King
Hello, my name is King. My animal id is #247759. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 7 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/26/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormKing is at risk due to behavioral concerns. King arrived at the shelter as an owner surrender. His previous owner was no longer able to care for him; however described King as social and affectionate. During his stay in the care center, King was initially observed to be fearful, but has warmed up to handlers and is easily leashed for walks. Recently, King has been observed to show increasing reactivity to both dogs and people. He has been observed to pull extremely hard towards dogs and jump towards people during walks. When in play-yards with staff, King remains social, engages well with fetch/trade-up games, and is treat receptive. Medically, King has made significant progress with his alopecia, he does have undetermined allergies that should be explored further.

Summary:: 3/14/26: King greets another dog at the gate with a loose and wiggly body. He jumps up on the fence, loose and wiggly.
Summary (4):: 4/20/26: King is standing at the front neutral body wagging tail. He is easily leashed using a treat as a lure and once out pulls hard forward, front legs slightly off the ground, looking towards the other dogs. He is brought to the yard where he jumps on the toy bin. When the lid is opened to reveal tennis balls, he pacing back and forth, paws on the bin. Handler tosses him a ball but he drops it then scurries after it. Once in a pen, he lays down and begins to rip the ball up. He pulls hard, darting back and forth. He is aloof with handler, interested only if treats or a ball is offered. He returns to kennel without issue. 4/17/26: King is at the front of his kennel, jumping frantically as the handler approaches; he is given a treat, which he shows slight interest in. He is leashed and brought out the room. The handler brings King to the yard; they pick up toys from the toy in, and King mouths their hand when trying to get the toy in their hand. he handler tosses the toy on the ground and he picks it up. After entering the pen, King lies down and gnaws at the toy until he breaks it; he then sniffs around and relieves himself. He doesn't react to dogs or handlers walking past the pen. The handler tosses treats on the ground, and he eats some of them. Upon entry, while approaching his kennel, King refuses to enter as he fixates on the dog next to him in kennel; the handler muscles King in and removes their leash.
Summary (5):: 4/12/26: (Late Entry) King is at the front of the kennel with a loose body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room. He rises up on his hind legs as he pulls hard and going back and forth to the passing kennels out of the room. King is brought to the backyard and placed on a drag leash. He finds a tennis ball and picks it up. He begins chewing on the tennis ball for a while. Handler grabs some more tennis balls and plays fetch with King. He chases after the ball and returns it, dropping it upon approach. Handler then throws another ball. When King does not drop the ball, handler tells him "drop it". He follows this command. As they play fetch, a dog passes by his pen. He looks towards the dog briefly before walking back towards the handler. After sometime, King is easily re-leashed and he pulls hard out of the yard. He continues pulling back to kennel before he is returned to kennel without issue. 4/12/26: It is reported that King is pulling extremely hard towards other dogs causing himself to pass out. 4/11/26: Reported via whiteboard that King pulls hard and may need harness. 4/10/26: King is reported to impulsively jump towards people on sidewalk during walks, and continues to walk frantically on leash, pulling side to side. 4/4: Volunteer Note - As soon as he came out of his kennel, he jumped up on the handler, and did so several times throughout the interaction. He pulled hard on the way to the street and showed very exuberant, excitable energy. He loved shredding stuffed toys and accepted treats and petting, though petting seemed to increase his arousal. He definitely needs basic training and an experienced handler who can help manage his excitement and arousal.

It is also reported that he is not easily redirected and hard to gain his attention on walks. 3/31/26: King is at the front of his kennel with a loose body, jumping on the kennel door as the handler approaches. He jumps up on his hind legs at the front. He avoids the leash a few times, but is able to leashed. King pulls hard out of the kennel room, he is given a toy and is walked to the street. He carries the toy to the street, pulling hard and relieves himself. After he is takes the toy and carries it further down the street. King stops and rips the toy apart and pulls stuffing out. Handler waits until he is done with the toy. Handler then tosses treats and King chases after them and eats them. Handler picks up the stuffing with a poop bag and ties it. King jumps up and takes the poop bag out of their hand and rips it apart. Handler then walks him back to the shelter. He pulls moderately back and is returned without issue. 3/17/26: Behavior board notes that it is recommended to walk King with a toy (signage added), and at times he resists returning to kennel.

(See dog-dog notes). The handler brings King inside; there are other dogs present, but he doesn’t react. The handler clips their leash and returns King to his kennel with ease. 3/13: Volunteer Note - King was easily leashed and brought out of his kennel. On walks he can pull moderately. He LOVES tennis balls and quickly focused on destroying them one by one. If I paused before tossing the ball, he would start demand-barking and jumping. Summary:: allowed staff to pet with a wiggly tail, needed belly band to enter kennel
Date of initial:: 2/26/2026
Summary:: neutral body, wagging tail, allows all handling for exam, licks treats for tasks
ENERGY LEVEL:: King is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for King
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity, we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: During his assessment, King was observed to become momentarily tense during the toy portion of his assessment. We recommend that King be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of King mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: King's previous owner states that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Since arriving at the care centers staff have reported that King will pancake and baulk outside of the kennel room and will need to be belly banded to return to kennel, his owners also report he is shy and prefers contact on his own terms. It is important to always go slow and give King the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. King would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: King has been observed to pull extremely hard towards other dogs. King is also observed to jump at people while on the street. King will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
