Mia is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. Mia tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children.

Your newly adopted pet has been diagnosed with being OBESE and the staff veterinarians are issuing a TEMPORARY waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment through to the resolution of the issue. At the time of a full recovery you may choose to have your veterinarian perform the spay/neuter surgery, or make provisions to return the pet to ACC for sterilization.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/8/26 Vol. Mia was lying on the edge of her large bed. I put Squeeze Up and Temptations near her but she did not accept them. I petted her head and back with my hand. She accepted all touching, looking around and avoiding eye contact with me. The notes on her kennel say to monitor her appetite, so I put her wet food near her to see if I could coax her to eat, but she was not interested. She needs more time to adjust. 3/13/26 FB61 Hunched in cat bed, body tense, face round and pupils dilated. She hisses and flattens her ears as the kennel door opens and she is tolerant of petting on her cheeks while flattening her ears furhter. She perks up and sniffs the air immediately when offered treats. I do not push further petting at this time and when I check on her later she’s standing up in the front of her kennel eating her treats. Will continue to build positive associations. 3/14/26 FB79 Inside of the kennel, Mia is laying with her tail out of sight her ears forward and her eyes wide. She hissed as soon as i bend down to be at eye level with her and spoke; when the tool was brought close to her but she did however, remain still and tolerated petting on her head and cheeks. After a few more pets her ears started to tilt back and forth but had no further reaction when i pet down and around her bock and body. 3/16/26 FB61 Crouched on cat bed, body and face tense with her feet and tail tucked. She makes eye contact with tilted ears when spoken to and she leans away as the kennel door opens. She tolerates petting along her head and back while tilting her ears and leaning away further. I speak to her softly and end the session. When I check on her later I see that the treats have been eaten! 3/19/26 FB61 Hunched in back of kennel, body and face tense with her ears tilted. She tolerates petting along her head and back while slow-blinking hard, focusing on me and shifting her weight as she backs away slightly. She is not comfortable with hands-on interaction at this time. She eats the treats offered after I've closed the kennel door. She is afraid of the bubble show (watches with ears flattening further and head lowering).
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Rough play,Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Mia's behavior appears suitable for an adopter with an average amount of experience, provided the adopter is aware of typical kitten behavior and is able to comfortably manage rough play.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 yrs old due to preferring contact on her own terms, needing extra time to warm up and reported rough play from previous owner.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Laying in the cubby, Mia has a very low body while curled up in her litterbox and her tail out of sight. When she looks up her eyes are wide with forward ears but she lowers her head once again when spoken to. Mia remains very still/frozen when pet with the tool all over her head and cheeks as well as down and around her body - and when the assessor attempted to pull the litterbox forward she tensed up, brought her shoulders inward and backed up into the cubby. Mia tolerated all petting including when the assessor applied light pressure on her belly/abdomen with the tool; but she was not able to be coaxed out with treats or pets. Pick up was not conducted at this time. Mia tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children.
