Hello, my name is Sweet Sadie. My animal id is #223973. I am a female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/5/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Sweet Sadie is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Sweet Sadie has displayed arousal concerns in care, reacting to dogs on leash, attempting to redirect and mouth handlers limbs/clothing, and attempting to mount staff when she becomes aroused making it difficult to handler her safely at times. Medically, Sweet Sadie is currently underweight but overall healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Pre-Screener Form Sweet Sadie is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Sweet Sadie came into the care center as a stay, so her history is unknown. In care, she has not adjusted to the care center environment and displayed high levels of arousal and on-leash reactivity in the care center. She consistently pulls hard on leash and exhibits vocalizations and reactivity when in proximity to other dogs. During multiple handling sessions, Sadie has demonstrated inappropriate mounting behavior, repeated jumping, and mouthing of handlers' clothing and arms, particularly when overstimulated or excited. Although she can be redirected at times and has shown the ability to engage with handlers when provided with structure and treats. Due to her low threshold for arousal, jumpy/mouthy behavior, and challenges with impulse control and leash reactivity, Sweet Sadie is available for rescue through one of our New Hope partners who can provide behavior support and continued training in a calm, structured environment.

Your newly adopted pet is underweight and the staff veterinarians are issuing a TEMPORARY waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment through to the resolution of the issue. At the time of a full recovery you may choose to have your veterinarian perform the spay/neuter surgery, or make provisions to return the pet to ACC for sterilization.

Summary:: Due to Sweet Sadie entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 04/12/25: When off leash at the Care Center Sadie is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Sweet Sadie approaches with forward ears and frame as the novel female approaches cautiously, with a low head. Before reaching the gate Sweet Sadie begins bouncing into prey bows before quickly escalating to hard barking and lunging. The novel female will walk away displacement scenting in avoidance. Both dogs are separated thus concluding the interaction. 04/06/25 Sweet Sadie is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Sweet Sadie doesn't greet the novel male dog, coming in hot lunging towards the gate. She begins to hard bark with raised hackles. She is moved away by the handler present, maintaining their distance from the gate. Sweet Sadie is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (7):: 04/12/25 (playgroup): Sweet Sadie is barking and pacing back and forth in kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and pulls mildly out to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). Sweet Sadie shows on-leash reactivity on the way up to the yard, pulling hard towards other dogs to the point of being bunny hopped up to the yard. Sweet Sadie becomes reactive to the dog in the other pen and will vocalize. As handler guides her away, she jumps up onto them and as they maneuver the lead to stiff arm her, she mouths their underarm. Handler keeps Sweet Sadie on a short lead and she is bunny hopped past other dogs, returning to kennel safely. 04/08/25: Sweet Sadie is lying in the middle of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and walks to the Canine Behavior Office where she is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. Sweet Sadie spends time scenting and exploring the space and will, at times, approach handlers and sniff their treat bags to solicit treats. During the jog portion of assessment, Sweet Sadie will jump up and mouth assessor's sleeve. Handler uses squeaker and assessor stiff arms briefly as Sadie attempts to jump up again. Handler takes Sweet Sadie's leash and walks her away from assessor for a moment before assessment resumes. After assessment, Sweet Sadie will explore the space again. As handler is sitting at the computer, Sweet Sadie will stand next to them for a moment before jumping up and gripping onto them with her front paws, attempting to mount. Handler stands up and Sweet Sadie lets go. She is returned to kennel safely. 4/6/25: Sweet Sadie is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body and is easily leashed to be brought out to the yard for dog-dog greet. Sadie during her time out in the yard is incessantly jumping at handlers pouches for treats, mouthing treat pouches and attempting to mount. Sadie is given a very small amount of treats to help her impulse control/arousal, and offers sit cues and remains engaged with the handler. Sadie is easily leashed and is brought back to the kennel after the greet with no issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Sweet Sadie Potential Challenges, we recommend that she be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home: Due to Sweet Sadie's reactivity towards other dogs in care, and her behavior during dog-dog greets, she should go to a home as a single pet. RECOMMEND NO DOG PARKS: Due to Sweet Sadie's reactivity shown while in care, we recommend that she avoids all dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner: Sweet Sadie came into the care center as a stay, so her history is unknown. In care, she has not adjusted to the care center environment and displayed high levels of arousal and on-leash reactivity in the care center. She consistently pulls hard on leash and exhibits vocalizations and reactivity when in proximity to other dogs. During multiple handling sessions, Sadie has demonstrated inappropriate mounting behavior, repeated jumping, and mouthing of handlers’ clothing and arms, particularly when overstimulated or excited. Although she can be redirected at times and has shown the ability to engage with handlers when provided with structure and treats. Due to her low threshold for arousal, jumpy/mouthy behavior, and challenges with impulse control and leash reactivity, Sweet Sadie is recommended for placement with a New Hope partner who can provide behavior support and continued training in a calm, structured environment.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: During the jog portion of assessment, Sweet Sadie will jump up and mouth assessor's sleeve. Handler uses a squeaker and assessor stiff arms briefly as Sadie attempts to jump up again. Sweet said is also noted to mouth handlers treat pouch and also noted to mount handlers. Training should focus on improving impulse control, teaching appropriate social interactions, and addressing mouthiness through consistent reinforcement of calm behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Barrier frustration/Kennel presence: Sweet Sadie is reported to hard bark and lunge when novel dogs walk past her kennel. During the knock portion of her handling assessment she is noted to bark. Training should involve desensitization to other dogs and reducing barrier frustration by creating positive associations with the presence of other dogs and minimizing stress in the kennel environment. Please see the hadnout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
