Brooklyn
Hello, my name is Brooklyn . My animal id is #239003. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/11/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormBrooklyn is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace.

Behavior Condition: 5. Red
KNOWN HISTORY:: Brooklyn was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/15/25 FB32 Lying down in loaf position on top of the den with a tense body. Eyes widen when reaching close to take a photo. He hisses, lip licks, and tilts his ears to the side. I stay still until his eyes and body begin to relax. Kept interaction short to reduce stress. 10/16/25 While resting on top of the den, he growls but remains alert and shows curiosity by sniffing the scratcher tool. Attempting to make contact he continued to growl so the interaction stopped to help reduce his stress. 10/19/25 FB32 Resting face down hiding in den. When pet on the head, he wakes up and begins whining or growling. When reaching close to offer puree treat on the scratcher tool, he initially attempts to swat the tool but misses and pokes his nose into the puree treat. He begins eagerly eating the puree treat. When attempting to reach around and give him cheek rubs, he growls, leans back, and raises his paw up about to swat. He remains cautious but curious for more puree treat offered as he still whine/growls with his paw up. After sniffing the puree, he continues eating more. He briefly whine/growls again at the end when pulling the tool away, then calms down. 10/20/25 FB73 Brooklyn is sitting on top of his den, growling loudly, crouched low with very dilated pupils. As a squeeze up is offered to him on the scratcher tool, the volume of his growling intensifies. He stops to sniff at the squeeze up, hesitating briefly before beginning to eat it, growling loudly whenever the tool is pulled back but continuing to accept the squeeze up.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Calm,Sweet
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Brooklyn was initially alert but calm, allowing brief head petting with a scratcher tool. However, he gradually became uncomfortable, retreating and escalating to growling and hissing. He remained wary and continued vocalizing distress, ignoring treats. The assessment was ended early to reduce his stress. Brooklyn is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
