Animal Profile

Robert

Hello, my name is Robert. My animal id is #191779. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 11 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/14/2024.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Robert is currently at risk due to behavioral reasons. Robert has been leash biting intensely, biting through the leash when handlers attempt to remove him from kennel. Once he is out of kennel, Robert is soft and social, allowing petting and soliciting attention. Medically, Robert is apparently healthy.

Pre-Screener Form Robert is currently at risk due to behavioral reasons. Robert has been leash biting intensely, biting through the leash when handlers attempt to remove him from kennel. Once he is out of kennel, Robert is soft and social, allowing petting and soliciting attention. Medically, Robert is apparently healthy. Robert arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Robert has been observed to jump up and bite the leash. On one occasion Robert was leash biting and chewed through the handlers leash. During his previous stay in the care center Robert was observed to jump up on handlers. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. Please check here for updated adoption hours.

Summary:: 1/21/24: Gate Greeting- Approached helper dog with loose wiggly body

Summary (6):: 12/21/24: Robert is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping and barking at handler intensely as handler unlocks kennel. He is distracted with a large spoon covered in peanut butter which he begins to gnaw at as handler quickly throws the leash over his head. He pulls towards the other dogs while exiting the room but settles as soon as he exits the room. He is brought to the street for his walk and uses the bathroom almost as soon as he reaches outside. While walking he pulls moderately and attempts to turn and head back to the shelter after using the bathroom. He walks with handler for a bit more and passes people on the street without issue before being brought back. Upon returning he again pulls towards other dogs moderately but is returned without issue.

Summary (7):: 12/20/24: Robert is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He jumps up at his kennel door and begins barking as handler unlocks kennel. A large spoon with peanut butter on the end is used to distract Robert while handler leashes him, however he refocuses on the leash and begins biting it. Handler tosses treats causing him to let go, handler removes leash and closes his kennel briefly to reset. He is successfully distracted and leashed this time and exits kennel quickly. Robert is taken to the street for his walk, while outside he does not react to people or dogs. He walks alongside handler and uses the bathroom while outside, Robert also accepts treats from handler softly while waiting at crosswalks. Robert is brought back inside and is successfully clipped before returning to kennel. 12/16/24: Robert is standing on his hind legs at the front of kennel, high pitched barking, heavily panting, and jumping as handler as approaches. He is focused on the leash before it even goes in the kennel. Handler holds out toy as a lure and is able to leash him, he still briefly leash bit and pulled the leash in, but was redirected onto the squeaking toy. Handler tossed toy in front of his kennel, and as Robert jumped out, he immediately grabbed in and walked out the room with it in his mouth. He dropped it and did not leash bite for his walk on the street. He stayed by handler side for the majority of the walk with a soft body, regularly looking for his reward. He did not react to people on the street, but would pull very hard and let out a high pitched scream when passing other dogs. A squeaker, treats, and muscle had to be used to redirect him. He was brought to the behavior room for an assessment where he remained soft bodied with a relaxed tail wag. Accepting treats and tolerating handling. When returning him to the kennel, he continued pulling hard and shrieking as he passed by other dogs. When about to hop into his kennel, he jerked back very hard, slamming his back on the wall, began to briefly thrash as well. Handler had to use muscle to secure him in kennel, as the leash was being removed, he began to leash bite and handler tossed a toy in, he disengaged with the rope and he immediately began to shred. 12/15/24: ACS report that Robert will jump up and bite the leash, chewing threw their leash. Previous stay at ACC: 1/21/24: Robert is at the front of the kennel jumping up and down when handler approaches their kennel. He is leashed using treats and is taken out of kennel. He is taken outside for a street walk where he walks nicely alongside handler, gazing up at them. When handler speaks to them in a soft tone, he jumps on them socially, allowing petting. He is then returned to his kennel where he needs to be lifted in.

Date of intake:: 12/14/2024

Summary:: Soft body, tail wagging and allowed all handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Robert so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to leash biting and on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Robert has been observed to jump up on handles in a social manner. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Leash Biting: Robert has been observed to jump up and bite the leash while on walks. This behavior is able to redirected using a toy. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
