Stars
Hello, my name is Stars. My animal id is #245067. I am a desexed female white cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 7 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/28/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - allergies.
Stars is currently at-risk due to ongoing behavioral concerns. She was relocated from the adoptions room to a more secluded room after displaying distance-increasing behaviors. When staff approach her kennel, she has been observed to be hissing, swatting, and lunging. During routine cleaning of nearby kennels, Stars becomes visibly agitated and vocalizes while swatting toward staff. Staff have also noted that nearby cats show signs of increased stress due to her behavior. Medically, Stars appears healthy at this time.

Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I am playful and cute!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/28 Stars is laying in the back of her kennel when Luna comes back through the portal door. She hisses at Luna as she comes through and brushes up against her, and wraps her front arm over the back of Luna's head and neck, pushing herself on top of Luna. After a few seconds Luna gets out from under her and comes to the front of the kennel. Stars then backs up a step, lays down and turns her head completely away from Luna. Luna is removed from the kennel. 2/5/26 Stars is in her cubby and exits, stretching out her body, as she watches the handler. The cubby door is opened and she backs up to approach. Stars begins to let out several meows. A finger is extended out to her and she sniffs it before nudging her head against their hand. The handler begins to give her pets on the head and Stars backs up, hissing at them. She turns around and moves to the back of the cubby before reapproaching. They extend a finger out to her and she hisses. The cubby door is closed and Stars exits, hissing again. 2.07 Star was moved into cat wellness due to being highly stressed out after another cat was put in the kennel next to her. She stressed meowed non stop, pacing her kennel and swatting if she was touched. Stars kennel was covered with a towel but that didnt help her with the stress at all. she just went into her cubby and yelled. After moving her to cat ISO she meowed non stop for a while then eventually laid down. When staff went to clean in iso she immediately began stressing meowing/yelling again. She allowed staff to move around her and pet her head for a second. 2/9 Stars is in her den upon approach. He name is spoken and she darts out of it with a high tail and soft eyes. The door is opened and she head bumps staff's hand. Stars arches her back, tail remaining high and begins to roll over into petting. When the door is closed, Stars hisses and begins to claw at her scratcher. 2/15 Stars comes to kennel front to greet staff, meowing loudly. She rubs her head along the bars of the kennel door, soliciting attention. She allows staff to pet her head briefly, then backs away and hisses. Later, when staff is working on the kennel underneath hers, she reaches her paws out of her kennel, grazing staff's head at times. Stars continues to meow and follow staff's movements as they work in the room. 2/27 Stars meows, following staff's movements, rubbing her head along the bars of the kennel door. She allows staff to pet her head briefly, then backs away, batting at staff's hand. She continues to walk back and forth through the portal, meowing. Treats are offered, which she eats quickly. 3/4 (Continued in GAN)
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate,Lively
VOCAL:: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Sweet,Demanding,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Fearful,Uncomfortable with pick up,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Inappropriate Elimination: Stars previous owner reports that she was eliminating (urinating and/or defecating) outside the litter box on chairs, reusable bags, blankets, and the tub, but we are unaware of what, if any, modification steps were taken to try and address this behavior. Please note as well that Stars' previous living situation may have contributed to the behavior seen. We cannot be sure whether this behavior will continue in a different home environment, but we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. We also recommend that Stars be provided with numerous litter boxes throughout the house as she adjusts to her new living space. The extra boxes can be removed as she learns the space and successfully defecates in her main litter box(es). Uncomfortable with Pickup: Stars did not appear to like being picked up during their behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking her up, especially while she is still adjusting to her new home. Other: Stars has been moved to an isolated room due to swatting and hissing at other cats and staff. While reduced exposure to other cats and foot traffic has helped minimize triggers, she continues to hiss and swat at staff when neighboring kennels are being cleaned. Stars appears to be selective with interactions and handling, suggesting she may be uncomfortable with certain types of contact or activity around her. She may require slow introductions, minimal environmental stress, and handling by experienced adopter to help her feel secure and prevent reactive behaviors.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Single-pet home,Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 3/2026: Stars is at the front of the kennel meowing and standing up onto the bars. The kennel door is opened and Stars pushes her way through the door. The handler gently puts their hand on her chest and she rubs her head against their arm. She is given pets along her body and on her head. Stars pushes herself against staff as she receives pets. She is picked up and placed back down. Stars then approaches the handler, placing her front paws on their chest. She is guided down and tolerates the handling. A HVT is given to her before the interaction is ended. 2/2026: Stars is laying against the back of her cubby. Her ears are perked up and her eyes are open slightly. A finger is extended out to her and she sniffs it. The handler slowly pets her cheek and chin. She tolerates the pets. They pet along her back and she begins to purr. The handler picks her up and she remains still. When placing her back down, she turns toward the handler with flat ears and lets out a hiss. She lays back down against the back of the cubby and wraps her tail around herself. The handler offers slow blinks before giving her a gentle pet on her back. She allows pets. A HVT is left behind for her. Stars tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home, with an adopter experienced in her selective behavior.
