Animal Profile

Peach Cobbler

Hello, my name is Peach Cobbler. My animal id is #226352. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/5/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Peach Cobbler is on the at-risk list for behavior reasons. During her stay at the care center Peach has been observed to be highly fearful and has allowed limited handling by staff. When approached in kennel Peach has been observed to retreat from the front and growl towards handlers. She will maintain a tense trembling body, low head, and pinned ears while handlers interact with her. With a very slow approach, she has slowly warmed up to select handlers. She tolerates handling and gentle, brief petting. Throughout her stay Peach has become more anxious, vocalizing randomly on walks and has been observed to react to dogs while on leash vocalizing and pulling towards them. After reacting to the dog Peach will turn to the handler. One instance redirecting onto the handler and another instance jumping up at their face. Medically, she has dental disease, dermatitis, and anemia.

She arrived at ACC as a stray - and she has been struggling to acclimate to the high stress environment. She will need a quiet home to decompress, get some rest, and show you all of her sweet and silly sides.

Summary:: 5/28/25: Peach Cobbler is frantic at the gate while greeting the other dog. She is pacing back and forth and jumping onto the gate.

Summary (4):: 5/29/25: Peach is observed to shred her linens when returning to kennel. 5/28/25: Peach Cobbler is standing at the front with a neutral body. She is leashed using a treat as a lure. Treats are tossed on the ground out of the kennel prior to allow Peach out. She does not engage with the treats but pulls hard down the hall, randomly barking. She is walked on the street where she will randomly bark throughout the walk. She pulls hard darting back and forth on leash, sometimes stopping to sniff something, sometimes just pulling. When near the curb she makes attempts to jump up on a parked car. She will turn to handler when called but is otherwise aloof and when focused on handle will jump up high, all four legs off the ground before sitting when prompted. She then goes back to darting back and forth or trying to jump on parked cars. She is easily returned to kennel. 5/27/25: Peach Cobbler is sitting in her kennel head lowered and body tense and shaking when handler approaches. Handler unlocks the kennel and Peach Cobbler quickly stands up with a soft body and wagging tail. She begins jumping onto the kennel door. Handler unlocks the kennel and easily leashes her. She pulls hard out of the kennel screaming as they exit the room. She pulls towards the pop ups outside the elevator before barking and turning and jumping up onto the handler with her front paws. Handler quickly straight arms her off and tosses treats which she quickly eats. She pulls moderately out of the elevator. She barks at a staff member and jumps towards them. On the street, Peach Cobbler sees a dog standing off to the side. She barks towards the dog and then turns to the handler jumping up towards their face with a closed mouth. Handler is able to toss treats to redirect her and she continues pulling hard to moderate on the street. Peach Cobbler is aloof with the handler on the street for the rest of the walk. When back in the shelter she starts to pull hard as she is brought back into the kennel room and returned to kennel with out issue.

Summary (5):: 5/26/25: Peach Cobbler was reported to redirect onto the handler during her evening walk. An ACCR pulled Peach later and she was observed to jump towards the handler's leash and not towards any part of their body. 5/25/25: Peach Cobbler is at the front with a soft body and wagging tail. She is slowly leashed with ease and taken out of the kennel. She pulls hard out of the room barking and pulling towards the passing dogs. Peach Cobbler tries to jump onto the handler when exiting the room and is straight armed off. On the street, she pulls moderately stopping to sniff or stare at dogs with a tense body. Peach Cobbler is then returned to kennel by tossing treats and the leash removed without issue. 5/23/25: Peach Cobbler has been observed to be kennel reactive. While leaving the room, she vocalized while slightly pulling towards the kennel. 5/22/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Peach Cobbler is jumpy and mouthy. 5/19/25- Peach cobbler is laying down at the back of her kennel with a soft body, when handler unlocks the door she comes to the front with a wagging tail. She is easily leashed and when exiting the room she tries to pull towards the passing kennels. She is taken for a street walk. She walks on a loose leash and is social with handler, coming to them when called to gently take treats from their hand. When people are walking by Peach watches them with a neutral body, she then tries to slowly approach. Handler presents a treat and gets Peach's attention, then she follows the command to sit and is rewarded. She is taken for an assessment and is social with handlers, taking treats. She explores the room and sniff around. She is easily releashed and again was pulling towards kennels when returning, she went into kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 5/13/25 - Peach cobbler is laying down in her kennel upon approach. Handler slowly unlocks kennel, talking to Peach as they do so. Peach's tail waggles as she slowly gets up. She sniffs treats dropped into her kennel, and the kennel door is open. She moves her head towards the opening, and handler presents the leash. She flinches slightly, but allows handler to leash her with a slow approach. Once leashed she is led out to the play-yard. She continues to display handling sensitivity - flinching away from handler - but with a slow approach she begins to approach handler, sniffing them and investigating her surroundings. She allows handler to place a drag leash on her, and she engages very briefly with toys (chasing them when thrown, but not engaging beyond that). She allows handler to re-leash her, and remove the drag leash. On her walk back to kennel - she sees another dog enter the play-yard. She tenses up slightly and pulls harder in the direction of the other dog. She is re-directed once the other dog is out of site - and brought back to her kennel without issue. 5/10/25- Peach Cobbler is standing at the front of her kennel with a loose and wiggly body, she is easily leashed and taken to the play yard. She sniffs around the pen and handler softly speaks to her, she comes to handler with a soft body. She allows them to pet her head, neck, chin and back. She is then taken for a street walk, Peach walks on a loose leash and will have a slight pull towards various spots to sniff. She passes a small dog barking at her, she just looks at them but keeps walking with a neutral body and no vocalization. When people pass her she has a slight pull towards them with a soft body. Handler calls to her and she follows them. Handler offers her treats but she shows no interest in them. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 5/10/25: Peach Cobbler is standing in her kennel with a tense body. Handler speaks to her in a soft voice and she low wags her tail and steps forward. She is not interested in treats tossed. Handler presents the leash and she steps back. A squeaker is used and she steps forward to sniff but then moves away from the leash. Handler kneels and she comes forward, sniff handler through the bars and sniffs the leash but moves away from leashing again. Handler opens the door more and she comes forward and handler is able to secure the leash. She is walked on the street where she remains near handler, hypervigilant turning quickly towards noises and movements in her peripheral. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel.

Summary (7):: 05/07/25: Peach Cobbler is laying in the back of her kennel as handler approaches. She is offered high value treats slowly by handler who gently tosses them toward Peach. She stares at handler with a tense body before adjusting herself and curling herself into a ball. Handler begins attempting to coax her from the back of kennel with baby talk and more treats but is unsuccessful. She begins to shake vigorously and lays her head down so handler ends interaction to not further stress Peach Cobbler out. 5/6/25- Peach cobbler is at the back of the kennel when handler approaches with a tense body, shaking while giving a low growl. Handler tosses in treats but Peach shows no interest in them. Handler attempts to lasso a leash onto Peach, when the leash touches her head she jerks her head away while staying in the same spot. Handler was finally able to leash and fully open the kennel door. Peach stayed on her bed, handler moved away from the kennel letting the leash out full length. After a moment Peach slowly came to the front of the kennel, looking back and forth. Handler softly spoke to encourage Peach but she just stayed at the front with a low head, ears slightly pinned. Handler tossed treats in front of her kennel but she again showed no interest. Handler applies slight pressure to the leash and Peach comes out of her kennel. She exits the room with her body and head low, ears slightly pinned. She is taken to the play yard. She sniffs around the perimeter, handler tosses treats Peach just sniffs them but doesn't take any. She has a slight tense body and looking around. When handler calls to her, she comes and sniffs them. She easily goes into pens, handler tossed a toy but she shows no interest. She has a neutral body over time and just sniffs. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 5/6/25- ACS observed Peach cobbler at the back of her kennel growling at them when they approached. 5/6/25: Peach Cobbler is laying at the back of the kennel when the handler approaches. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Peach Cobbler so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. No Dogs Parks: Due to on leash reactivity and redirecting onto the handler we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Peach has been observed to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Peach has been observed to mouth handlers hands with mild pressure. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Peach puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Peach has been observed to be fearful during her stay. Observed to retreat from handlers and growl when approached. It is important to move slowly with Peach, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Peach has been observed to pull towards the other dogs in the kennel room with a tense body. During her stay Peach has redirected onto the handler after leaving the kennel room. Peach will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
