Summary:: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Moderate Reactivity to humans: None Reactivity to dogs: Inconclusive Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Distracted Call over: Approaches handler with coaxing Sociability comments: Vocalizing and pacing Soft handling: Fearful Exuberant handling: Fearful Comments: Become tense, head whips, and spins towards the handler during exuberant contact Arousal Jog comments: Follows handler with tense body Knock Knock comments: Begins hard barking at the primary handler when the secondary handler leaves Toy Toy comments: Grips light and relinquishes

Summary:: 3/17/26: Willow Luna greets another dog at the gate with neutral body. She then disengages on her own and only approaches again with coaxing.

Summary (5):: Willow Luna is at the front of her kennel barking at the handler. She is easily leashed and brought out the room. The handler brings Willow to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog notes). In between interactions, Willow is aloof, running and sniffing around the pen. Afterwards, the handler clips their leash and brings Willow Luna into a new kennel.

Summary (6):: 03/13: Volunteer Note - Willow Lane is seen walking nicely beside staff out to the backyard. She remained calm and content, quietly accepting gentle pets on her head, body, and butt. She was a bit aloof but responded when called, sat when asked, and took treats very gently. This smart lady knows sit, paw, and other paw! At one point she hopped onto the bench and sat next to staff. When she looked toward him, he stepped away to give her a bit of space. Overall, She was calm and polite throughout the interaction, with not much excitement.

Summary (7):: 3/17/26: It is reported that Willow Luna is banging on the transfer door of her kennel. She is moved to a kennel without a transfer door but is then observed to be barking at the front and pacing the kennel. 3/11/26: Willow Luna is standing up at the front of her kennel. She hard stares at the handler and barks repeatedly. She does not take treats. The door is unlocked and her expression softens and she begins to wag her tail. She is easily leashed, although she tries to push out of kennel. She pulls moderate-hard and sniffs around. She check in with the handler. She is brought back to the assessment room (see notes) then to kennel, where she balks and pulls away. A second handler tries to get her in with no success. In the end, a sling was used to return her to kennel. 3/10/26: It is reported that Willow Luna needed a sling to return to kennel. 3/9/26: It was noted on the whiteboard that Willow Luna is refusing to enter the kennel. 3/8/26: Willow Luna is lying down in kennel. When the handler approaches, she gets up and comes to the front. She is easily leashed and brought to the yard. She relieves herself and sniffs around. She does not react to the other dogs or people in the yard, despite being in the small back pen next to another dog. She is returned to her kennel room where she balks at the door. She does not move with coaxing or treats. Leash pressure is applied and she gets in kennel with light muscling in. 03/08/26: Willow Luna is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel, she walks with handler outside to the street. Once outside Willow walks alongside handler, stopping to sniff and relieving herself throughout the walk. Willow shows no signs of reactivity passing people and sees some dogs from afar with no reaction. After a while she is brought back inside and baulks slightly in front of kennel but enters following treats and with a bit of leash pressure.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to reactivity we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to hard barking, lunging, and growling towards cats we recommend a home with no cats. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking, lunging, and growling towards familiar and unfamiliar dogs we recommend a single pet home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Handling Sensitivity: Willow's previous owner states that she will bark, growl, and lunge when held/restrained. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Willow to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Anxiety: Willow's previous owner states that she is generally anxious. During her assessment Willow was observed to pant and pace around the room while vocalizing. If Willow displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Willow's previous owner states that she will growl, bark, lunge, snap and attempt to bite strangers, cats, small animals and dogs while on leash. Willow will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Willow's previous owner states that she pulls hard on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
