Other Notes:: 4/21/25- Barley is laying down with a neutral body when handler approaches his kennel, they toss a treat in. He slowly gets up and goes to eat it. He is easily leashed, when the door is fully open he slowly walks to the front then stops. Handler tosses a treat outside of the kennel and he comes out. He picks up the treat and exits the room with no reaction to the passing dogs. He is taken for a street walk. When he sees another dog, he has a slight tense body and hackles raised with no vocalization. Handler uses a squeaker but he stays fixated on the dog, handler presents a treat he is redirected and follows handler. He walks on a loose leash and only has a slight pull towards spots to sniff. He gently takes treats throughout the walk. He is taken for his assessment and where he is easily collared. He is social with handlers seeking treats. He starts to whine when he isn't given attention. He is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Barley so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: During his medical exam Barley was observed to have a tense body, panting and avoidant of handlers. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Barley would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Barley has been observed to whine while in the assessment room. If Barley displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: When seeing a dog on the street Barley became tense with raised hackles, he was able to be redirected using a treat. Barley will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
