Animal Profile

Caramel Swirl

Hello, my name is Caramel Swirl. My animal id is #223617. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 8 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/31/2025.

Caramel Swirl is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Caramel Swirl has been highly social with caretakers and handlers during her stay in care. But she has become difficult to walk due to her intermittent leash biting, which is increasing in intensity. At times, she will take toys or treats from handlers during leashing, but once out, she can be difficult to refocus due to her persistently jumping up and biting the lead. Medically, Caramel Swirl is apparently healthy.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Summary:: Due to Caramel Swirl entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 06/01/25 Caramel is used as today's greeter dog where she will be introduced to (5) novel male dogs at the gate, while off leash at the care center. Caramel's behavior remains consistent in all 5 interactions, approaching the gate exuberantly and greeting each novel male dog with a soft, wiggly frame. Caramel swirl will offer bounces and play bows, attempting to solicit their attention and where she could, would remain self-present offering more bounces. In the event that she is ignored, Caramel will seek attention from one of the handlers present, soliciting play. After her (5) interactions comes to completion, Caramel Swirl is returned to kennel.

Summary (1):: Continued Dog-Dog Notes: 05/28/25 Caramel Swirl is introduced at the gate to a Female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Caramel Swirl will approach the gate adjacent to the greeter dog, with a soft, wiggly frame, offering play bows and bounces. The greeter dog will do the same, soliciting play. Caramel swirl is taken into the greeter dog's pen in order to greet face-to-face. Caramel Swirl will enter the pen, remaining soft in frame as the greeter dog waits patiently, sitting softly. Caramel will approach the greeter dog with a soft frame, gently scenting her as the greeter dog scents caramel. Caramel Swirl will place their paw on Donnie 's shoulder, soliciting play before the greeter dog exchanges body contact with her. At this point they engage in rough play, trading paw slap and body slamming each other. Caramel is tolerant as the greeter dog becomes mouthy, allowing the greeter dog to play freely. Both dogs are separated after some time in order to shake-off and decompress. Caramel will shake off, remaining soft and wiggly and is now used as todays greeter dog for other interactions. Caramel Swirl is now introduced to a novel female dog at the gate while off leash at the care center. Caramel swirl will approach the gate displaying a soft, wiggly frame, offering play bows, soliciting play. The novel female dog presents as uncomfortable, being avoidant, not showing Caramel any attention. Caramel Swirl will proceed to explore, disengaging from the interaction and ignoring the novel female dog. Caramel is introduced to another female greeter dog where they both approach the gate soft and wiggly, offering play bows and bounces. Caramel will toe-tap at the gate as the greeter dog remain self-present behind the gate maintaining a soft frame. Caramel is moved to the back of her pen, allowing the greeter dog in the pen in order to greet face-to-face. Both dogs are kept on leas The greeter dog will enter the pen maintaining a soft frame, approaching Caramel softly, scenting her. The two will engage in scenting one another genitalia before Caramel paw slaps her, soliciting play. As the greeter dog moves away from Caramel, attempting to initiate chase play, Caramel will continue to slam her body into hers. As the greeter dog continues to stay active, Caramel becomes frustrated, attempting to trade body contact, unwilling to chase. Caramel's frustration leads to her snarling at the greeter dog, quickly being moved away by handler. At this point, they are separated, and Caramel is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 04/02/25 Caramel Swirl is introduced to a male greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Caramel Swirl will greet the greeter dog by scenting them at the gate with a soft frame. She remains soft as she walks away to explore. Caramel is aloof, maintaining her distance away from the gate. Summary (4):: 06/27/25 (Trainer Note): Caramel Swirl was sleeping on her bed as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and taken to the training room. She was loose and wiggly and solicited attention from the handler. Caramel Swirl was able to orient to the handler and receive enrichment. After several rounds of LATTE, Caramel Swirl would sit before receiving more enrichment. Caramel Swirl leant into more affection from the handler and was easily leashed and returned to her kennel.

Summary (5):: 6/23/25: (1) As the handler approached the kennel, Caramel began jumping against the glass and barking. The handler tossed treats and offered a toy but she remained high energy and jumping. Caramel exited the kennel with the slip lead caught over her leg and head. She began leash biting and tugging on the leash hard. Handler attempted to trade for a tennis ball, but Caramel continued to grip the leash and began shaking her head. A behavior staff member came over and helped return Caramel to the kennel with the leash and retrieved the leash after closing the kennel. (2) After giving Caramel Swirl some time to settle, an adoption counselor requested assistance from a canine behavior handler to take her out of kennel for an adoption interaction. The handler gets toys and sliced cheese before approaching the Caramel Swirl kennel. She is lying down in her kennel, chewing and batting at a ball. When she sees the handler, she begins panting and starts jumping up to the top of her kennel. The handler first offers her a toy, which she initially grabs, but once the handler attempts to leash her while she has the toy, Caramel drops the toy and grabs the lead, then pulls it into her kennel. She releases when offered the sliced cheese. She seeks more cheese and the handler can leash her easily then. She is taken to the play yard for her interaction. Due to the heat, interactions are kept short. But Caramel Swirl maintains a loose body and seeks attention from both staff and the potential adopters. She occasionally enters the pool to dive for treats and wallow in the water. Once the interaction is complete, she returns to her kennel without issue. 06/19/25 (Trainer Note): Carmel Swirl was sleeping on her bed as the handler approaches. she briefly help the leash in her mouth as the handler attempted to leash and readily traded for treats. Date of initial:: 4/1/2025

Summary:: loose and wiggly, loves treats, acts head-shy at times

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13); Due to caramel swirl fearfulness, we recommend she is notbe placed in a home with No children (under 13).

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/Anxiety: Caramel Swirl displayed a tuck tail, flinching behavior, and will become conflicted with interacting with the handlers; she will go from fearful to mostly social on her own terms. To help Caramel Swirl overcome her fear and anxiety, use positive reinforcement by rewarding her with treats and praise when she displays calm and social behavior. Gradually desensitize her to fear-inducing situations, starting with less intense scenarios and pairing them with positive experiences. Please see the handout on decompression period/Generalized anxiety. Leash Biting: Caramel begins leash biting when being taken from her kennel, and on occasion, once out of her kennel and being walked outside. Caramel can be difficult to redirect at times but when she does, she accepts high value treats like sliced cheese and plush toys. Please see handout on Arousal.
