Sunset Orange

Hello, my name is Sunset Orange. My animal id is #233981. I am a desexed female unknown (update later) cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 13 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/19/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Sunset Orange is on the at risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Sunset Orange has dental disease.

A volunteer writes: Sunset Orange is a senior who has always and admirably lived her life on her own brilliant terms, which makes what has happened to her that much more of a shock. She and a kitty friend had a home in a building basement. They were well taken care of by their neighbors and beloved for their place in the community. When the building they called home was sold, Sunset Orange and her buddy found themselves on their own. Their loving neighbors stepped in and brought them to us to help them get started on their next steps. Though we welcomed them with open arms and a plan, Sunset Orange wants absolutely nothing to do with something she doesn't have a say in. She hasn't felt much like coming out to say hi and spends her days snuggled up in her den just waiting for the day to happen. As I'm sure you might imagine, shelter life has presented a bit of a bumpy road, but we know everything will be so much smoother when she finds a family to call her very own.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Sunset Orange was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. The client stated that she, her mom, and the other neighbors have been taking care of Sunset Orange and other cats for the last couple of years who had access indoor and outdoor. Sunset Orange has been living inside the building basement recently. Upon intake, Sunset Orange had dilated pupils and flee while transferring into an den.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/29/25 FB73 As the den cover is removed, Sunset Orange immediately flees out of her den and goes to the other side of her kennel, pupils dilated, lip licking, with airplane ears. Crunchy treat is offered, which she sniffs but tenses and does not take. Squeeze up is offered on the scratcher tool, which she sniffs before avoiding it by wedging herself into the back corner of the kennel, low growling at it, and then fleeing to the other side of the kennel and flattening herself into her litter box. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. 10/03/25 FB32 Hiding in den lying down. Hisses when removing den cover. Softly stress meows when reaching close. Sniffs treats offered. Allows petting on head but tilts ears to the side and lowers head. Slowly warms up to the attention and stretches out her neck for cheek and chin rubs. When stroking her body, she quickly looks back and softly stress meows again. Much improvement, but still fearful. 10/6/25 FB47 Sunset Orange was in the den looking out with large pupils, appearing curious. When the kennel door was opened, she came out and appeared as if she wanted to flee, but then she turned around and showed interest in the treat bag, sniffing it. She then started to hiss when approached with the scratcher tool. When petting was attempted, she swatted it fairly hard. 10/9/25 FB32 Hiding in den upon approach, stress meows, but then walks out of the den and sits up at the back with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. Focuses on me when offering treats but remains tense. When reaching close to pet with the scratcher tool, she bats the tool and retreats into the den. 10/14/25 Quickly jets out from the den avoiding contact. She hissed and lifted paw when attempting to pet with the scratcher tool. Ended to help reduce stress. 10/16/25 Soft meows when spoken softly to but retreats when attempting to make contact. She then swatted with mild pressure at the scratcher tool watching from afar. Ended and when left alone she ate the offered party mix treats.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression,Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Intimidated and fearful of hands reaching close. She may hiss, swat hard, and retreat. Sensitive to petting on the back or body. She may escalate to biting. Sunset Orange is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is very apprehensive of people and she may attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to fearfulness and potential to escalate to swatting or biting.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 09/22/25: Sunset Orange was inside the den upon approach. After lifting the den cover, she appeared anxious, looked around, and hissed and struck at the assess-a-hand when contact was attempted. She then darted into the adjacent kennel, avoiding contact, and hissing throughout. The assessment was ended to help reduce stress. 10/19/25: Sunset Orange's behavior has slightly improved from the initial evaluation now that she remains calm when reaching close and she tolerates petting on the head (instead of swatting and retreating); however, she is still sensitive to touch on her body and may escalate to biting. During the re-evaluation, she was lying down on top of den curled up with her front paws tucked under and tail wrapped around body. She softly stress meows when reaching close to offer puree treat on scratcher tool. She sniffs and lip licks, and then tolerates petting on head and cheeks; however when stroking her body, she quickly turns her head back to bite the tool. Then, she hisses and flattens her ears. She calms down fairly quickly, repositions herself curled up, and continues to tolerate more petting on the head. Sunset Orange is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and she may escalate to swatting or biting when attempting to pet or handle her. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
