Hanz is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior such as lunging, hissing, and swatting when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Meet Hanz, the most endearing white cat you'll ever encounter. With his pristine fur, a dainty pink nose, and a charming black patch on his head that resembles a tiny hat, Hanz is as unique as he is adorable. This sweet feline may come across as timid, but that's only because he's a bit of a scaredy-cat. The hustle and bustle of shelter life has made Hanz a bit apprehensive, and his response to stress is to retreat to the safety of his den. It's his quiet, shy demeanor that makes him all the more special. Though he might be cautious, Hanz is a gentle and tolerant soul when it comes to human touch. He'll let you stroke his soft fur and provide him with the comfort and reassurance he needs. Underneath that initial shyness lies a heart full of potential for love and companionship. Hanz is patiently waiting for that one person or family who can provide him with a secure and loving forever home. With a bit of patience and understanding, he will surely bloom into the affectionate and devoted companion you've always dreamed of. If you're looking for a sweet and charming feline friend to share your life with, Hanz is the cat for you. All he needs is a little love and a safe space to call his own, and in return, he'll give you a lifetime of gratitude and warmth. Come meet Hanz today and let him show you just how wonderful a bond with a timid yet tender-hearted cat can be.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
KNOWN HISTORY:: Hanz was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/31/23 In den completely hidden from view, I offer squeeze up on the scratcher tool and leave it for him to eat once I have walked away. When I check later, the squeeze up has not been touched. Needs more time. 9/7/23 In den completely hidden from view. I speak softly for a moment and place some dry treats down to try and coax him out of his den but am unable to. I place some squeeze up on the scratcher tool and place it at the opening of the den before walking away to give him space to eat if he wants to. When I check back later, he has not touched the treat. When the den cover is lifted, he hisses once with eyes wide and dilated and face and body tense. 9/11/23 Lying in cat den as the assessor approached, body and face hidden from view. He does not come out when offered treats or a catnip soaked toy. The room is pretty crowded at the time... I speak to him softly before ending the session. 9/15/23 Sat in his den throughout with his head sticking out a little. Pupils dilated. When I extended the scratcher with treats on it, he lunged to bite it. Did not respond to further treats on scratcher, but sat up in his den and kept staring. After speaking to him softly for a bit, I dropped the treats in his den and ended the interaction. 9/20/23 Hanz loves his den. He is hidden upon approach and he does not come out when offered treats or a catnip toy. He is quite nervous here... would benefit from placement at this time. I leave him a scented toy to investigate later when he feels more safe. 10/02/23 Hunched in den upon approach, body and face tense and tail wrapped tightly around feet. He does not respond when spoken to or when offered treats. I speak to him softly and slow-blink before ending the session. He is consistently remaining in his den during interactions at this time. 10/04/23 In cat den upon approach, only the side of his body visible through the den door. He is unresponsive when offered treats or a catnip toy. When touched with the scratcher tool he flinches and retreats further into his den. Showing pretty consistent behavior at this time. 10/9/23 Hanz has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. He is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior. 10/20/23 When removing the den blocker, he lunged forward and stepped back, pushing himself against the back wall of the den with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. When reaching close with the scratcher tool, he swats hard with force and hisses to be left alone. Kept interaction short to reduce stress.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period,Pet-induced aggression,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Immediately bites or swats when reaching close and when making contact with the scratcher tool. He has also been observed to lunge and hiss during interactions.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Hanz is a shy, timid, and independent cat whose behavior has declined since his previous assessment. He continues to display fearful body language such as wide, dilated eyes, tense body, and remains hidden in his den; and now, Hanz escalates to biting and swatting. Hanz looks through the den side portal and focuses on the assessor. When reaching close with treats on the scratcher tool, he leans his head forward and bites on the tool. After releasing, he leans further back into the den. When pet on his body, Hanz swats hard and bats at the tool a few times and then again when the assessor slowly pulls the tool away. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Hanz is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, scratch, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
