops the toy and is comfortable chasing after it when the handler re-tosses it for him. He then drops the toy again when exiting the building and is able to continue the walk without it. On the walk, he would walk ahead of the handler with a neutral body and has no reactions to dogs or people nearby. He is comfortable approaching the handler to receive treats. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 8/13/26: Indiana Blue was at front of kennel with a neutral body where he was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. While walking he maintained a neutral body and walked with a slack leash. After his walk he was returned to kennel with no issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Indiana Blue so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Indiana Blue's behavior in the care center, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment and during his stay in care, the behavior department recommends that Indiana Blue be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Choco Bean to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing him to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Choco Bean presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Separation anxiety,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manner: Indiana Blue has been observed to jump up on handlers with and without an open mouth. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling/touch sensitivity: Indiana Blues was reported to snap when his leg was touched. Positive reinforcement should be to teach him to feel comfortable with novel handling. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity Separation Anxiety: Indiana Blues is reported to vocalize when he is left alone. Separation anxiety can be worked on, though it takes patience and commitment. Indiana Blues should be left with engaging, durable toys and chews when left alone to keep him occupied. Arrivals and departures should be low-key to keep Indiana Blues from becoming too excited. If the behaviors are severe, the help of a certified behavior modification trainer may be needed. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Indiana Blues. Leash-biting/Low threshold for arousal: Indiana Blue is quick to grab the leash in his mouth. We recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement and force-free training are advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Arousal.:
