Futon
Hello, my name is Futon. My animal id is #247370. I am a female tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/11/2026.
Futon is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Futon arrived at the Care Center as a stray. Upon arrival Futon was noted to be highly fearful, noted to be very tense for her medical exam. With time, Futon has shown improved sociability; in her most recent handling assessment she was noted to warm up to handlers and be treat receptive. Futon has been showing on-leash reactivity, observed to pull hard towards people and dogs when on walks with a tense body. Staff have reported that Futon's reactivity can be managed with treats and is showing promise with 'engage/disengage' clicker training. Medically, Futon is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Summary:: 2/17/26: Futon greets another dog at the gate with a tense body. She is extending her body forward to sniff then begins to growl and bark with lip lifted.
Summary (4):: 3/19/26: When a staff member was approaching Futon's kennel they were standing in the front corner with their front paws on the kennel door. They were staring at the staff member and as their kennel was approached they began hard barking and frantically followed along with their front paws still on the kennel door. As the staff member moved away they stopped barking but continued staring at the staff member while they returned to their position at the front corner of their kennel- 03/18/26: Futon is at the center of her kennel laying down as handler approaches. She is leashed without issue and pulls hard exiting kennel and walks with handler out to the driveway for her walk. Outside she is loose and walks with a fast wagging tail and occasionally jumps up on handler playfully. She allows handler to pet her and accepts tossed treats from handler throughout the walk. When walking past people in the driveay she pulls toward them with a fast wagging tail, and she is easily redirected with a treat when called by handler when she sees dogs. After a bit she is brought back inside and returned to kennel following tossed treats before interaction is ended. 3/10/26 (last entry)- Futon is laying down on her bed when handler approaches, as handler softly talks to her she comes to the front with a loose and wiggly body. She is easily leashed and is taken for a street walk. She is social with handler and gently takes treats. She allows handler to scratch her head, neck and back. When Futon passes people she hard stares at them and pulls towards them. Handler has to tug her away and tosses treats, she goes to eat them. Handler goes to the curb and as people pass, if she disengages and gives attention to handler they click and she is rewarded. She has a moderate pull to spots to sniff and jumps on handler with a soft body, handler scratches her full back. She continues to pull towards people as they return to the building, handler keeps distance. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (5):: 3/7/26: Futon is being walked to assess the severity of her lunging at people. One handler (1) takes Futon out of her kennel and to the driveway, where the other handler (2) is waiting. Handler 2 walks past Futon several times, with no lunging from Futon occurring. Futon shows interest and stretches her neck towards handler 2, but she does not pull hard and her paws don't leave the ground. Handler 1 walks Futon out to the street to reset her then comes back to the driveway where Futon passes both a third unfamiliar person and handler 2, still with no signs of lunging. Behavior will continue to monitor. 3/4/26: Futon is sitting at the front with a soft body. She is easily leashed using a treat as a lure. She pulls hard on leash. She is walked on the street where she continues to pull hard from spot to spot. She will jump onto handler with a soft body and allow brief petting on her side. When a person walks by Futon pulls hard and is focused, body tense. It takes a few attempts to refocus Futon but once she is focused on main handler she sits at handlers feet as people pass. She returns to kennel without issue. 3/2/26: A whiteboard note stated that Futon is "lunging at dogs and people outside". 2/23/26: Futon is lying on her kuranda bed in the back of her kennel. She comes forwards for a treat and the leash is draped over her head. She comes out willingly and is walked to the street. She balks when passing thresholds and a snowblower, but relaxes once on the street (quiet day due to snowstorm). She pulls moderately back through the building and is coaxed to the assessment room (see notes). She returns to her kennel willingly. 2/22/26: Futon is lying in her bed at the back of kennel as handler approaches. Once handler opens kennel door Futon slowly moves to front of kennel where she is easily leashed and pulled from kennel. In the backyard handler sits down and futon sits in front of handler. She accepts pets on her head, neck, chest and sides and leans into handler. She takes treats gently from handler. She is returned to kennel with no issue.
Summary (6):: 2/17/26- Futon is sitting at the back of her kennel with a tense body, handler softly talks to her and she slowly comes to the front with a low body, ears slightly pinned back with a low tail. She is easily leashed and pulls hard exiting the room. Futon is taken to the play yard for a dog dog. After she slowly approaches handler and sniffs at their hand, they offer her treats but she shows no interest. She has a little softer body with handler and allows them to scratch her chin and head. She relieves herself and sniffs around. She has a moderate pull back inside, she is easily clipped and pulls hard back into the room pulling towards the passing kennels with her heckles up. She readily goes back into her kennel without issue 2/17/26: Futon is lying down on her bed as the handler approaches. She slightly comes forward, allows leashing, and comes out the kennel and room. On the street, Futon switches between walking next to the handler with no tension and walking ahead with moderate to hard pulling. She doesn't display dog or people reactivity, however, as she walks past one person and they slightly move, Futon gets startled and pulls away. The handler offers a treat and slightly pets her head, but Futon doesn't display any interest. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and brings Futon to the room; as they wait, Futon frantically attempts to pull into the room. The handler walks her into the room and returns her to kennel with ease. 2/16/26: Futon is laying on her kuranda bed at the back of the kennel. She comes forward slightly for treats, but does not leave the bed. She retreats once the leash is presented. A second, familiar handler is called over to assist. After significant coaxing, Futon comes forwards enough to have the leash draped over her head and she cooperates exiting the kennel. Outside in the yard she sniffs around and relieves herself. Eventually she begins pulling towards the exit and is returned to the building. She returns to her kennel willingly. 2/16/26: Futon is laying at the back of the kennel when the handler approaches. The handler speaks in a soft tone and coaxes Futon to the front of the kennel. Futon is easily leashed and taken to the yard. She pulls moderately while on leash and does not react to other dogs or people. While in the yard she relieves herself quickly. The handler is able to clip their leash and Futon is returned to kennel with no issue.
Summary (7):: 2/15/26- Futon is laying at the back of her kennel curled up in a corner with a tight body, she stays at the back as handler unlocks her kennel and opens her door. Handler is able to lean in and lasso their leash onto her, once the leash is on her she slowly comes to the front and exits. She is taken to the play yard and she walks with her body low, looking around. She relieves herself and handler softly talks to her, she just looks at them with a neutral body. She is taken to the last pen and she allows handler to collar her with a drag line attached. She explores the pen and sniffs around. She comes to handler and jumps on their lap with her front paws allowing to scratch her head, neck and back. She then fully jumps up on the bench and goes between handler's back and the bench leaning her head on their shoulder. Handler scratches her chin, after some time she jumps down and explores some more of the pen with a neutral body. She allows handler to leash and she is taken to the K9 behavior office, place again on a drag line. She jumps on the desk with her front paws where handler sits and sniffs around, she then jumps down and walks around the room sniffing then goes under the desk the handler is sitting at. Handler gets up and sits on the couch Futon follows again going between handler's back and the couch leaning her head into them. Handler sat and fed her treats which she gently took her their hand. She then goes and pushes her whole snout into handler's pouch eating all of their treats. She is leashed and returned to her kennel without issue. 2/14/26: Futon is toward back of kennel, sitting, hunched over, avoiding eye contact. Treats are ineffective to lure her forward. After some time handler is able to reach in and leash Futon, Futon remains seated hunched over but soft body. Once leashed Futon walks out of kennel slowly but steadily. Futon is walked out to yard, she is low body, low head, walking with loose leash. Futon is kept on leash, sniff around yard, relieves herself. handler sits, Futon approaches but turns rear toward handler. Handler attempts gentle petting of rear and back/torso of Futon, Futon accept contact with neutral body. Futon takes treats from hand gently. Futon is walked back to kennel safely. 2/13/26: Futon greets handler at front of kennel with a neutral body. Futon is easily leashed and taken to backyard. Futon walked next to handler with slack in the leash. In the yard Futon accepted treats gently and leaned into pets. Futon climbed around on the piles of snow. Futon was returned to kennel with no issue. 2/12/26: Futon is at the back of the kennel when the handler approaches. The handler speaks in a soft voice and crouches. Futon remains at the back of the kennel with a tense body. The handler tosses treats and Futon is not receptive. The handler ends the interaction due to high FAS.
Date of intake:: 2/11/2026
Summary:: Growling, hard barking, and muzzle punching the crate door
Date of initial:: 2/12/2026
Summary:: Tense and pancaking in kennel, tucked tail, trembling, and seeking exit during exam
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Futon so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Futon has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Futon should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Futon was observed to growl, hard bark, and muzzle punch the crate door during intake. It is important to move slowly with Futon, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On-Leash Reactivity: At the care center, Futon has been observed to react to people on leash, pulling towards them with a tense body. Futon may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see hand-out for On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
