Pre-Screener Form

Lola is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Lola in the care center has been intensely kennel fighting, including barking, lunging, and attempting to bite at dogs when passing their kennels, making it difficult to walk her safely at times. She also shows handling concerns, snapping and mouthing at hands during leashing, having to be clipped to her collar. Lola is social with handlers and is very affectionate, but is struggling to acclimate. Medically, Lola is apparently healthy.

Lola has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has shown to kennel fight towards neighboring dogs in care and has begun to display snapping and growling towards handlers' hands. In calmer settings, she is able to engage with handlers with a loose, wiggly body, jumping up to solicit pets and leaning into contact. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Summary:: According to Lola’s previous owner(s), Lola has interacted with different dogs and is often described as hide initially and actively avoid unfamiliar dogs on/off leash as well as familiar dogs. 03/06/26 Lola is introduced to a novel male while off leash. She approaches the gate with high ears and flagged tail. She sniffs the male at the gate before biting the gate, baring teeth, and vocalizing. Lola continues to pull hard towards the gate with a tense frame even after she is moved away. 02/28/26: Lola was introduced to a novel female dog. Lola initially engaged in displacement behavior in the yard before noticing the novel dog standing at the gate and staring at her. She eventually approached and engaged in brief gate greetings, then immediately disengaged and sought out the handler. Lola passed the gate while only glancing at the novel dog, demonstrating avoidance behavior. Both dogs were separated, concluding the interaction.

Summary (6):: 3/20/26: Lola is at the front of her kennel, and is barking while jumping off the side of the kennel wall towards the opposite dog who is also barking in that direction. Lola is clipped to her leash, and immediately tries to kennel fight with the dog next to her, lunging and hard barking in that direction. Lola is brought into the behavior office where she interacts with the staff member in the room, jumping on them in a social manner, leaning into petting and trying to get onto there laps. Lola in the room explores the room, interacts with staff and lays on the ground chewing a toy. Lola is put back into kennel, where she is held against the wall and unable to kennel fight and easily returned to kennel. 3/14/26: Lola is barking towards the wall at the dog in kennel next to her while the handler approaches her kennel. She continues to bark and jump up and down towards the wall as the handler clips her collar from above her head. Once clipped, launches out of kennel and tries to lunge towards the next dog in kennel. She is able to be quickly taken into the behavior room. In the room, she would run around while heavy panting. She would constantly jump up on the handlers and would constantly jump up at the door that leads to her kennel room. She is able to engage in a snuffle mat. She tries to pull towards the dog in kennel when being returned back to her kennel. She is able to quickly enter and would begin to bark at the wall again as the handler unclips her collar, locks the door, and covers her kennel with a sheet before walking away. 3/13/26: Lola is noted to snap & growl towards handler's hands during leashing attempts. When a behavior team handler approaches the kennel to assist, Lola continues to bark and try to mouth at their hands as they clip her collar from above her head. Once she is clipped, she launches out of kennel and lunges towards the dog in kennel next to her and bites at their kennel door bars. She is quickly pulled away and is then taken into the behavior room. 3/6/26: Lola is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be clipped to her collar and she then pulls on the way to the play yard for play group. In the yard, she has a loose and wiggly body as she approaches the handlers and jumps up to receive pets. She approaches the gate with a loose body to greet the other dog. She then begins to have a tense body and starts to growl, hard bark, bare teeth and snaps at the other dog's face while muzzle punching the gate. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She is taken away and she then pulls hard on the way back to her kennel and enters with no issues.

Summary (7):: 2/28/26: Lola is standing on he bed as handler approaches. She is able to come forward to the front and is clipped to her collar with ease. She is then taken to the play yard for play group. In the yard, she greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body and her hackles raised before disengaging and not re-approaching the gate. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She is able to return back to her kennel with no issues. 2/28/26: Lola is standing on her bed as handler approaches her kennel. She has tense body while backing away into the corner as the handler attempts to leash her. She would growl and snap at the leash as the handler is able to get the loop over her head. Once leashed, she is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, she has loose and wiggly body and would jump up on the handlers to receive treats and pets. She is able to collared with a drag leash attached. She is hesitant to exit the room and would back away from the door while it was opened. She is able to be coaxed out of the room with treats before being able to return back to her kennel with no issues. 02/27/26: When the handler approached the kennel door, Lola was standing on her cot and became alert with a loose body and ears forward. She approached cautiously, hesitating before stepping off the cot. The handler tossed cheese slices to encourage her forward and crouched to hand-feed through the kennel door and then through the slip lead. On the first leashing attempt, Lola whipped her head away but cautiously reapproached for more cheese. When offered a handful of cheese, the handler was able to leash her successfully. Lola exited the kennel willingly. During transport to the behavior assessment room, Lola walked with a low posture, high shoulders, and scanned her environment. In the room, she engaged primarily in displacement scenting. She briefly investigated a toy but did not consume jerky treats offered on the floor, though she continued to accept cheese. After some time, Lola solicited attention by leaning her hindquarters against the handler’s leg. She allowed petting and scratching on her hindquarters and leaned in further with ears back, indicating a desire for continued contact. Lola was then returned to her kennel and secured safely.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend that Lola be placed in an adult-only home. SINGLE-PET HOME/ RECOMMEND NO DOG PARKS: Due to the concerning behaviors that Lola has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Lola should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Lola associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats. Place with a New Hope partner: Lola has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has shown to kennel fight towards neighboring dogs in care and has begun to display snapping and growling towards handlers' hands. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful: Lola is described by previous owners to be fearful when held/ restrained, startled, and pushed/pulled off furniture. In the care center she is noted to thrash on the leash. To address her fearfulness, gradual desensitization and counter-conditioning, especially around leashing and new environments, will build her confidence. Please see the handout on the Decompression period and Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Lola is noted to snap & growl towards handler hands during leashing attempts. Training should focus on slow, predictable leashing routines, offering high-value rewards for voluntary engagement, and gradual desensitization to touch around the collar area to reduce defensive reactions.Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Lola is noted to kennel fight when exiting the kennel room and when dogs pass her kennel she will lunge and growl towards the front of her kennel.Training should emphasize calm, structured kennel exits, increasing distance from dog-side triggers, and reinforcing quiet, relaxed behavior at the kennel front to help reduce reactivity. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
