Riot is currently at risk due to behavioral reasons. When he first arrived at the care center, Riot was fearful, tense and hypervigilant. He would flinch whenever touched. Over time, Riot has warmed up with handlers seeking attention and allowing petting. However, he struggles to adjust to kennel life and has been observed to resource guard items and leash bite. Medically, Riot has dental disease.

I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary:: 9/11/24: Riot is leash biting when approaching the gate to greet the other dog. He then snaps at the other dog through the fence.

Summary (4):: 10/03/24: Riot is standing at the front of kennel with a loose body and holding his bedding in his mouth as handler approaches. Handler offers treats to trade but he does not let go of the bedding until stepping outside his kennel. Once outside he shakes off and pulls moderately into the pen. He immediately becomes interested in the snuffle ball and is engaged with it. Handler begins a trade and he displayed the same/very similar behavior as described in previous EN (09/26). After about 10 minutes of trade, handler continued resource guarding training. While Riot was licking the licki matt, handler would approach and toss treats onto it, his body would remain soft and he would wag his tail as handler approached. Handler knelt down and tossed some treats near him, he would immediately disengaged, a reward marker was used at that time, and after eating the treat he would continue with the licki mat. When it was time to return, handler picked up the drag leash and Riot jumped up and began leash biting. Handler immediately let go. Handler squeaked and tossed him some toys and he let go of the leash to pick up one of the toys. He carried it all the way back to the entrance of his room, dropped it, and went in his kennel without issue.

Summary (5):: 09/26/24: Riot is standing at the front of kennel with a loose body and holding his toy in his mouth. He was easily leashed and brought out to the yard. He was put on a drag leash. As handler put kennel rope back on their body, Riot jumped up towards handler attempting to leash bite. Handler tossed some treats onto his face and he was easily redirected. Handler began playing a game of "trade/fetch with rules", Riot was engaged and receptive for a couple minutes, but after a couple of successful attempts, he lost interest and stopped picking up any toy. Handler directed his attention to the LATTE items and engaged with them briefly, interacted most with the snuffle mat. Handler introduced resource guarding training protocol: as Riot engaged with the snuffle mat, handler would toss a high value treat near him and reward mark when he would disengage with the snuffle mat. After 5 successful attempts, handler decided to "push" (push/drop/stick) and pair the verbal cue, "Leave It." When attempting to leash, he began intensely leash biting and trying to play tug with the leash. Handler released tension on leash, but Riot continued biting the leash, even after handler let go. Handler tosses a copious amount of treats onto his face and onto the floor. While Riot is occupied eating the treats, handler manages to lasso him. However, as soon as he feel the leash, he begins to leash bite intensely again. One would have to be continuously tossing treats. He was offered a toy to hold, but he was not interested. He ceased leash biting once threshold was about to be crossed back into the care center, from play yard. He was easily returned without further issue.

Summary (6):: 9/21/24: As the handler passes Riot's kennel to hang up signs Riot is spinning, pacing, heavy panting, and vocalizing. His kennel and paws are painted with feces from the pacing. He stops when he handler approaches and offers a treat but immediately resumes as the handler walks away. 9/18/24: Riot is observed to be social and seeking attention while in the yard. He approaches handlers with a wagging tail and a toy in his mouth. He lightly jumps up on his hind legs and leans on handler while accepting pets. He leans into head rubs and allows petting around the body. He accepts treats and will stand next to handler accepting more pets. Handler plays fetch with Riot and trades toys with him multiple times, Riot will approach handler quickly and wait for the toy to be thrown, at times becoming impatient and attempting to jump for the toy before its thrown. After playing for a while he is put on a slip lead and returned to kennel without issue. 9/13/24: Riot is laying down in his pop up crate when a staff member approaches. The blanket covering the crate is moved aside and Riot stands with a soft and wiggly body with a toy in his mouth. Staff member open the front of the crate and places and enrichment item into the crate. When staff member attempts to lock the door, Riot hard barks and lunges towards staff members hand. He remains tense and growls and barks at staff members until staff member is no longer visible. 9/11/24: Riot is barking and jumping up at down at the front of the pop up crate when handler approach. He was leashed with some difficulty due to him jumping up and down. Upon exiting the kennel he immediately starts leash biting. He is able to be redirected using treats. Riot is brought to the playyard where he continues to leash bite. Jumping up on the handlers leg and kicking off. He is brought for a dog dog interaction where he snaps at the other dog. After reacting to the other dog Riot would turn and begin leash biting again. He is not able to be redirected. Riot begins to jump up on the handler while leash biting. As the handler is returning Riot to kennel he continues to leash bite. Riot is sometimes able to be redirected after returning inside. He is easily able to be returned to his crate.

Summary (7):: 9/10/24: Riot was easily leashed and removed from his pop up crate. He started leash biting in the elevator, despite that he was able to be lead to the back yard without issue. He allowed the handler to clip a drag leash to his collar without issue, and then ran around the pen, chasing soft rope toys. He observed passing dogs and stood on the bench to get a better view, but did not bark or otherwise engage. He greeted the dog in the neighboring pen with a waggy tail and soft body, and came to the handler when called away from the fence. He was easily walked back inside and returned to his pop-up crate without issue. He was not observed to be barking throughout the interaction. 9/1/24: Riot is observed in his pop up crate pacing back and forth and hard barking at passing people and dogs. Riot will stop when approached and will take treats quickly from handler but will continue barking when handler begins leaving. 8/22/24: Riot is pacing back and forth at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is leans away from the leash but allows the handler to slide it over his head. Riot walks outside where he walks with a lowered body, tail, and head. Riot approaches the handler and handler presents their hands. He leans his head into the handler's hand and allows the handler to pet him on the neck and back. Riot is returned to kennel without issue. 8/20/24: Riot was easily removed and walked before being brought to the behavior room. Riot was fearful , tensing up when handled but he allowed to the handler to pet him with some coaxing. He was Easily placed in his kennel without issue. 8/19/20: Riot is at the front of the kennel baying, jumping, and digging at the kennel door. He continuously jumps up while the handler tries to leash him but is eventually leashed using a treat lure. He is taken for a street walk where he pulls mildly and remains tense and hypervigilant. Any time something brushes against or touches his hind end he flinches hard. He is taken for his assessment where he is tense, skittish, avoidant, and flinches hard when handled, frequently shaking his head. He is collared but the assessment is not done at this time due to FAS. He is returned to kennel easily where he begins to shrilly bark, bay, and spin rapidly.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Riot so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Riot is fearful and displayed resource guarding during the toy portion of his assessment. He should go to a home with older behavior savvy children.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Riot was observed to hover over his toy during the toy portion of his handling assessment. He should learn the trade game using positive reinforcement. Fearful: Riot is nervous and needs a slow approached. Please see the handout on Decompression. Leash Biting: Riot has been observed to bite the leash persistently. After reacting to a dog Riot would spin and begin to leash bite. This behavior is occasionally able to be redirected using treats. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
