Faye Valentine
Hello, my name is Faye Valentine. My animal id is #236586. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/12/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormFaye Valentine is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Throughout her stay in the care center Faye has been observed to be highly fearful and allows limited handling. When select handlers attempt to leash her Faye is quick to escalate to lunging and snapping towards their hands. While on leash Faye is observed to baulk and pull hard back to the building. However with a few handlers Faye has begun to warm up. Medically Faye has CIRDC.

Throughout her stay in the care center Faye has been observed to be highly fearful and allows limited handling. However with a few handlers Faye has begun to warm up. Medically Faye has CIRDC. Meet Faye Valentine! Faye Valentine is an approximately 3-year-old medium mixed-breed (about 40 lbs) who arrived at ACC as a police-found stray (41st Precinct). She was loose and wiggly at intake, but in the shelter setting she's shown heightened fear and handling sensitivity. With a few familiar handlers, she's beginning to warm up and can take treats gently and solicit some petting on her terms. My Ideal Home Placement through an ACC New Hope partner with an experienced, adult-only home. Faye needs a calm environment, decompression time, and force-free, reward-based training to build confidence. A predictable routine and thoughtful management will help her feel safe and successful. Good with Kids? Recommended adult-only (no children under 13). Faye has shown fear-based behaviors and once snapped at a handler's hand during leashing (ripped glove; no skin broken). Good with Other Pets? Dog social history is limited. In a yard meet, she was loose/wiggly but corrected another dog for prolonged sniffing. Given her leash reactivity and stress around novel dogs, a single-pet home is recommended initially; no dog parks. Leash Manners Leashing and street walks can be hard for Faye. She may baulk, pull back to the building, or escalate to snapping at hands if pressured. She benefits from slow, choice-based leashing, high-value food trails, distance from triggers, and gradual counter-conditioning. Overall Health About 40 lbs and up to date on core vaccines and microchip. Heartworm test: negative. Treated for CIRDC with doxycycline; Eating well; otherwise doing well per recent rechecks.

Summary:: 9/17/25: Faye Valentine greets another dog at the gate with a tense body. Off leash, she is loose and wiggly, demand barks and will correct another dog for prolonged sniffing of her backside.
Summary (6):: 09/28/25: Faye Valentine approaches the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is offered treats and displays a loose body, she accepts them gently and is leashed while distracted with more treats. She is brought to the driveway for her walk and accepts treats from handler while outside, Faye sits for treats when asked and walks alongside handler pulling moderately toward spots of interest. Faye shows no interest in people or dogs she sees in the driveway, after a while handler attempts to coax Faye out to the street for a bit, she follows some tossed treats and sniffs around briefly but quickly walks back into the driveway. Handler stays in the driveway with Faye for a bit more and she relieves herself before being brought back to kennel. She allows handler to clip her leash and returns without issue. 9/22/25: Staff came to K9 behavior about Faye Valentine, staff were attempting to leash her and she snapped towards the handler's hand, making contact and ripping their glove. There was no broken skin. K9 behavior approached the kennel and Faye had a soft body. When the leash was presented she backs up and is tense. Handler tosses treats and she eats them. Faye is able to be leashed with a treat lure. She is removed from kennel and brought towards the street with a treat trail. When brought closer she quickly turns around and pulls away. Faye Valentine is walked to the backyard where she relieves herself. Faye does zoomies around the yard and is placed on a drag leash. She continues to run around the yard. After, Faye is re-leashed with a treat lure and returned to kennel without issue. 9/22/25: ACS report that on 9/18 Faye Valentine would lunge and snap at handlers hands when they were attempting to leash her.
Summary (7):: 9/21/25: Faye Valentine is as the front of her kennel with a neutral body. Treats were fed to her through the bars, which she took and she is then easily leashed. She is removed from the kennel and would slightly pull ahead of the handler. She is then attempted to be taken out for a street walk, as she walks towards the gate she would cower and begin to walk back from the gate. Treats are tossed ahead and she wasn't receptive to them. She is then kept in the driveway and would walk around, she would take treats from handlers hand with a soft mouth but would then begin to cower and avoid interaction with the handler. Shortly after, she is then easily pre-clipped and taken back to kennel with ease. 9/17/25: Faye Valentine was curled up at the back of her pop up crate. She was easily leashed and pulled out of the crate to the behavior office. Refusing to walk away. Handler carefully lifts her up and carries her to the backyard. She is placed on the ground and walks to the yard for a dog-dog interaction (see dog-dog notes). Faye is then brought into the pen and placed on a drag leash where she walks around the pen jumping up on handlers in a social manner. She takes treats gently and walks around the pen sniffing around and relieving herself before going back towards the handler. She allows petting. After she is slowly walked back to the shelter with verbal coaxing and returned to kennel without issue. 9/16/25: Faye Valentine has been observed to be fearful during a street walk. As vehicles were driving past, creating loud noises, Faye pulled very hard to return to the shelter. 9/15/25- Faye is at the middle of her pop up crate with a neutral body, when handler attempts to leash Faye dodges the leash and retreats a little. Handler tossed in treats but Faye was still dodging. After a few attempts handler was finally able to lasso the leash onto her. She pulls hard when exiting the building for her street walk, she passed people in the drive way. She pulled towards them seeking to greet them with a soft body. She crosses the street and relieves herself. After she baulks, handler tosses treats but she shows no interest. They use a squeaker while talking excitedly and Faye starts to follow handler with a light bouncing walking. She again baulks and turns pulling hard to return to the building. Handler again uses their squeaker but Faye just keeps baulking/ pulling back to the building with a slight tense body. Handler brings her for her assessment where she is easily collared and is social with handlers. When returning her to her pop up crate, she plants and doesn't want to enter. Handler tosses in treats and applies pressure to the leash. She goes in after a moment.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Faye Valentine so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: After warming up to handlers Faye is observed to jump up with a soft body. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Faye has been observed to baulk on leash and is not receptive to treats or squeakie sounds. While in a crate Faye was observed to lunge and snap at handlers hands when they were attempting to leash her. It is important to move slowly with Faye, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
