Updated 12/13 Jay is on the Emergency Placement List for medical reasons. She developed a severe upper respiratory infection and stopped eating. Her URI has improved but she is still not eating and needed an esophageal feeding tube to be placed on 12/13. She is likely to do better in a less stressful environment. Behaviorally, she is initially wary but is a very sweet and affectionate kitty.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have spent time with cats. I am a sweet, social, older gal, looking for the perfect forever home! Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! My purr motor is always running! What do you get when you cross a cat with a couch? A cat-potato! And that's me to a T! I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Please check here for updated adoption hours.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/25/22 When I walk past initially and she is out of her den, she turns to look at me and hisses. During our interaction, she is facing the front of the cage with ears forward and pupils dilated. I work on clicker training and reward for her staying at the front and then for leaning forward to sniff my hand. Unsure but curious. 11/27/22 Hiding in cat den upon approach, initially hidden from view. I tap her den gently and begin speaking to her softly, and she responds by vocalizing and poking her head out to watch me - face slightly tense, eyes slightly widened and ears forward. She steps out all the way for treats, then allows petting along her head and body with the scratcher tool while leaning in and raising her tail. She hisses once, but then continues to lean in for petting while beginning to purr. Adorable and chonky -- she's beginning to warm up! Can update evaluation soon if social behaviors remain consistent.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Jay was lying on top of her kuranda bed as the assessor approached, body neutral and ears forward. Jay vocalized when spoken to, eyes wide, then she vocalized again as the kennel door opened. Jay tolerated petting along her head and body while vocalizing, turning her head to watch the assessor’s hand and leaning away from the assessor’s hand. Jay’s meows are long and drawn out and appear to be due to stress. Pick up was not attempted at this time. Jay has settled into her stay at the car center and now appreciates attention and petting, standing near the front of the cage while purring loudly. Upon re-assessment, she is laying at the front of the cage with her ears forward, face and body relaxed, and purring. She leans forward to sniff the hand offered to her before ducking her head down and under the assessor's hand to solicit attention. She accepts and appreciates all petting, leaning into cheek pets specifically. Although she is a bigger girl, she allows pick up without an issue. Jay interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for cat parents with either an average amount of cat experience, demonstrate a basic understanding of typical cat behavior.
