What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy!

Summary (4):: 2/19/2025 (Trainer Note): Alexi is jumping up and down at the front of kennel with a loose body and barking as handler approaches. Handler attempts to leash but she begins leash biting. Handler tosses treats and she lets go of the leash. Handler uses large treat as a lure and she is able to leash. As Alexi is removed from her kennel she immediately intensely kennel fights and handler has to straight arm her. In the yard Alexi intermittently leash bites, but is usually redirectable with treats. Handler begins to play different pattern games as she is highly food motivated. She maintains a loose body throughout interaction, occasionally jumping up on handler and taking the treats hard. Towards the end of the walk, she begins to leash bite and escalate towards handlers hand. Handler tosses scatter of treats on her head which redirects her, but she continues to leash bite until the front of the room. Returning to kennel Alexi intensely kennel fought.

Summary (5):: 2/16/25: An ACS handler reports that Alexi was leash biting and began jumping and was biting their jacket sleeve while coming out of kennel. There was no issues while on the walk outside and when returning back to kennel. 2/16/25: Alexi is observed to jump up and bite and hold the handlers shirt. This behavior is not able to be redirected and the handler has to straight arm her to get her off. Alexi continues to jump up and bite the leash, this behavior is not easily redirectable using treats.

Summary (6):: 2/15/25: Alexi was at the front of the kennel. She was easily leashed with spray cheese as a lure. She was taken out into the driveway where she began jumping high and leash biting. She was redirected with treats and walked around the driveway. Alexi is then taken to the street where she starts leash biting at a higher intensity and begins tugging the leash and growling. Treats were used to redirect her but she returned to leash biting when handler stopped feeding her treats. She spots a toy in the street and begins picking it up and running around with it. She then drops the toy and begins leash biting again. Handler returns to the driveway where Alexi is easily redirected with treats. After sometime, Alexi is returned to her kennel with no issue. 2/13/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Alexi will leash bite. 2/7/25: It was reported that Alexi will show teeth towards the other dogs as she passes their kennels. 2/3/25- Alexi was at the front of her pop up crate with a loose and wiggly body, she is easily leashed. When exiting she has a slight pull towards passing another pop up crate next to hers. Handler kept her on a short leash and exited the room. She was taken for a street walk. She lightly leash bites and handler presents a treat, she takes it gently from their hand. She will again grab the leash and walk with it in her mouth. When she starts to tug, handler holds a treat and she lets go of the leash. Once around the block she doesn't engage with the leash, handler has her check in and reward. She has no reaction to people passing her. When she sees a group of small dogs, Alexi fixates on them with a neutral body and high tail with no vocalization. Handler has to tug her away to keep her moving and presents a treat which she stays focused on. She allows handler to pet her head, chin, neck and back. She is easily clipped and returned to her pop up without issue. 1/27/25: Alexi has a loose wiggly body and is able to be leashed with ease and taken downstairs for a walk. On the walk, she pulled the entire time and would slow down to receive treats. She would get distracted by dogs passing by and would stare and try to pull harder. She pulled on the way back to her kennel and entered with no issues. 1/19/25: It was reported on the behavior board that Alexi was leash biting.

Summary (7):: 1/14/25: During a walk on the street, Alexi has attempted to lunge at a child. The handler moved Alexi so they could stand to the side to allow a passerby and their child to walk past. As the child walked past, Alexi made an attempt to lunge at the child but didn’t make contact, as she was on a leash harness and the handler had her on a short leash. 12/14/24: (late entry): Alexi was reported to become mouthy and leash bite when trying to releash her out in the yard when she was on a drag leash. K9 behavior placed a keep on leash sign. 12/4/24: Alexi FKA Diva is sitting at the front of the pop up crate and wags her tail as handler speaks to her and opens the crates door. She is leashed using a treat as a lure. She is walked on the street where she pulls hard while exploring, sniffing spot to spot. When a dog passes by, she pulls hard towards them but once she gets to the end of the short leash she watches as they pass. She approaches handlers in the behavior room with a loose and wiggly body. AFter the handling assessment and off leash, she will get brief zoomies then begins to bite at the leash. She is not easily distracted by toys or treats. The leash is dropped and she begins eating the treats tossed to her when leash biting. She is releashed using treats and goes into her crate without coaxing. 11/29/24: Alexi FKA Diva is at the front of her crate with her ears back, wagging her tail as handler approaches. She is initially head shy when the leash is presented, but does eventually allow handler to place a slip lead over her head. She is brought out for a street walk and relieves herself quickly once outside. She pulls moderately to hard throughout the walk, sniffing her surroundings. She is aloof with handler throughout the walk, focusing on exploring her environment. When she passes dogs, she becomes alert with a high, stiff tail and pulls hard towards them, but does not vocalize. Handler is easily able to shorten the leash and walk her past the dogs without issue. She is brought back into the care center and returned to her pop-up crate without issue.

Date of intake:: 11/27/2024

Summary:: Hard barking and leash biting, then approached handler with soft body, tail wagging

Date of initial:: 11/30/2024

Summary:: Allows placement of muzzle and all handling. Tense when muzzle is on, but still seeking attention

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Diva so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to leash biting we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Alexi FKA Diva has been observed to jump up on handlers in social seeming manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: During intake Alexi FKA Diva has been observed to hard bark towards handlers. It is important to move slowly with Diva, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Alexi has been observed to bare teeth towards dogs, and lunge towards members of the public while on the street. Alexi will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting/ Mouthiness: Alexi FKA Diva has been observed to jump up and bite the leash. This behavior is not easily able to be redirected easily using treats or squeaky sounds. While leash biting Alexi has been observed to bite and hole handlers clothing. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
