Retreats from collar with tense body and wide eyes. Takes treats hard. Snaps at handler when they go to remove slip leash Soft handling: Fearful Exuberant handling: Fearful Comments: Tense body, stares at handler Arousal Jog comments: Follows handler readily, head whipping at the handler Knock Knock comments: Approaches handler readily Toy Toy comments: Grips firmly and engages with the toy, snaps at the assess-a-hand multiple times when it approaches When brought into the assessment room Paris was observed to be tense and fearful. Noted to have a tense face and whale eyes. When the handler approaches Paris she begins panting heavily and moves away. The handler offers high value treats and spray cheese. Paris is not receptive. The handler presents the collar and Paris retreats to the door and begins seeking exit. When the handler speaks to her in a soft voice, Paris huffs at them. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Paris is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: According to Paris's previous owner(s), Paris will hard bark and growl towards familiar and unfamiliar dogs. Paris has lived with dogs in her previous home. 8/8/26: Paris is introduced to a novel neutered male and approaches the fence with a tense body, high flagged tail, and raised hackles. She sniffs the other dog through the fence, freezes, and then begins hard growling. She is pulled away and redirects without issue.

Summary (7):: 8/29/26: Paris is observed to vocalize (whining) while in her crate; she does this a lot, even though the hallway is not active. 8/24/26: As handler approaches Paris's crate, she is observed to be lying down but quickly watches the handler as they begin to unlock her crate. She slowly gets up and is then easily leashed and removed from her crate. Once removed, she is then taken for a street walk. Throughout the walk, she walks alongside the handler and quickly relieves herself. Once the walk was completed, she was then returned back inside for her reassessment. Secondary handler gives her a treat, which she takes with hard pressure, and afterwards the treats are being tossed. After a collar is placed on her, the primary handler attempts to remove their slip lead as she is connected to a drag leash. During this time, each time the handler would place their hand near her neck to remove it, she would continuously snap and head-whip towards the handler's hand. Shortly after, the assessment was continued. Once completed (see assessment for more details), she is then re-leashed, clipped, and returned back to her crate with no further issues. 08/24/26: Paris is at the front of her crate as handler approaches, she is leashed with a treat and takes it with moderate intensity so treats are tossed to her for the rest of the interaction. She exits kennel and walks down the stairs with handler and out to the street. When outside she is aloof and passes people without issue. She accepts treats and stops to sniff/relieve herself throughout the walk. After a while she is brought back inside and returns to kennel following tossed treats. 08/13/26: Paris is at the front of her crate as handler approaches, she is easily leashed while distracted with some treats and is taken to the street for her walk. Outside she walks alongside handler and pulls forward very mildly toward spots to sniff. She relieves herself outside and passes people and dogs without issue while out. When accepting treats she takes them intensely so handler tosses them. She is walked for a while more before being brought back inside, she returns to kennel following a tossed treat. 8/4/26: Paris is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body; she is easily leashed and brought out of the room. On the street, Paris walks with mild leash tension; she doesn't react to people. while walking into the driveway, Paris doesn't react to the two large dogs present. the handler brings Paris inside for her assessment, but it's ended early to reduce FAS (see notes). The handler clips their leash and brings Paris to her kennel; she hesitates, but enters her kennel with ease.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home. Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Paris has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that she should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Paris associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Paris has been observed to snap at the assess-a-hand when it approaches while in the possession of a toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Paris' mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Paris' previous owner states that she will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Paris' previous owner states that she will take treats roughly. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach DOG to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Handling Sensitivity: Paris' previous owner states that she will hard bark, growl, and lunge when her paws are touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Paris to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Paris' previous owner states that she is fearful of loud noises and will bark and growl when startled. They also state that she is fearful when pushed off furniture. While in care, Paris has been observed to be avoidant of handlers and will begin to seek exit when they attempt to interact. During her reassessment, Paris was observed to snap at handlers while they were taking her slip leash off. It is important to move slowly with Paris, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Paris' previous owner states that she was anxious in the home and would bark alot. If Paris displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Paris' previous owner states that she will hard bark and growl towards dogs while on leash. Paris will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior.
