Animal Profile

Heaven

Hello, my name is Heaven . My animal id is #224220. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/16/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Heaven is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him/her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. Heaven interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for cat parents with either an average amount of cat experience, demonstrate a basic understanding of typical cat behavior.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/23/25 FB61 in cat den upon approach, body low and face tense. She retreats to her perch quickly with a low body and tail as I lift her den cover and she slow-blinks at me with her head lowered from her vertical space. She keeps slow-blinking hard with tilted ears - she is very scared - and she tolerates all petting while remaining frozen. No interest in treats or toys right now. When moved to Flushing Meowdows she hid beneath the furniture. She allows all resident cats to approach her and sniff her with no signs of escalation. She can usually be found hiding next to resident cat Paula. 4/29/25 FB58 Laying in her hide, slightly tense/wary but allows pets and leans cheek into pets. May need more focused socialization in the free-roam room. 5/09/25 FB61 In cubby upon approach, eyes wide, head lowered, pupils dilated and ears tilted. She makes eye contact when spoken to and she slow-blinks hard when I open the cubby door. She shows immediate interest in the temptation treats offered and she eats them when I close the kennel door, even stepping forward into her main kennel space. I attempt petting her again after she eats some more and she leans in gently for cheek and chin rubs. A sweet girl. Nice and round. 5/15/25 FB61 Remained tense in her litterbox today with ears flat. She hides her face further when pet and she does note show interest in her treats today. Feeling pretty shut down it seems. I speak to her softly and end the session. When I check on her later the treats remain uneaten :( 5/28/25 FB58 Initially in her bed with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated - she is tolerant of one pet before hissing. She shows no interest in treats offered and move into the litter box in her cubby. When I later approach and offer my hand, she tenses and presses along the back of the cubby, hissing harshly and raising a paw as if to swat. 5/28/25 FB709 Today, Heaven displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note. 6/03/25 FB61 In cat bed upon approach, huddled up in her blankets. She is tolerant of petting today while slow-blinking hard. I don't push it too much to keep her stress levels as low as possible. She sniffs the treats offered but she remains too focused on me to eat them while I'm watching... 6/6/25 FB58 Laying in her bed with a tense face and body, tolerant of touch with the scratcher tool before fur begins to ripple and I stop petting. When I offer out some squeeze up, she backs away so I leave it in her food bowl. 6/7/25 FB79 Inside of her hidey bed, Heaven is curled up with her ears forward, tight tail and her eyes wide; she hisses when i speak to her and when i offer treats. She lip licks and her ears tilt to the side before she reaches out to swat the treat that is in my hand; Heaven low grumbles and does not escalate any further. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back

CHARACTER TYPE: : Calm,Sweet,Affectionate

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 2

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: Due to showing signs of FAS in shelter, and requiring a longer period to warm up - the behavior team recommends Heaven goes to a home with no young children under the age of 5 to provide her with an environment in which they can appropriately acclimate/be socialized.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Inside of the litter box, Heaven has a very low body with forward ears and soft eyes with her tail tightly wrapped around her body; the assessor speaks to her softly and her head and eyes slowly lower to avoid further interaction. Heaven tolerates pets on her head, cheeks with no reaction when pet down and around her body slowly she remains still/frozen with her low body, low head and gaze avoiding eye contact. She does however, allow the assessor to pick her up and place her back down with no issues; when in her litter she returns to her previous position with a tense body, hunched shoulders, tight tail, low head and gaze but remained tolerant and slightly leaned into cheek rubs with no other reaction. 5/19/25 Curled up in her litter box, Heaven has forward ears with low almond eyes and her tail tightly wrapped; she remains very still when the assessor approached and spoke to her softly. Heaven allowed all pets on her head as well as down and around her body with no reaction and when the assessor applied light pressure to her abdomen she remained still/calm. She did lean in to sniff treats that were placed down in front of her but lowered her head back down and avoid eye contact with the assessor. Heaven interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting.
