Animal Profile

Cloudy Mushroom

Hello, my name is Cloudy Mushroom . My animal id is #212976. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 10/23/2024.

Cloudy Mushroom is at risk due to behavioral concerns. He arrived at the care center as a stray, and during intake, he growled and snapped at staff when handled. While in the care center, Cloudy has been social with staff, allowing petting, but he has also displayed challenging behaviors. He takes treats with excessive pressure, resource guards, and has a poor kennel presence. Recently, Cloudy has been observed scratching and scraping his teeth on the kennel walls. Additionally, there was an incident where he pushed out of his kennel and, when restrained by his collar, jumped up and bit and released a staff member’s elbow. No skin was broken. Despite daily enrichment efforts, Cloudy is not adapting well to the shelter environment. Medically, Cloudy is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Cloudy Mushroom's overall behavior, Cloudy Mushroom should go to a home with older children.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Handling/touch sensitivity: On intake, staff attempted to collar Cloudy Mushroom, and he growled at them. During medical exam, he was muzzled, and he growled and snapped at staff. Cloudy Mushroom seems fearful and sensitive with some handling. Positive reinforcement should be utilized to help him associate certain handling with things he likes such as treats and toys. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity and Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Cloudy Mushroom takes treats with hard pressure. Positive reinforcement should be used to help teach Cloudy Mushroom impulse control. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Resource guarding: Cloudy mushroom was observed by staff to resource guard an enrichment item. Cloudy got tense, hovered over the enrichment and his lips were quivering. Please see handout on resource guarding. Kennel Presence: Cloudy mushroom was observed by staff to be repeatedly jumping on his kennel door and barking persistently. Please see handout on kennel presence.
