Nines
Hello, my name is Nines. My animal id is #251680. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/10/2026.
Nines is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Nines arrived at the Care Center as a stray. Upon arrival Nines was initially fearful but warmed up to staff quickly. During her most recent handling assessment she was noted to be highly social and accept all contact. Unfortunately, Nines has struggled with a decreasing threshold for arousal. In a recent interaction Nines was noted to jump up and persistently tug on a staff member's sleeve and leash; she was difficult to redirect even with use of a pet corrector. When not over-threshold, Nines remains social with staff, solicits contact, and is highly treat receptive. Medically, Nines is noted to have Dental Disease but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Nines arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. While in care, Nines has been observed to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to mouth handlers with moderate to hard pressure, jump at them persistently, and leash bite. Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. A Volunteer Wrote: We're all smitten with this girl, and for so many good reasons! She's joy on four legs; exuberant, snuggly, and paying no attention to the dogs around her when she can devote all her attention to YOU! If you have two hands with which to pet her and a pocket full of treats, it's safe to bet you will be Nines' most favorite person ever. Please stop the competition between volunteers over which one of us she'll pick and proclaim yourself the winner--you will earn the world title by opening your home to this baby! Energetic, full of beans. She's a happy, exuberant leash walker, a bit jumpy and zig zaggy. Needs a bit of training there. Affectionate, loves treats which she'll readily sit for, but she can be mouthy. So use paper treat- giving technique: flat hand or on the ground. Big girl energy into a small body so make sure you're ready for it. Couch Potatoes need not apply. My #BoroughBreak Buddy writes: Nines is the absolute best girl! She is so loving and friendly and pays absolutely no attention to other dogs around her! She is well-behaved and loves getting scratches! It was an absolute joy to spend the day with her and she will make a family so happy!

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Nines so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the low threshold for arousal we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Arousal/ Mouthiness/Leash Biting: Nines has been observed to quickly become over aroused with handlers. Moted to mouth them with moderate to hard pressure, jump at the handler persistently, and then begin leash biting. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Nines to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
